25.01.2022 New data... Norton Commando riding does not get 'the heart racing'. 'Not riding' Norton Commando is much more stressful to the heart.... Chill out! Ride Norton Commando! ;>}

25.01.2022 Washed the 850 then rode home the long way. Engine idled to stall to drain carburettors. Ignition off. Five minute static engine heat soak (while I struggle to remove my leather jacket with the winter liner still fitted). Out of curiousity... temperature readings... 130C _ fin at exhaust port 100C _ flange at inlet port 85C _ runner at midpoint 60C _ fuel bowl 45C _ gearbox top mount 40C _ battery tray .

24.01.2022 A taste of spring to come with a couple of hours of loop riding... no particular place to go. Yep, that's a rhino statue on the side of the highway!

23.01.2022 Routine maintenance... fork oil change. Revised oil volume (based on advice from an experienced racer/tuner) to alter the progressive pneumatic compression of air trapped in the stanchions. Rebound damping remains unchanged.... Update info... 13-February-2021 Now: 200 ml of oil. Spring removed. Damper unit 'primed'. Damper rod fully 'sunk'. Front suspension fully compressed. Measured: Air space length (top of yoke to oil level in stanchion) = 140 mm. Calculated air space lengths for other oil volumes: Spec. of 5.5 us fl. oz ('73 Chilton manual) = 163 ml of oil = 211 mm. 150 ml of oil (in use for 2+ years) = 236 mm. (Note: Calculations based on stanchion ID & damper rod OD. Assumption: damper unit is always fully submerged in each scenario).

22.01.2022 Norton Commando 1974 [Mk2a] trial. Photo 1: Three years use 2016-2019 ... slider/stanchion seals are shot: leaking & dirty.... With oil leaking, the progressive pneumatic compression is also lost i.e. internal air sealing & retention is gone. Photo 2: Two years trial use 2019-2021 ... zero stanchion damage so slider/stanchion seals are still intact (plus the seal lips are always clean and lubricated from above & below). Seals intact = air is contained within so compession is remains progressive pneumatic. 5 ml of oil is contained in each stanchion protector so the seal/stanchion interface surfaces are always lubricated (& always clean). Handy hint: slider seal retainer has slots to match the IKON (rear units) C-spanner so no extra equipment required for the travel kit.

22.01.2022 What a rider might see... worse if the visor is wiped while riding a 500km loop

21.01.2022 Just cinched the rear suspension units through their range. The drive chain at the tightest (& least slack position) had 10-12 mm of slack... at full extension on the centre stand, the slack is 28 mm. I last adjusted this chain some time in 2019... also haven't lubricated the outside of this chain since last year but haven't done as much distance riding either.

21.01.2022 That's no good... 18 months.

18.01.2022 PCV for all revs: current iteration - now utilising the sump breather, can also function to clear any 'wet sump' at start-up...

17.01.2022 Footpegs: progressively expendable instead of original 'snap-off on impact' design. 1. Grind knob shreds sacrificial surface. 2. Grind knob pulls sacrificial small thread from aluminium footpeg shaft.... 3. Aluminium footpeg shaft bends or is torn from hardened steel stud fixed to the mount. Options: A. Grind knobs are available in a range of colours to closer match paintwork. B. Full length footpegs (i.e. without grind knobs) can be fitted (assembly shown). Diameter including sheath is near 6mm less than original 'rubber on small steel shaft' design. Vibration damping achieved by Norton Commando 'Isolastic' rubber separation of rider from drivetrain & components.

15.01.2022 Fuel cap seal leaking fuel onto the 'nice' paintwork... potential for fuel dripping onto a hot engine. Plastic/rubber type now replaced with viton seal cut from sheet.

15.01.2022 330 km test running on favourite back roads. Head steady now controlling the 'left-right movement hinge' as well as lateral head movement... surprise, no weave now where it used to be!! Revised fork oil volume... no change to suspension sag or smooth road function. Progressive pneumatic pressure controls previous plunge with heavy-to-chattering braking or hard hitting road surfaces.

