25.01.2022 Northern Territory Mataranka and onto Darwin Leaving Mt Isa, we crossed the border into the Northern Territory where we spent our first night at a great roadside free camp about 70km from Three Ways and the Stuart Hwy. With approximately 600km to our next stop of Mataranka we were up early the next morning and on the run. Arriving late in the afternoon and very tired from the long day, we setup camp at the Mataranka Homestead caravan park where we would base ourselves for t...he next few days. Since leaving the coast of northern Queensland approximately two weeks 2 weeks ago and exploring the outback, it hadn’t been easy for the Mrs, she has a low tolerance for high temperatures, dirt, flies and insects, combined with not easily being able to get fresh produce and the bush camps with little or no facilities, she had had a few drama episodes and home sick talk. Not happy Jan However, this all changed the moment we arrived Mataranka thermal pool, I saw her face with a big smile, the beautiful colours and warm water convinced her to go swimming and washed away the dirt and all the worries, she turned to me saying that she never expected this and was pleasantly surprised with this oasis in the desert. Whilst here we also checked out the Bitter Springs, another beautiful thermal pool just up the road and the site where Elsey Homestead once stood. The homestead and its story was the basis of the true store made into the movie We of the Never Never. From Mataranka we headed north to Darwin where we based ourselves for the next 7 days. The Mrs was very excited, and first stop was the shopping mall for some well-deserved retail therapy. We spent the first few days exploring the city, Mindil Beach sunset markets, local museums and the famous jumping crocodiles of the Adelaide River.

19.01.2022 Hello Queensland and Gold Coast. After crossing the border at Tweed Heads, which really played havoc with our phones and second guessing exactly what time it was, we headed up to the Gold Coast where we would base ourselves for the next 7 days. Gold Coast is a subtropical climate city, driving in you cannot miss seeing the large tropical plantations of sugarcane and bananas, these green trees presented an outstanding and very different views than all the other states we had v...isited thus far, in conjunction with the hot and humidity weather the Mrs thought that she was back in her home country - Malaysia. We also noticed that canals with luxury waterfront homes are everywhere and surround this beautiful city and you can’t miss the many skyscraper that run up and down the coast line. Whilst the city is mostly known for its theme parks and world class beaches, it offered us the best of both worlds, as only a short drive inland there was also stunning natural beauty of such places as Mt Tamborine, with Curtis Falls and quick frothy at Fortitude Brewing Company, followed up with Springbrook National Parks Natural Bridge and Purling Brook Falls. Both places provided numerous bush walks and spectacular waterfalls and lookouts.

15.01.2022 UPDATE - the car has been located safe and sounds, looks like we played an early April fools joke on ourselves. Thanks to every one that commented and shared.. the Run can go on

10.01.2022 Ballina, Byron Bay and bye bye New South Wales From Gloucester the run continued, we spent a night at a free camp south of Coffs Harbour. The next morning, we were up early as we wanted to stop in Coffs Harbour for Mrs to hunt for some local seafood. She came back with a full bag of cooked king size prawn saying that she would be happy for the next few days with this prawn buffet. Coffs Harbour you are a champion! Our camp destination for the next 4 days was a showground at A...lstonville which is about 15 minutes from Ballina and was a great spot to base ourselves to explore the area. After arriving and setting up I caught up with a family friend Sharon for coffee and organised a night out during our stay here. It was great to meet her for the first time that I can remember and introduce the Mrs. The following day we made our way up to a holiday beach town which is also popular for surfers & scuba divers named Byron Bay. A few minutes before we got into the center of the town, we realised that if we had a Kombi van and a surfboard and we would have fitted right in. The traffic was mad, but understandable with so many sunning beaches and natural beauty around. One of the highlights here for me was taking a photo at the eastern most point of Australia. This is a trifecta for me now with previously being at the southern and western points, only one left to do now. We explored most of the beautiful coastline between Ballina and Byron Bay and got some great shots. We also reflected on the past 6 weeks we have had in NSW and ACT. Such an amazing state & territory that we have been blessed to experience and create life long memories. We shall be back!!!!

09.01.2022 Back to the coast and heading north. After leaving the spectacular Blue Mountain region we headed back to the coast. First stop was the Central Coast and a small town called Budgewoi where we spent a few days exploring area including The Entrance, where we got to see the pelican feeding. We also visited the Ken Duncan gallery and got some inspiration for our photography Form here the Run continued up to Maitland where we stayed at the local showgrounds which was centrally loc...ated to explore Newcastle and the Barossa valley where we had a few tasty beverages. Our final stop on this leg was Gloucester. This was one of the places that I had most been looking forward to on this trip. On arrival we found a charming little country town which is surrounded by beautiful hills and farms. It was on a Sunday; the town was quiet with not many stores opened including my favourite camping store / manufacturer Drifta. Standing outside the locked gate, I did not feel any disappointment as I knew that I would be returning the next day. I asked the Mrs to take photo of me next to Drifta’s signboard and shared it on the Drifta’s fans FB page. To my surprise, when we turned up at Drifta the next day morning, the Retail Sales Manager Mark recognised us and organised a grand tour of the facility by John who is the father of the founder and owner of the company Luke. We were very grateful and felt the visit was a valuable one. This Australian made and owned company has wide range of products and is great success story. After the tour, I picked up a snow peak fire pit, something I had been eyeing off for some time and eager to try out.

