17.01.2022 Enjoy this list of 15 Fascinating Facts about Electricity: 1. Speed of Light Travel Electricity travels at the light of speed. That totals more than 186,000 miles every second.... 2. Smart and Efficient Electricity always tries to find the easiest path to the ground. 3.Electricity can be made from anything! Electricity can be made from water, wind, light, and even animal manure. 4. Sun vs Electricity In 15 minutes, the sun radiates as much energy onto our globe as humans use during an entire year. Just imagine if we could channel the sun’s energy effectively! 5. Battery Power About 200 years ago, Alessandro Volta discovered that when two strips of different metals were put in a sulfuric acid solution and connected with a wire, electricity began to flow. Voila! The first electric battery was developed! 6. Electricity in Fireflies Fireflies produce light using chemical energy from their food. The light they give off is more efficient than that of a light bulb. Fireflies lose only 1/15 of their energy to heat, whereas 95% of the energy used by an ordinary light bulb is wasted as heat energy. Some deep-sea squids and glowworms in caves also change the chemical energy from food into light. 7. Mr Edison, I presume. Thomas Edison invented more than 2,000 new products, including almost everything needed for us to use electricity in our homes: switches, fuses, sockets and meters. 8. How is it made? Burning coal is the most common way electricity is made in the United States 9. Electrifying A spark of static electricity can measure up to three thousand (3,000) volts. 10. Lightning Power One lightning bolt has enough electricity to service 200 000 homes. 11. Many Firsts First Lighthouse to use electricity Statue of Liberty (1886) and the Brooklyn Bridge was the first bridge to use electricity. 12. Danger in the Workplace Electrocution is one of the top five causes of workplace deaths. 15. Electricity in Iceland Iceland is the first country to supply all electricity from renewable sources
17.01.2022 Residual Current Device (RCD) RCDs detect an imbalance in the electrical current and disconnect the power within 10 to 50 milliseconds, preventing electrocution and fire. In the past 17 years, 29 people including eight children have been electrocuted in homes in Western Australia. Twenty-three of these deaths could have been prevented if Residual Current Devices (RCDs) had been fitted to the power and lighting circuits.... Electrical hazards are often hidden and can be difficult to identify, such as a small hole in an extension lead or a power board damaged internally. Electrical accidents occur in an instant. RCDs are the only device that can protect your family from these hidden dangers and give them a second chance. Installing at least two RCDs in your meter box or distribution board and testing them regularly is a small investment in money and time. It will provide long term protection for you and your family against serious injury and death. LAWS Since 2000 it has been compulsory for all new homes to have two RCDs fitted to protect the power and lighting circuits as part of an electrical installation. To help reduce deaths from electrocution, the Western Australian Government implemented new RCD regulations in August 2009. The new legislation applies to people selling their homes and to landlords. Every home sold or leased must be fitted with a minimum of two RCDs which must protect all power and lighting circuits. When a new tenant takes up residency, landlords will need to install the devices before the lease agreement is signed. However, for homes with a continuing tenancy, landlords have until 8 August 2011 to fit the RCDs.
15.01.2022 Hi Likers This is a little belated but if you haven't already done this now is the time to. April 1st every year is National Smoke Alarm day, and the entire community is encouraged to check they have hard-wired smoke alarms fitted, that alarms are in full working order and new batteries are fitted if required. ... From the 1st of October 2009 it has been compulsory in Western Australia for mains-powered smoke alarms to be fitted in all existing residential buildings prior to sale, and also when a new tenancy agreement is signed for rental properties. The new laws also state that alarms must remain in full working order at all times. Therefore, the installation of a hard-wired or 10-year-battery-life alarm is not a ‘set and forget’ proposition and local Western Australian organisation, the Smoke Alarm Company encourage homeowners to call in a professional annually to check their alarms. It is not safe enough to ensure a hard-wired alarm is working just by pushing the test button. A checklist for homeowners, and those renting properties in terms of annually testing smoke alarms include: 1.Annual Service of smoke alarm(s) in each property, (change 9v battery) 2.Spray test smoke alarm, clean & unblock censors (bugs, insects &spider webs etc) 3.Check smoke alarm is connected to mains power supply by a licensed electrician 4.Inspect and monitor smoke alarm(s) for expiry 5.Ensure that smoke alarm is not older than 10 years