13.01.2022 Tuning my 1970'S era AMAL Mk1 Concentric carburettors. According to an undated AMAL tuning information pamphlet: '1ST MAIN JET' (re attached).... WHY tune the main jet first? The EXPLANATION... The main jet circuit & pilot jet are BOTH operating at full throttle... that's WHY! i.e. A 220 main jet flows 220 ml/min A pressed-in pilot jet flows 25 ml/min Total fuel flow is 245 ml/min. so At full throttle: Tuning is matching 245 ml/min fuel flow to maximum air flow (main jet CAN be changed). [For another post, another day: '2ND PILOT JET' i.e. Aerating the 25 ml/min of fuel flowing through the pilot jet to set the idle mixture.]

13.01.2022 Macclesfield SAust Lions club Bike Day

11.01.2022 AMAL Mk1 900 series carburettors x 2. Bowls contents = 60 ml (my carbs, modified) (drained simultaneously & measured)... Idling to stall (fuel taps off) = 260 seconds i.e. 4':20" of cold start idle at 1,200 rpm. So, 60 ml / 260 seconds = 0.231 ml/sec (0.231 ml/sec) x 60 seconds = 13.86 ml/min. 13.86 ml/min / 2 carburettor = 6.93 ml/min/carb If, Each carburettor has a pressed-in pilot jet orifice diameter = 0.016" (purported to flow 25 ml/min). Then, 6.93 ml/min / 25 ml/min = 0.2772 (x 100) = 27.72% Conclusion, A pressed-in pilot jet within a carburettor is only operating near 28% of full flow capacity at idle. Ponder, At what slide opening does the pressed-in pilot jet reach 100% of fuel flow (given at 25 ml/min) to supplement the main jet circuit through to 'wide-open-throttle'?

11.01.2022 Hermetically sealing the front suspension. As soon as the seals 'go', there is no more progressive pneumatic compression damping... and ensure all threads are airtight! A list... choose wisely Fork Seals 35x48x11... - Norton 06-5483 (add paper to seal) - Honda 91255-KBH-003 - Kawasaki 44009-016 - Ariete ARI.003T / 53-003-TO - KiwiX FSK-003 - Prox 40.F354811 - Vesrah AR-3508 / 1800032 - Parts Unlimited 04070264 / FS-011 - Sto or K&L 15-1439A - Leakproof Pro-moly 5209 - Leakproof Classic 7209 My choice...

11.01.2022 CANCELLED 'All British Day' South Australia 2021 https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3664345056918756&id=100000298934099

11.01.2022 Call of nature... Sunday afternoon. One tank-er.

10.01.2022 Refueling gets the heart pumping... riding, 'in the zone'!

10.01.2022 Day 5. MRW BSA club

09.01.2022 'Motorcycle Ride Week' in South Australia. Day 1 was to the Balhannah swap meet... no 'official' Nortons made the ride. Organised by 'BSA Owners Club SA'. Me? I drove a car, to tow a trailer, to haul a Norton... Commando, of course!... Day 2: meet up at Mannum... long loop ride or short version to suit the many bikes attending! The 'Veteran & Vintage MCCSA' organised this one ... and the local Lions Club provided the lunch!

08.01.2022 Day 3 of Motorcycle Riding Week, South Australia. Yes... Nortons! i.e. Norton Motorcycle Club South Australia. Count: 9 Nortons ... Commandos mostly. The oldest was the 1926 model from the V&V organised rides (yesterday at Mannum)... the youngest, a 961.... Total count: 35 ->50 (hard to tell... some were re-routed to Williamstown on the way to Birdwood). The journey: eastern suburbs to Lobethal bakery then to Birdwood... i.e. National Motor Museum.

08.01.2022 A wonderful couple... Sir Ken Lucas & Lady Brenda!

05.01.2022 On a recent ride to assess a video mount... A. idle was ok but B. power was down when running & accelerating on main jet circuits. Plug review: lean on right.... Visual inspection of jets on right side... Photo 1. Transfer ports (pin holes) are clear Photo 2. Needle jet clear / main jet occluded Action: Photo 3. Cleared partially blocked main jet Photo 4. Dismantled bowl & locate cause... loose burr from 'posts' inside (from wear by fire safety feature). Preventative action: remove potential for burr on bowl posts with grinder (on left bowl as well & prior to new/replacement bowl fitment).

05.01.2022 Two years ago... heading to Phillip Island Classic races in Victoria, Australia.

04.01.2022 Of no use to me... http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/705-53470-19255-0/1
