24.01.2022 Fantastic post from Bush Heritage Australia recognising #NationalWaterWeek and the significant role of flooding in water bird breeding
14.01.2022 How incredible is this malleefowl footage? To keep the nest mound temperature just right for the eggs, Dad keeps a careful balance of sandy soil and decomposing vegetation. Eggs are buried with up to a metre of sand above them and hatchlings can struggle for 15 hours to reach the surface! As ground-dwelling birds, malleefowls face considerable threats from habitat clearing and fragmentation, as well as predation from feral species such as foxes and cats. They are endanger...ed in NSW. 13.01.2022 How about this glimpse of a bush stone-curlew recently captured by a BCT camera trap on a conservation area near Barham on the Murray River! Curlews are camouflage experts who make an eerie, unmistakable call during the night. They are mostly nocturnal and feed on insects and small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs and snakes With population numbers on the decline this conservation area is an ideal spot for bush-stone curlews to live and breed with plenty of fallen timber to conceal them and their nest from predators.

11.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Week everyone! This year’s theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, recognises that First Nations People have occupied and cared for this continent since time immemorial. First Nations People’s knowledge and management of Country has enabled them to endure changing climates and be amongst the first navigators, engineers, farmers, scientists, doctors, bakers and astronomers. At the BCT, we are honoured to have the opportunity to work alongside the oldest living culture in the world to conserve Country, as well as the plants and animals that live there. 04.01.2022 How could we have missed #wildkoaladay yesterday!? To make up for it, please enjoy this video of one of our many champion koala conservationists, Katrina Jeffrey. The BCT protects precious koala habitat through our conservation tenders, many of which target the conservation of specific koala populations in NSW. Katrina was a successful applicant in one of these tenders.... Koala Gardens at Tuckurimba

By recording the birds you see in your backyard (or local park, waterway, patch of bush) you can help researchers identify what species are turning up where or which birds may be on the decline and direct conservation effort where it’s needed most. Whatever your level, beginner to twitcher, all your bird counts matter! Download the app and get started. Go here for more info https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/ and scroll down for a YouTube demo.
