25.01.2022 Managing Change Proposal for ANU Executive & ANU Council at The Australian National University. We're accepting feedback as part of the consultation process for the next two weeks. #ResistCutsAtANU

23.01.2022 Bianca Hennessy, a casually employed NTEU ACT Division member working at The Australian National University, will be speaking at the CBR Student Protest: NO Uni Fee Hikes, NO Education Cuts! which begins at 1pm today in Garema Place. If you're in the area or can make it, get along to stand up for #EducationForAll.

23.01.2022 We encourage staff to #VoteNoANU as voting opens TODAY to vary The Australian National University Enterprise Agreement to withhold your negotiated pay rise. Voting no doesn't mean you don't want to support ANU, it just means that we need to sit down and negotiate an approach which considers equity, protects jobs and provides financial transparency. More info at nteu.org.au/anu/voteno.

23.01.2022 You know something is seriously wrong when an employer has to put aside potentially tens of millions of dollars for the 'provision for underpayments of casual academics’ in their Annual Report. Thank you to all our NTEU members and the hard work of NTEU New South Wales for successfully demanding that UNSW conduct an audit into the underpayment of casuals last year.

23.01.2022 The Young Workers Centre ACT is running a survey for young workers (under 25). If you're a young worker, you get both the opportunity to contribute to workers' rights in Canberra AND and the opportunity to win a $200 gift card! If you don't fit into the age bracket but know friends or family who do, please also help by passing the link on. UnionsACT

23.01.2022 Sign the NTEU's open letter calling for genuine consultation here: nteu.org.au/anu/ResistCutsAtANU "Staff members at the Australian National University say they need more details on the university's financial position as they face the prospect of losing 215 jobs on top of 250 voluntary separations and hundreds of casual staff being told they have no work this year. The National Tertiary Education Union organised a protest and an open letter to demand further information and data, including how the management arrived at the target of $103 million in savings each year from 2021, an approved 2019 annual report and modelling for enrolments and revenue."

23.01.2022 Following our open staff meeting, we're encouraging all ANU staff, students, and the broader ANU community to come along on Tuesday at 12pm to resist job cuts at The Australian National University. #ResistCutsAtANU

22.01.2022 531 ACU staff and the NTEU told their university Senate to defer job and pay cuts until management comes to the table with real transparency and proper consulta...tion. VC Greg Craven and DVC Stephen Weller are trying to rush through $42 million in brutal job and pay cuts, just to prop up a huge $46 million surplus. To "prove" they need to cut, they've given staff a single A4 page of finances - showing ACU has over $60 million cash in the bank, over $484 million in reserves, and a huge surplus during COVID. ACU staff won't let management put profits before people, use COVID as an excuse to fire over 200 dedicated ACU workers, or slash the pay of those that remain. You can see the text of the senate submission online here: www.nteu.org.au/acu/senate_open_letter

22.01.2022 "Universities Australia conservatively estimates that the sector will lose another $2 billion in 2021, bringing thousands more job losses. This will inevitably result in a lack of research in vital areas, like medicine, public health, and technology, as well as poorer course quality." One of our fantastic ANU members, Blair Williams published this piece in The Canberra Times today. Click to read more.

22.01.2022 NTEU members will be there when Parliament resumes, calling on the Federal Government to #fundunifairly. We're also calling on Senate crossbenchers to #blockthebill - the Federal Government's proposals will harm both staff and students.

21.01.2022 Photos from today's rally against outsourcing & job cuts at The Australian National University, where we unveiled our own Managing Change Proposal - democratise the university! 21.01.2022 Well done to ANU Observer for their reporting on the proposal to withhold staff wages at The Australian National University. NTEU ANU Branch President Matthew King: "ANU staff, particularly fixed-term and casual staff, deserve better from one of Australia’s wealthiest universities. #VoteNoANU

20.01.2022 The ANU Recovery Plan 'will require a further reduction of 215 positions'. Our members decided to visit Chancelry at The Australian National University to show them what 215 people look like. #ResistCutsAtANU Visit our website: nteu.org.au/anu/ResistCutsAtANU

17.01.2022 Did your question get answered at ANU Management's staff forum this morning? If not, let us know on the form below. We'll be putting questions to The Australian National University in a de-identified way and want you to contribute. #ResistCutsAtANU

16.01.2022 Together, we stopped a funding cut and a fee hike becoming law this week. Now, we need a full and frank inquiry until they are off the table completely #FundUniFairly

15.01.2022 Announcement today at The Australian National University that they 'will require a further reduction of 215 positions', following 250 voluntary separations and hundreds of casual and fixed-term job losses. We're hosting an Open Meeting for all ANU staff - members and non-members - at 12pm on Friday. Zoom link: https://nteu.zoom.us/j/91611890914 In the meantime, it's about time ANU Chancellor Julie Bishop called her former colleagues to demand that they #fundunifairly.

