06.01.2022 "I'm looking for hand piped cookies/custom cake that won't break the bank for a birthday party" "I'm needing a plumber who won't cost me an arm and a leg" "I wa...nt a custom art piece, my budget is $50" "I'm looking for a no-nasties, locally made, organic skincare range that is cheap." "I'm looking for a business mentor that will let me pick their brain over a coffee" I could list so many more here... --- How many times have you heard some of these quotes?? Tonight I saw 2 posts in my newsfeed asking for similar things. Low cost. Won't break the bank. Cheap. BUT they also want Quality, reliability and good service. As a small business owner who is in the 'trenches' of running a business everyday (and has done for the last 10 years!), not just on my own, but with 500+ women in our SA Woman community, I see the impact of these sorts of comments and these sorts of expectations. It often equates to businesses not lasting beyond a year. It sees business owners working for $5 an hour. It sees business owners burning out. It sees a passion fizzling. It sees a market become purely based on price wars - which then devalues a whole industry (the stories I could tell of the fitness industry as one example!). Going for the cheapest does not always mean you will get what you wanted. Just check out some wedding cake fails for evidence of that!! Small businesses don't get paid unless they work. What they earn also needs to factor in: 1. A wage. 2. Tax. 3. Superannuation. 4. Overheads. 5. Annual Leave Savings (as there is no accrued leave like in a permanent job!) So when you see someone charging what they do, just take a moment to consider why that is. Or when you are looking at an hourly rate for a service, think about what makes up that hourly rate. Running a business IS NOT THE SAME AS HAVING A JOB!! Small businesses support families directly. Small businesses support communities (who are the main sponsors of sporting clubs??). Small businesses are able to provide a level of detail, service, customisation and uniqueness to what they do, that you won't get with the big chains - so please don't expect them to charge the same. I know not everyone can afford certain things, we all have budgets. There is definitely times where I have had to say I'm sorry but I can't afford it right now - and that is ok! But PLEASE don't be disrespectful enough to expect things for next to nothing. After all, would you go to your job and happily go home being paid $10 an hour?? If you want cheap? Go to the likes of the big chain stores. But don't expect the small business that creates a custom cookie for your childs birthday to cost the same. Or the hand designed custom artwork to cost the same as a mass produced print. Or from just one of my own experiences, a personalised Personal Training session to cost the same as a $9.95 per week gym membership. I could truly list so many more examples here! Please VALUE and respect the time, talent and effort that goes into the work these businesses provide. And also think prior to posting things like the above. Also just have a little think about what your community would look like without them... xx Carly
