16.01.2022 Monday Modernist Mood - from my personal collection. As the warmer months approach in the Southern Hemisphere, a young Modernists mind turns to cooler fabrics - madras, linen, seersucker. Herewith, a MTM, pale blue and white, three button seersucker suit. I have matched this with a lightweight lemon Ben Sherman OCBD shirt, Italian grenadine silk, navy blue tie, contrasting Australian bush lemon cotton pocket square by PeggyandFinn and a citrus lapel pin by Bassin & Brown. I pair this ensemble with tan and white Spectator shoes to accentuate the Ivy League feel. Eclectic and cool.

14.01.2022 Modernist Resource # 2: Mods - The New Religion. If youve not read Smiler Andersons amazing book, do your self a favour and get a copy. Filled with quotes from original modernists, the book tracks the emergence of mods from post-war Britain: style, music, dancing, scooters, everything. The next logical step from Richard Barnes.

10.01.2022 As I flit from shop window to window: whats your preferred polo brand? Ben Sherman, Gabicci, Lonsdale, Trojan, Lyle & Scott, Madcap England, Brooks Brothers, Fred Perry, something else?

10.01.2022 Sunday Stylist Spotlight: Charity Shop Find! The coming warmer weather in the Southern Hemisphere is no excuse for a Modernist Gentleman to get around town without a jacket. It simply wont do! Herewith, a Madras-esque blazer that Ive paired with a Brooks Brothers white polo shirt (I like their collars and Ivy League heritage), Brooks Brothers saffron/mustard chinos (the tinge of yellow in the jacket sets off the trousers) and Paolo Vandini leather / suede brogues for a more casual, yet sophisticated look. The jacket / blazer is made of beautifully lightweight cotton and features all external pockets giving it a less structured appeal. You dont have to spend a fortune to look sharp! A relatively inexpensive star piece like this jacket, paired with some quality accessories, works a treat and is a Modernist classic.

04.01.2022 Thursday Tailoring Tip - from my personal collection. On the Blow Up Mod Radio show on the wireless last Sunday, youll have heard the gents speaking with il Maestro, Claudio de Rossi, The Guv at DNAGroove. Herewith, one of Claudios masterpieces from a couple of years back and, by far, my favourite suit. Grey pinstripe, fine wool, double breasted, that Ive paired here with a simple, white poplin, spread collar shirt from shirtmaker Charles Tyrwhitt, a Salvatore Ferragamo ...tie (that I bought from eBay for AUD$40) and a pair of dark brown and tan brogue Spectators. Ive gone with a chunkier Full Windsor knot on the tie (rather than the classic Four In The Hand knot preferred on skinnier toes) as is my preference with spread collar shirts and DB suits. The tip in the title of this post? As a Modernist, detail is EVERYTHING. You want to stand out, to be the Face and not get lost in a sea of Tickets. Saving your pennies and going to a skilled and experienced craftsman like Claudio to make your suit gives you detail like covered buttons, slanted pockets, an exceptional fit (that you dont need to take to your local tailor for remodeling), that you just dont get on other suits. Even the red hand-stitching in the lining is superb! Quality, exceptional, personalized service (he emailed me 4 times about the measurements!) and impeccable styling. Go on, treat yourself. Youre worth it. See more