15.01.2022 In the past year, ANU students and staff have faced a wave of attacks including job cuts course cuts, and even the disestablishment of entire course programs. Join students and staff in protesting this Wednesday at 1pm!

14.01.2022 Solidarity with our WA NTEU casual members.

12.01.2022 Congratulations to the ANU community today, who came out to resist job cuts at The Australian National University. We delivered a letter to Chancelry which we're now inviting staff, students, alumni and the broader ANU community to sign at nteu.org.au/anu/ResistCutsAtANU.

12.01.2022 ANU staff have overwhelmingly voted to resist job cuts in a meeting hosted by the NTEU today. We'll be mobilising members for an action at 12pm on Tuesday, in Kambri at ANU. More info to follow.

11.01.2022 At least 10 campuses are involved in underpayment scandals. NTEU has already recovered millions in stolen wages for members across the university sector and continues gathering evidence to launch a wave of class actions. If you are a casual employee and believe you have been subject to wage theft, then please join the NTEU campaign by completing this survey:... https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/37RQJVT If you are not a casual, but work with casuals, please share the survey with your colleagues. Non-casuals who believe they have been underpaid can also contact [email protected]. https://www.abc.net.au//rmit-uq-now-among-univers/12565528

08.01.2022 ANU Branch President Matthew King says after very narrow vote ANU will now have to decide whether to go to FWC to implement changes. "It is clear ANU staff are divided on whether it would be best to do so."

08.01.2022 Our members have outlined the key financial questions The Australian National University need to answer before asking staff to give up their pay. Until they're answered satisfactorily, we need to #VoteNoANU. Find out more at: nteu.org.au/anu/voteno/need. The NTEU’s questions for ANU Executive are: It is extraordinary the University is asking us to make this decision without even the most basic information about the state of the institution’s finances. Can we please see the 2...019 Annual Report, which has already been approved by the University Council? Can you please release the budget papers for 2020, and in particular the basis for pre-COVID projections for 2020? We note that in 2018 the University had a net operating surplus of $225.6m, following a surplus of $169.2m in 2017. What was the operating surplus for 2019? How has the University invested its surpluses over the last ten years? What is the current estimate for the 2020 operating deficit (not simply the revenue shortfall relative to pre-COVID budget)? Was the university insured for property damage created by the hailstorm? Other universities have announced plans to finance 2020 and 2021 deficits by drawing on financial assets and borrowing. For example, the University of Sydney is planning to run a $200m deficit this year, half financed from liquid assets and half from a credit facility. What are current plans for financing an operating deficit for 2020, and what prevents our wealthy university from financing a deficit without pay cuts? Can you please detail the composition of the university’s financial assets, including information around which assets are legally tied to specific purposes (rather than tied by institutional decisions)? We note that according to the 2018 Annual Report, ANU had at the end of that year a total of $1.6 billion in investments, with only $321 million reported as restricted funds for purposes of funding scholarships, prizes, foundations and endowments. Why is the proposed $250 million cash reserve necessary? Can you please provide details of any bank credit facilities or other pre-negotiated sources of finance the University has access to? The ANU is considerably less leveraged than comparable G08 universities. Can you please explain the University’s debt management principles, and explain why the University cannot borrow to spread the impact of the revenue shortfall?

08.01.2022 We've updated our #VoteNoANU campaign website - check it out for information on why we're recommending voting no to the pay freeze. We're also organising local area meetings for Monday and Tuesday ahead of the vote opening. Everything is at nteu.org.au/anu/voteno!

06.01.2022 Staff at The Australian National University have voted (by a less than 1 percent margin) to endorse varying the Enterprise Agreement to defer staff pay. Many ANU staff - members and non-members - will be disappointed with the result, though there were many positives from this whirlwind 14 day campaign. See our Media Release: http://www.nteu.org.au//Media-Release%3A-NTEU-Response-to- Our union is as strong as its members, and theres a lot to build on for Enterprise Bargaining in 12 months time. If you're not yet a member, join at nteu.org.au/join. As this vote shows, every member makes a difference.
