24.01.2022 NAIDOC Week | Last week Northern Sydney Local Health District celebrated NAIDOC Week with a flag raising ceremony. Here’s some of our staff at the ceremony at Royal North Shore Hospital. The theme for NAIDOC Week this year Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.
22.01.2022 SUPPORTIVE CARE | For Vincenzo Tassone, his independence has always been important and he wasn’t going to let something like heart failure keep him off his feet for too long. The former Willoughby fruit shop owner has benefited from working with Cardiac Supportive Care Transitional Nurse Practitioner Kelly Hanvey, allowing him to live at home with his wife Barbara at his side and avoid hospital. In the five short months since commencing in the role Kelly has already seen bene...fits for patients like Vincenzo and countless others. I’m here to help create that bridge between cardiology and palliative care, Kelly said. Linking with Royal North Shore Hospital, Ryde Hospital and Hornsby Hospital, Kelly has developed a simple aim; starting the journey earlier to help make it easier. We’re hoping to improve quality of life and symptom control for patients. We’re also hoping to reduce readmission rates into hospital and avoidance of ICU, develop collaborative and integrated services she said. It’s not about end of life care, it’s about supportive care and it should start at an earlier phase of the patient journey. See more
21.01.2022 BIGGER and BRIGHTER | The Child and Family Health Centre located in the Balgowlah Stockland shopping centre has moved into its new premises at the Dalwood Children’s Health Services at Seaforth. The exciting move to the new Seaforth Child and Family Health Centre means improved access to child and family health facilities for parents with young children. Parents will have improved facilities including baby change rooms and accessible toilets, pram parking, larger shared meeti...ng spaces, while still maintaining links to public transport. Free parking is available and the centre is accessible by bus. By co-locating with other child and family health services, families will have the convenience of a one-stop shop, if children need referral to the other services onsite. 16.01.2022 SOUTH AUSTRALIA ALERT | NSW Health is asking people coming from South Australia, by whatever mode of transport, to complete a declaration form to check if they have visited any of the venues of concern identified by the South Australian authorities and provide contact details if follow-up is required. This also applies to people who have been in South Australia within the past 14 days. The form is available here: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/.../d1966e43-d4a7-4090... The... list of venues of concern are available here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/.../areas-of-concern-south-australia Anyone who has been in South Australia since Friday 6 November should regularly monitor the SA Health alert page for venues of concern and follow the advice of SA Health. They must immediately self-isolate if they have been to any venues where this is advised, and get tested if even the mildest of symptoms appear. Travellers who are not NSW residents who have visited any of these venues will not be permitted to travel to NSW until the 14-day period has elapsed. Non-residents wishing to transit through NSW will be allowed to do so, provided they take the most direct route and can do so in a way that poses no risk to others. The form will be distributed to South Australian travellers arriving at NSW transport hubs such as airports, and in areas such as Broken Hill which is a high-traffic location. Travellers are asked to fill in the form within the 24-hour period before they arrive in NSW, and may be asked to produce their declaration form. NSW Health continues to advise NSW residents to defer non-essential travel to Adelaide, while people from Adelaide should defer non-essential travel to NSW. See more

13.01.2022 MOTHER’S DAY | Penelope never thought she would have three boys 16 months apart. Her beautiful identical twin boys, George and Henry, were born at 31 weeks and have been in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Royal North Shore Hospital since just after Easter. George and Henry won’t be able to go home until their due date in June. Penelope said she can’t wait to get the whole family home together. They live on a farm four hours from Sydney. Everyone keeps asking what... it’s like to be a family of five and we haven’t really gotten to experience it yet, she said. Penelope said she felt very lucky to be celebrating Mother’s Day with George and Henry and her older son Freddie. It feels like a miracle really. We are so thankful to the staff that have made this possible our boys wouldn’t have made it without them. Happy Mother’s Day to Penelope and all the mums in our community.

05.01.2022 MANLY HOSPICE | Construction has commenced on Australia’s first $19.5 million dedicated palliative care hospice for young people living with an incurable illness. Yesterday Premier Gladys Berejiklian joined Member for Manly James Griffin and Federal Senator Andrew Bragg for the turning of the first sod. We were also delighted to welcome former Bear Cottage patients Matthew Van Hoek and Scott Green to the site, which they will be able to visit upon its completion, and generou...s donor Kay Van Norton who has made the project possible. Construction of the hospice is scheduled for completion in late 2022 and is funded by the NSW and Federal Governments as well as generous community donations. Health Infrastructure is working closely with the Northern Sydney Local Health District and expert clinicians to deliver the hospice, which will be located at the former Manly Hospital site on the North Head headland. For further information and to support the Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice, visit www.nslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/Manly.
04.01.2022 REMEMBRANCE DAY - Today, is Remembrance Day, a day where we come together to remember those who have died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts. Historically, the day marks the time at 11 am on 11 November 1918 when the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare during World War I. More than 100 years on, we are not without our own challenges, but we still owe a great deal to those who fought bravely for Australia. It is important we acknowledge those contributions so the memories of those that have fallen live on for generations to come. #lestweforget2020

03.01.2022 #IND2021 | Happy International Nurses Day to all of our wonderful nurses at all of our hospitals and in our community. Today we celebrate the exceptional care, devotion and kindness they provide to our patients and their families. The bravery and courage nurses have shown in the past year has been inspiring. In the face of this pandemic, nurses have helped lead the way and no matter what is thrown at them next we know they will continue to do what needs to be done, and do it with their patients’ needs at heart.
