25.01.2022 On International Volunteer Day we have the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution made by volunteers. Kogarah Unit would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all our members for their dedication and commitment to training and assisting our community in times of need.
24.01.2022 Over the weekend we were hit by strong gusty winds causing havoc around Sydney and elsewhere. Kogarah did not escape and in quick succession the Requests For Assistance came pouring in. Not only from our area's residents, but local businesses and even from Police and Fire+Rescue. Despite the very hot and unpleasant conditions our volunteers rallied and soon we had four teams in the field with another as operations support utilising every vehicle we had. Working solidly we did... roof jobs, tree jobs, removed and secured wall cladding and signs, engaged in traffic control and just when we finished all our work we got a call from Bayside our neighbouring Unit asking for help. Again our volunteers rose to the cause and we helped out knowing Bayside and in fact any available SES Unit would always offer to help us if we needed them. That is the mindset and spirit within Members of the SES. Finally upon completion we all enjoyed a hot meal and a debrief before returning home to family and loved ones who gave us the time to help our community. Without their support it would make our volunteers participation so much more difficult. Come and join the team at www.ses.nsw.gov.au
22.01.2022 SES Kogarah were urgently called to a fallen branch entirely blocking a road that serviced multiple units. It was great to be reminded of the spirit of the local community with people offering to help us, however due to safety concerns and protocols, whilst appreciated, we had to refuse that help but valued the thoughts. It also was a great example of the team environment we at Kogarah Unit work in and no doubt other SES Units share. It doesn't matter a Members rank or how experienced they are as we all share the work to complete the job and assist our local community. What a great team and organsisation to belong to.
22.01.2022 Today we pay our respects to emergency services volunteers who have sadly lost their lives while protecting their communities. The annual Emergency Services Volunteer Memorial Service is being held in Sydney with NSW SES, NSW Rural Fire Service, Marine Rescue NSW, and the Volunteer Rescue Association at 11am. Events such as these are a timely reminder of the selflessness and passion of our volunteers! View ceremony here https://bit.ly/3djvzjK
18.01.2022 R U OK? A conversation could change a life. If you feel like something’s not quite the same with someone you know there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re saying or doing - trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them Are you OK?... You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life. 14.01.2022 Another busy week for our volunteers of Kogarah Unit. Earlier in the week we had a number of our Members doing their FR fitness assessment. Some needed this to apply for upcoming Flood Rescue training courses and some needed to re-certify for Flood Rescue roles to ensure our Unit's operational capability. Later in the week a number of the Unit's senior personnel met to discuss and plan our Units future direction to enable Kogarah Unit to play it's part in best helping our co...mmunity and assisting the NSW SES become the best volunteer Emergency Service. Then of course on the weekend our volunteers gave up their time to help residents affected during the strong winds that swept through Sydney. Not only did they assist our local people but once finished they helped in other areas harder hit. As can be seen there is a lot to do with the NSW SES and there are roles for all people with plenty of skills you can learn. Interested in finding out more or volunteering www.ses.nsw.gov.au We hope to see you wearing orange.

11.01.2022 On Friday afternoon we assisted Eastern Beaches Police Area Command with a land search for a missing lady in the Kensington area. Our thanks to Burwood, Canter...bury, City of Sydney, Ashfield-Leichhardt, Hurstville, Kogarah, North Sydney, Marrickville, Waverley Woollahra, Ku-Ring-Gai and Mosman units for also attending. While searching, one team found an injured rainbow lorikeet, which we captured and handed over to WIRES for further care. The missing person has been located safe by police. #NSWSES #LandSearch #WIRES
10.01.2022 On Sunday we had the pleasure of welcoming 15 Cubs and their Leader from the Buddhist Light International Association Kogarah Cub Scouts BLIA SYD BLIA Scout Sydney This wonderful group of cubs aged 5-10 are working towards their SES badge, designed to increase youth members’ awareness and disaster resilience. We set them a bunch of fun challenges to test their knowledge and skills of how to respond in an emergency situation, and understand the important role SES ...volunteers have in our community as the primary responders for floods, storms and tsunami. The most popular challenge was ‘SES Ninja Warrior’ - a tightrope walk to experience how tricky it is to balance on a wet rooftop. The Cubs practised tying knots onto a tarp, and had some very well-thought out arguments as to why they chose certain items when building their own Emergency Kits. There were a few squirms, squeals and disgusted looks when the Cubs put their hands into ‘floodwater’ to find all sorts of critters, rocks, sand and dirt. This was followed by 15 very professional radio calls to advise our radio operator what they found and why we should never enter floodwater. The Cubs learnt how to call for help on a mobile phone using 000 and the Emergency+ App, and practised what they would say on a call to emergency services. Finally, they tested their aim, learning how to effectively throw a bag of rope to rescue ‘people’ (orange cones) from moving ‘floodwater’ (grass) - a few bullseyes impressed all of us! We aren’t quite sure who enjoyed themselves more - the Cubs or our volunteers! What a fabulous way to kick off our community engagement in 2021! If your community group, school, OOSH or preschool would like to join us for some fun activities to learn about the NSW SES or about preparing for storms and floods, please visit www.ses.nsw.gov.au or message Kogarah via Facebook.
10.01.2022 Seasons Greetings from Kogarah Unit. Wishing you a safe and merry Christmas. From our [volunteer] family to yours.
07.01.2022 Is your home storm ready? It is important to keep your gutters and downpipes clear as blockages can cause the water to overflow under the eaves into the roof cavity. Clear leaves from the valleys of your roof as these will make their way into the gutters in heavy rain. More information in preparing your home can be found here https://www.ses.nsw.gov.au//before-a-st/prepare-your-home/.
05.01.2022 Remembrance Day Each year on this day we observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. 1 minute... 11 am 11 November #WeRememberThem

01.01.2022 Whilst we did not get the severe weather predicted by the BoM we did get some strong gusts. As a result a request was placed for our assistance to a branch threatening a neighbouring home. Upon inspection it was determined whilst not particularly big it would be quite a technical job so of all our volunteers who made themselves available a strong and experienced team was chosen. The team arrived and the situation assessed as a plan was put together and communicated. Under the... watchful eyes of the resident and neighbours a number of skills and techniques were used whilst the team completed the job in a methodical, careful and ultimately successful way. No damage to the tiles, guttering, walls or fence and the only clue left was the sawdust in the neighbour's drive. After midnight the team then returned to Unit to check gear, sharpen and lubricate saws. Thanks again to our volunteers who are only to willing to assist the community often after a long day at work themselves and of course their families that allow them. Jobs like these show how the hours of dedicated training and skills development, work so well for the benefit of all. Interested, check out www.ses.nsw.gov.au
