25.01.2022 Every now and again I do need to hammer home an important message. Much of the publicity about pets in Townsville is from parvo outbreaks. In my opinion a disease which is actually more important to us right now is Heartworm. Heartworm as the name suggests are worms, upto 30cm long, that live in the heart and lungs of (predominantly) dogs where they do a great deal of damage. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes and the only way to prevent heartworm is through the use of an... annual injection (Proheart SR-12) or monthly preventatives (given religiously). Unfortunately Heartworm is so bad in Townsville there is no room for a missed tablet or even being late for a monthly tablet. There are often no signs of the disease until a lot of damage is already done so unfortunately most dogs carrying Heartworm have no symptoms to alert their owners. So some action points: if your dog is overdue Heartworm prevention speak to me or your vet about whether a test is needed at this point; if you are no good at remembering monthlies then get tested and then get the annual Heartworm prevention injection (I hold my hand up to be someone in this category ); I am now by standard giving ALL puppies the Heartworm injection during the vaccination course but please watch out for reminders as these puppy injections do not last 12 months like in adults because of growth. Sorry for the loooong post but i do feel Heartworm in Townsville requires a large focus. Picture for attention is of the lovely Jimmy who had just received his annual Heartworm injection and was now eagerly accepting/demanding treats!!

24.01.2022 Who says my job is all about playing with cute puppies?! Ok maybe it is sometimes Arlo, Frankie, Oscar and Ollie are definitely pretty high on the cute-o-meter, nice way to end the week with these cuties

24.01.2022 This little nosy parker watched every part of his canine ‘brothers’ vaccine today. Turns out he is called Jeff!! But he is actually a she and favourite place to sleep is in a toilet roll holder A bird called Jeff, love these human names!

21.01.2022 Bundles of groodles! Super cute that’s for sure and boy do they know how to have fun!

21.01.2022 As is often the case I spend almost as much time with the other animals in a house as the actual patients. This was not my patient but her feline sister didn’t stick her around after her weigh in (possibly not the weight she was hoping for ) so Gamer the 6 month old Devon Rex decided she’d have a play and sleep on my scales! She even let me have a little cuddle

20.01.2022 Oh Gary!! Moving the treats away from this clever puppy clearly was no problem for him. My esky makes a great step

20.01.2022 These cats are hysterical! Trying to get in to my bag and steal the treats

20.01.2022 Jerako has to travel across from Maggie Island for his check up. He has been struggling with a respiratory infection but thankfully is responding well to treatment

19.01.2022 Poor little Blossum is a tiny 6.5kgs poodle who was attacked on her driveway yesterday by a large dog out of its yard. She sustained broken blood vessels in her eyes and a puncture wound to her neck. Apparently she was shaken like a doll for several minutes before they were able to free her. Blossum is such a beautiful little soul and its a miracle she was not much more severely injured. Please keep your dogs in their yards for their sake and the sake of defenceless dogs like Blossum.

19.01.2022 Oh my goodness the gremlins have hit my automated vaccine reminder system! It is sending out a dozen texts with random information instead of the vaccine reminders! To anyone who has had them today, or is still getting them (as I can't stop them ) my apologies!!!! I have absolutely no idea how it has happened but I will be watching reminders like a hawk from now on before hitting send

18.01.2022 UPDATE: BARRY HAS BEEN FOUND! Barry had managed to travel from Kirwan to Douglas and was found in someone’s tree. His owner had to club in to the tree to rescue him! What great news One of my feathered patients Barry the eclectus parrot has been swept up by the wind in Kirwan and is missing He is very much loved so please keep an eye out for him as he will not survive long in the wild.

18.01.2022 Another client disappears off and leaves me with their dog. Photo shoot time with Tommy! 5 years old but feels like yesterday I was doing his puppy vaccinations

17.01.2022 Today was very sad saying goodbye to faithful loving old patients so I am posting a happy photo of this gorgeous pup from yesterday called Ace who has THE most stunning eyes. He’s a large bundle of puppy trouble but boy are those eyes amazing!

11.01.2022 This lovely boy is the cat of a wonderful vet nurse I used to work with. She loves her animals like children and is frantic with worry. Sharing in the hope he can be found

09.01.2022 Peek a boo. Good job the client knew where to find her cat as I’d not have found him!

07.01.2022 You don’t get much fresher than this! She was a bit cold and wet due to her inability to regulate her own temperature yet. But with a bit of help she got some milk and warmed up.

05.01.2022 I am now off for a week to spend some quality time with my non-furred kid before school starts back. Back on Monday 25th! (Pic of a puppy with built-in lipstick, so cute! )

05.01.2022 Most cats are not really fond of their annual vaccines....and then there is Tiger! He could not care less what i do as long as he gets a treat at the end. He is 19 years old and a total sweetie

03.01.2022 Gave the famous Norman from ‘What would Norman do?’ his annual vaccination and heart worm prevention injection today. Norman had an interesting approach to being weighed, and staying upright generally really!!

02.01.2022 Storm’s weight had been steadily increasing (first photo) and although she was not huge she has lost her waist line and the extra weight on her joints was going to impact on her mobility in later years. Her owners put her on a diet (using Royal Canin Satiety) and she has lost 5kgs! Look at that happy face and beautiful tucked up belly!

02.01.2022 This little pup was adopted on the weekend but escaped within a couple days so the microchip details were not on the system. His rescuer took him to a vet but then when the details weren’t on the chip took him home. Please share far and wide as someone must know who has him. Whoever it is thinks he’s lost and is caring for him but really he has a home to get back to EDIT: Sunday 14th - Ace has been found safe and sound!