07.01.2022 We have been remote for the past few days and this is what I love best about it, you can have your 5-star resort I’ll have the million star one. . . #exploringaustralia #nunnsontherun #lapofoz #australia #photography #caravaning #seeaustralia #australiagram #ig_australia #focusaustralia #australian_shotz #campingcollective... #travelaus #aussietraveller #discoveraus #takemetoaustralia #ig_aussiepix #instatravel #wow_australia #travelblog #wow_australia2019 #australiapassion #aussie_images #astrophotography #canon6dmarkii See more

05.01.2022 Bundaberg to Airlie Beach Continuing the Run north we headed to Bundaberg where we stayed at a free camp for a couple of nights. I had been looking forward to visiting here since we left home as it’s the home of the iconic Bundaberg Rum factory. Whilst the Mrs wasn’t too keen on doing the tour and waited outside, I thoroughly enjoyed it including the tastings and picked up a nice bottle royal liqueur salted caramel from their shop afterwards. From Bundaberg we moved up to c...oast to the historic town of Seventeen Seventy or 1770 and The town of Agnes Water, which is built on the site of the second landing in Australia by James Cook and the crew of HM Bark Endeavour in May 1770. We based ourselves at the workman’s beach campground for a few days whilst we explored the historic seaside village. From 1770 and after an overnight free camp just north of Rockhampton we spent a couple of days in Mackay, we stayed at the Bakers Creek caravan park and had a great time exploring the Eungella hinterland area and was also the last chance for shopping/ retail therapy for the Mrs for some time. The final destination on this leg of the trip was Airlie Beach. We arrived mid-morning and were in awe of the beautiful setting of the town/ shops which was structured like a tropical paradise. The competition of tour agents in town is everywhere, we were overwhelmed by choices that we have. The aqua blue water is WOW factor feeling like in a heaven. On the second day here, we took time to do a day cruise which took us around over to the famous Whitsunday Island and the stunning Whitehaven Beach and the swirling sands as well as snorkel of the reef. Airlie Beach was a highlight of our trip through Queensland and marked the further North we would be heading for our big lap.

04.01.2022 Outback Queensland Longreach to Mt Isa and Goodbye QLD We said goodbye to Airlie Beach and commenced our inland outback experience, which also marked the start of our trip across the top of Australia. Whilst there are still many places that we are looking forward to visiting it was also the start of trip west and home. After an overnight stop at a free camp in Clermont we made our way to Longreach where we would spend a couple of days exploring the Qantas Founders Outback M...useum and Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. The original home of Qantas - the proud Aussie name was another spot that had been on our must do list since starting our big lap. The ticket price included entry to the museum and tour of the 747 and 707 jets with a professional guide. The highlight for us was the story of a group of volunteers some of them Qantas retired engineers, and how they restored this first registered Australia 707 jet which at the time had been retired and was about to be scrapped at Southend Airport in the United Kingdom. And their magical plan of flying it all the way back to Longreach after Qantas Founders purchased the jet and donated to the heritage museum. From Longreach we ran to Winton where we stayed at a beautiful free camp by Long Waterhole for a few days which was a great base to explore both famous dinosaur attractions in the area. The highlight for us was the dinosaur stampede at Lark Quarry where they unearthed over 3300 footprints dating back 95 million years and to date is the only place on earth this has been found. The proceeds of the admission fee for the 2 attractions are used for the science team’s on-going work, research and studying, we were left with an absolute amazing feeling and unique experience. While here we also headed to the music fence and played a few beats. From Winton we headed to our final stop on the leg of Mount Isa, along the way we stopped for a quick look at Crocodile Dundee's Walkabout Creek Hotel in Mackinlay, this was used as a set for the famous movie. We spent a few days Mount Isa resting up after some long days and big km’s of the past week and gave us a chance to undertake some cleaning and maintenance. All up we spent over 5 weeks in Queensland and got to see a fair bit of it, another beautiful state and part of Australia that has provided lifelong memories and desires to come back to.

03.01.2022 Sunshine Coast and Hervey Bay After putting our Brisbane disaster behind us, we headed up to the Sunshine Coast for 4 days and stayed at the Alex Beach caravan park. The one thing that has continued to impress us with Queensland so far is that within half an hour of the beautiful coast line and beaches are equally as beautiful hinterlands with rain forests and waterfalls. Whilst here, I caught up with Terry who I used to work with, we had a great boy’s night out and a lovely ...BBQ dinner at his place where both the Mrs got to meet also. Terry also chauffeured me around for a day while the car was getting serviced and show me some of great hinterland locations, thanks again Terry! Sunshine Coast region is famous for its stretch of coastline, we decided to spend a day driving from Caloundra up to Noosa Heads experiencing the popular scenic shoreline trip. As expected, it was stunning ocean views at every turn, and was relaxing, unwind by this natural beauty. Driving into Noosa, we could see traffic congestion everywhere with people and vehicles. What a busy town. However, we didn’t seem to lose our patience for the traffic slow to a crawl. Undoubtedly this town is one of Australia’s most stylish/ elegant shopping strips, from fine dining restaurants to fashionable boutiques and spectacular resorts, was too much to see. Our 4 days here flew by and it was time to say goodbye and we moved to Maryborough and a low-cost camp just south of Hervey Bay which was a great place to explore the Stunning Frazer Coast.

01.01.2022 Brisbane, Australia Zoo and Our Stolen Car / biggest Russell Coight moment. From the Gold Coast the run continued north to Brisbane, for the first couple of days we based ourselves at a free camp in Beenleigh where we treated to an amazing display of what I called the ‘sky on fire’ sunset. After leaving here we setup at the Lawnton show grounds north of Brisbane. Ok now for the biggest Russell Coight moment of our trip thus far....Continue reading
