25.01.2022 We hope this weeks devotional will encourage you in your spiritual walk. Thanks to Rev Dr Linda Stargel for writing this devotional. You are welcome to share this and include in your church newsletters if you wish; we just ask that you please give credit to NTC and the author. Thank you! 1 THESSALONIANS 4:13-18... 13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words. DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT With the death of some of the earliest Christ-followers came a realization that Jesus would not return as quickly as expected. In order to avert despair and confusion in the early church, Paul penned the words of reassurance found in this passage. These words were written for the living, since those who had fallen asleep needed no comfort. Believers were to use Paul’s words to encourage one another (4:18). Paul’s words did not just offer Christ-followers consolation about the fate of the faithful dead, though. A careful reflection shows that they were intended to encourage the living on how to live victoriously. Paul’s word fit into the larger passage beginning in 4:1 that contains instructions on how to live in a way that pleases God. Having assurance of a future hope prevents incapacitating despair and allows one to live faithfully and expectantly in the here and now. PRAYER Lord, may your promises for the future motivate and inspire us to live hopefully in the present. Rev Dr Linda Stargel Academic Dean Nazarene Theological College

ROMANS 13:8-14... 8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet, and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. DEVOTIONAL: LOVE DOES NO HARM TO A NEIGHBOUR As graduate nurses we recited the Florence Nightingale pledge as part of our pinning ceremony. We vowed to abstain from whatever was deleterious to those in our care. This principle of doing no harm is not unique to the nursing profession. It forms the basis of many other medical, legal, and ethical guidelines. As Christ-followers we similarly covenant to love our neighbours in ways that do them no harm (Rom 13.10). Self-serving love, controlling love, and versions of tough love that are uncaring or self-righteous are excluded. Love that does no harm must be thoughtful and deliberate both in its individual and corporate expressions. It is mindful of the uniqueness of each neighbourtheir strengths and vulnerabilitiesso that personal affliction is avoided. Love that does no harm considers the consequences of one’s actions for the neighbour as well as the self. This exemplary, uncontaminated love was shown to us by God in Christ. In mindfulness of God’s gift to us, we respond with similar acts of love toward our neighbour. PRAYER God, give us eyes to see our neighbours as you see them. Give us the capacity to love them with Christ-like love. Dr. Rev Linda Stargel Nazarene Theological College

Thank you! 1 THESSALONIANS 5:1-11 ... 1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. 2 For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 When they say, There is peace and security, then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! 4 But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; 5 for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 6 So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; 7 for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT Most of us don’t like being left in the dark when it comes to important information. Maybe that is why Christians have been trying to predict the ‘times and seasons’ of Christ’s second coming for nearly 2000 years. This is despite Jesus’s clear teaching that, about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father (Mark 13:32). While we cannot know the exact date or many of the details concerning this phenomenon, our passage reminds us that we are not in darkness to be surprised by this, since we are all children of light and children of the day. As such, we are given clear examples of how to be prepared for Christ’s return. We are to put on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet of the hope of salvation; we are to encourage one another and build up each other. In other words, the future (both the good and the bad parts of it) do not change our calling and purpose. We are to live each day placing our hope in Christ and moving into our world with love, compassion, and justice. In this, God will be glorified, and we will be ready! PRAYER Gracious God, grant us a deeper confidence in you. May our hope be sure. May our faith continue to deepen. May our actions continue to be filled with love for all. Lord, we pray that your Holy Spirit would continue to transform us from glory to glory that you might be glorified in our lives and in your world. In Christ’s holy name, amen. Rev Dr Rob A. You are welcome to share this and include in your church newsletters if you wish; we just ask that you please give credit to NTC and the author. Thank you! MATTHEW 23:1-121... Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; 3 therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. 4 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. 5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. 6 They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, 7 and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. 8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. 9 And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father, the one in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. DEVOTIONAL This passage is a reminder that we are called to humble servanthood. Jesus is tough on Scribes and Pharisees, but what he is underlining is that expecting to receive honour and being treated as socially dominant is not, in sight of the Kingdom of God, important, pertinent, or relevant. It brings nothing useful to the wellbeing of the community they are supposed to serve. It is as if Jesus is saying: Do not ask what your followers can do for you, but rather ask what you can do for others. The lesson to take from this passage is how to be a better servant. How to love God deeply and neighbour genuinely. To live the life of a servant is in the eye of God the characteristic of a real leader. There is no greater love than to give your life for a friend (John 15:13). Jesus gave his life in complete love, humility and service for humanity and he is our greatest leader. PRAYER Heavenly Father, help us serve in humility to show by our actions the love of Jesus. This is how the world can see God on earth. Amen! Andrée Pursey NTC Librarian Nazarene Theological College

PHILIPPIANS 4: 1-9 - DON'T STOP REJOICING 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. DEVOTIONAL As a teenager I loved singing a round based on verse 4. But singing about rejoicing always is one thing following through is more difficult. In the early 1990s we lived in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. This is a place of rugged beauty and rough roads. On the way home from a trip to see the flooded Coopers Creek and Lake Eyre we had an experience of learning to trust God. We’d had several flat tyres during the trip but continued on until we had our 4th flat! We were out of spare tyres and tubes. As night approached, we picnicked at the side of the remote dirt road and with our boys sang songs of rejoicing. We had no idea how the situation would be resolved, but we had peace that God was with us. Sometime later a vehicle approached us. The rough and ready driver said he had a spare tyre but was reluctant to give it to us because he might not get it back. And then he lent it to us anyway and followed us back to the main road to make sure we got home safely! God used a tough bushie to bless us and to teach us and our sons that we served a God who could be trusted. PRAYER O God of peace, sometimes we fail to trust you in all that we do. Help us to rejoice always in the good, and in the bad knowing that you will never leave us. Help us to trust you to provide the peace we need to live our lives each day. Amen.
