07.01.2022 ASK SAM is back for 2020! New year, new questions: YOUR QUESTION: Hi, my husband wants to re-tile the bathroom by putting tiles over the top of the old ones. Is this okay to do or should he remove them first? ... SAMS ANSWER: Well yes AND no is the answer. Yes, you can tile over top of old tiles as long as you use the correct glue and prep work. BUT in a bathroom situation, I would NOT recommend it as you really want to redo the waterproofing under the tiles. If you stick them on top they are only stuck to the ground as well as the tile below is. You may find that they can come off the walls and floor when you do it this way. Always best to remove the old ones re-grind the floor so its clean. Apply a good quality primer first then waterproof the walls and floor. Always do three coats of waterproof as its the most important thing to get right on a bathroom build. Also its very expensive to try and fix it once its done and you find it still leaks. Sams Answer: You would need to check with the solar company that you choose. If the carport has been built like a house roof it should be no problem but each solar company has their own attachment details so it would pay to check first, then get the carport built to suit the system used. 02.01.2022 ASK SAM Your question: I would like a quote on a carport extension. What should I look for in a business and what should I ask during a quote? ... Sams Answer: The first thing I would look for is if they are local and not some interstate guy coming in who could leave town as quick as they came in. Ask them to come out to your house to provide a quote. Look at their Facebook page or website for past jobs they have completed. Look for any referrals from old customers and see if you like their product. Were they helpful, were you confident they can do the job you expect? And be very clear on your expectations of them. Always get a written quote and READ it carefully and ask questions if you dont understand. At the end of the day, this is whats getting built for the long term, so you have to be sure. Ask them What other costs could you expect during the build if any. Make sure you ask if it includes a building permit if needed!

02.01.2022 ASK SAM Your question: I want to take a window out and replace it with a sliding door. Do I need to put in a lintel above the window? Can you widen the gap to fit a bigger stacker door in? ... Sams answer: If the door you put in is the same size as the window, you probably wont need to strengthen above the window with a lintel beam as the window was offering no structural support anyway. However, if you want to make a bigger hole by cutting out each side then you will definitely need an engineer report to be done. In that case, a lintel beam may be required. Either job you do will require a build permit and each house is different. It will pay to talk to your builder or certifier before you start and its not a job for a home handyman. Spend the coin on a professional tog et the job done right.
