24.01.2022 We have discovered this handy free online program to help children and teens to overcome anxiety. We have been using it as a way to help kids practice their skills at home. https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/ The BRAVE Program is an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. The programs are free, and provide ways for children and teenagers to better cope with their worries. There are also programs for parents.

20.01.2022 Loving this podcast from Science Vs. Psychologists often recommend that people try meditation techniques to help manage depression and anxiety. Want to know the science behind meditation? Does it really work? This podcast lays out the evidence, and all with a cheeky flair. https://gimletmedia.com/science-vs/

20.01.2022 "Anxiety isn't weakness. It requires continual strength. To equate anxiety with weakness is to equate the illness with the patient. Walking to a shop can be a show of strength if you are on fire." Matt Haig

20.01.2022 Love this twitter quote from Linda Holmes @nprmonkeysee. "For #worldmentalhealthday: Help can really help and its ok if youre not sure what you need or whats wrong. You maybe cant point to what hurts. Just start at "I want to feel better" or "Someone I love asked me to do this and I trust them. Ive had both therapy and meds, and my life has gotten SO MUCH better and easier and happier. Im more myself, not less. And you deserve that. You deserve to clear whatever obstacles you can to feel better and more like yourself. You can do it.

20.01.2022 A fascinating study comparing preschool children in Cameroon and Germany. Yay for psychological research. It just goes to show that there is not one right way to parent, but a multiplicity of right ways. https://digest.bps.org.uk//rural-cameroonian-pre-schooler/

19.01.2022 Ever wondered what it would be like to see a psychologist for therapy? Do you have to lie on a couch? Is it just like the movies? Heres some handy information about what seeing a psychologist is *really* like, as well as ways to get the most out of your session. http://www.northwestpsych.com.au/adults/making-the-most/

19.01.2022 Dianne is one of our mindfulness experts. She recommends the Insight Timer app and website. So many options to choose from - they really have something for everyone, from beginners to more experienced meditators. Give it a go! https://insighttimer.com/meditation-app

16.01.2022 The sankofa bird is an Aftrican symbol from the Akan tribe in Ghana. The bird moves forward whilst looking backwards, with the seed of the future in its beak. It symbolizes the way in which remembering and learning from the past helps us plan for the future and make better choices. I think this is profoundly true for us as individuals, and also for the wider community/country. https://www.berea.edu/cgwc/the-power-of-sankofa/

16.01.2022 Tantrums, meltdowns, flipping out. We all have times when we lose the plot. This hand model of the brain helps us understand why it happens and how to handle it - We love using this concept to help kids understand how to do things differently.

15.01.2022 OK, so its the beginning of the week, theres heaps to do and youre freaking out. Why not try some finger breathing to centre yourself? This is a great mindfulness technique to try - kids love it too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh79w9pn9Cg

14.01.2022 We are absolutely loving this podcast about emotions from Invisibilia. It is true - they do offer a truly mind-blowing alternative explanation for how emotion gets made. It is not the way we usually think about emotions - and the explanation is a beautiful way of understanding how psychological therapy such as CBT can actually help change your life. Wow. Anyone who is interested in understanding what makes humans tick should take a listen! http://www.npr.org/programs/invisibilia/530718193/emotions

14.01.2022 'Unspeakable' is a podcast from Victoria Police about sexual crime. If you are someone who has experienced sexual crime it may be difficult to listen to..... but it may also help you to feel less alone. In particular, episode three looks at the reactions people can have after experiencing sexual crime, and dispels myths about what this is like. A difficult listen, but strongly recommended. https://itunes.apple.com//podcast/unspeakable/id1278241460

12.01.2022 What happens when you give people free, open-ended psychological therapy for issues such as depression and anxiety? I have heard Dr David Clarke speak about the program and it is inspiring to hear what they are doing in England. https://www.nytimes.com//england-mental-health-treatment-t

12.01.2022 Were excited to announce that we have a new psychologist, Farzana Rita, joining our team. She is experienced in working with kids and says: I enjoy working with children because I like the energy that they bring with them and their ability to learn and grow." Welcome to our team, Farzana! http://www.northwestpsych.com.au/abo/our-team/farzana-rita/

10.01.2022 You dont need to be directly involved in a tragedy to feel its effects. Digital media means we witness terrorist attacks, wars, accidents and natural disasters... as they happen through our phones and TVs. And while the news helps us to stay informed about whats going on, it can be overwhelming and distressing especially for kids. Its pretty much impossible to shield children completely from upsetting news. And keeping things secret can add to their sense of anxiety and sadness when they do come across snippets of info. Your best option is to take an interest in what kids are seeing and reading, and support them to understand whats happening. Its also important to take care of yourself and allow yourself to feel; its a normal reaction. For more tips on talking about scary stuff in the news, visit: bb.org.au/2ryEGaO

10.01.2022 How do you get kids to open up and talk about stuff? Have you noticed that some of your best discussions happen when you are in the car together? We find that it is good to be doing something while you talk, like craft, games or playing catch. A game like Jenga is great because it gives everyone a focus... but theres plenty of space to chat as you play. When do you have your best talks?

10.01.2022 Talking honestly about the struggles we face is empowering. Hats off to Osher Gunsberg.

09.01.2022 They say its the most relaxing musical piece in the world, and heres the research to prove it: https://curiosity.com//neuroscientists-found-the-most-rel/ If youre seeking eight minutes of mindfulness and stress release, close your eyes and listen - we have been recommending it as a relaxation exercise for our clients.

03.01.2022 We are back to school today after the long weekend. It was lovely to have a break, but sometimes it can make it even harder to go back to school. Did you have any tears and tummy aches at your place today? Heres some information about study stress - what is it, and what to do about it. This is something that can be managed, so that kids can actually enjoy their studies. http://www.northwestpsych.com.au/young-people/study-stress/

02.01.2022 "So, what are you going to do about it?" It is a few years old now, but we love this accurately menacing portrayal of anxiety. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyTsR4eR7kw... Find out more about how to get help here: http://www.northwestpsych.com.au/anxiety/what-is-anxiety/

02.01.2022 We have found this great free app which helps keep people safe if they are experiencing very low mood and thoughts of death or self-harm. It doesnt replace the need for seeking help and support, but it is a good way of reminding yourself of your safety plan. And it is always there on your phone when you need it. https://itunes.apple.com//beyondnow-suicide-/id1059270058

01.01.2022 If you have ever experienced thoughts of suicide or self-harm, it can be really scary. It can also be hard to know what to do if someone you care about tells you that theyre feeling so bad that they have thought about harming themselves. Heres some helpful information about the steps you can take to keep yourself safe when you are feeling very low. http://www.northwestpsych.com.au/depression/emergency-help/
