23.01.2022 Dear friends of Nurtured Birth, please show your support for woman who are birthing in hospitals to have their chosen doula present to support them through. Doula‘s are not visitors we are professional care providers. For some woman my support is crucial continuity of care that she has taken the time to research and engage. Each woman has their own unique story of why they need this more intimate support. I have been doing this now for 10 years, hundreds of births and I ca...n honestly say I would not be doing this if it was not crucial. It is a crazy year for everyone and my birth support has had to shape shift and adapt however it’s time! I encourage you to please listen to the voices of women who have experienced having a doula present at their birth. My husband and I could not have had the successful birth we had without the support of a doula. Their impact of their expertise and presence during childbirth cannot be underestimated. They provide psychological reassurance, information, expertise and nurturing at one of the most critical times in a woman's (and her partner's lives). They can mean the difference in birthing outcomes ie- the difference between an emergency c-section and a natural birth. They can also have lasting impacts on a healthy psychological recovery-being the difference between post natal depression and a mother who is psychologically robust post partum who is ready to nurture a new born. Please let doulas be there-speaking from experience having had an emergency C section (without a doula) the first time and then a natural (non traumatic birth) birth with the presence of my doula. L PLEASE SHARE THIS POST. Thank you http://chng.it/SfkPpXnFd6

22.01.2022 Do you have a pregnancy pillow? Pregnancy puts a lot of strain on your muscles and ligaments and this is often concentrated in your lower back. Sleeping on your side in later pregnancy can also exacerbate back pain if you don’t use support. Your neck, back, and hips should be aligned to support the natural curve in your spine, which is where a pillow can help. When you place the pillow between your knees, your body position is aligne...d and relieves the pressure from your back. Nurtured Birth has been recommending Dentons Pregnancy Pillow for over 10 years to clients who want to get a better night’s sleep and support. The Dentons Pregnancy Pillow has been expertly designed to support the weight of your growing baby and uterus. It is easily wedged under your belly to relieve the pressure on your muscles and spine, allowing you to rest and sleep more comfortably. You can order the Dentons Pregnancy Pillow through Nurtured Birth’s shop https://nurturedbirth.com.au/prod/dentons-pregnancy-pillow/ See more

22.01.2022 . How divine is this precious time spent with baba skin to skin. There is show much evidence that skin-to-skin contact after the birth assists babies and their mothers in so many ways. Calms and relaxes both mother and baby. .... Regulates the baby’s heart rate and breathing, helping them to better adapt to life outside the womb. . Stimulates digestion and an interest in feeding. . Regulates temperature Enables colonisation of the baby’s skin with the mother’s friendly bacteria, thus providing protection against infection Stimulates the release of hormones to support breastfeeding and mothering. Additional benefits for babies in the neonatal unit. . Improves oxygen saturation Reduces cortisol (stress) levels particularly following painful procedures Encourages pre-feeding behaviour. . Assists with growth. . improve milk volume. . Perfect way to bond with other parent and siblings. Baba releases oxytocin from their head, so when one is cuddling a baby and you start to feel super relaxed. 22.01.2022 Exquisite capture by @katekennedybirthphotography . Birth support means - To be in the glorious potent presence of a birthing woman holding the space for the woman to navigate the opening of her body and soul .. to comfort, sooth, trust... encourage, meditate, dance, breath , massage, gently guide to stay on track.. Simply to witness and normalise a healthy labour. Also support her and her partner when there are true medical needs, asking questions helping them to underst...and all their options so they can make informed choices. Birth support, a doula provides continuity of care which research has shown improves birth outcomes. . Doula’s celebrate you, cry with you laugh with you and can be still with you. 21.01.2022 "Birth is the primal transmission event for oxytocin and loving connection. Pregnant and birthing women, especially those who have a yearning for normal physiological birth, are challenged to be protectors of this primal oxytocin transmission. Their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are calling them."- Rhea Dempsey @rheadempseybirth What does this even mean? Oxytocin is one of the principal hormones released from the br...ain during labour and birth. It travels through the blood and attaches to the receptors around the uterus, causing the tightenings (contractions) to occur. This cycle continues to occur when oxytocin is uninhibited. The purpose of the action stretches the cervix, thinning it out and ultimately dilating the cervix to 10cm. The other intelligent quality of oxytocin is more commonly known as the happy or love hormone. In the purpose of childbirth, it is ever-present to help the birthing mother feel connected and loving towards the new baby. When a labouring woman feels safe and loved up during her birth, we know that it supports oxytocin release abundantly. Learn more about oxytocin in Rhea's amazing books "Birth with Confidence" and "Beyond the Birth Plan" available via the shop link in our bio or directly here: https://nurturedbirth.com.au/products/ See more

19.01.2022 We can change our world for the better, not through the use of force, but by developing inner peace. It may feel like a huge task, but peace must be created by ...humanity, who are a collection of individuals. If one person creates inner peace within themselves and shares it with ten other people and each of them does the same we can imagine influencing all 7 billion human beings. Let that be our #PeaceDayChallenge See more

14.01.2022 Whilst I am hearing so much about the anticipation of this miracle vaccine that will put the world back on track, I am not hearing enough encouragement and research about how we can support our health naturally and with supplements. My son and I have been really focused on using this time to building our immune systems improving our vitality and general health through diet, supplements, rest, exercise, meditation and sunshine. Ive never felt better and stronger. I feel frus...trated that naturopathy is no longer included in private health cover as it goes to show that its not as valued in our society. This is a grand error ... one that needs desperate review and change. Whilst in my bubble regardless of societies values I look for this information on my own, Im just disappointed that there is more noise about the vaccine that is not even ready and not enough noise around how to be stronger fitter healthier. Research from around the world is showing that vitamin D can play an essential role in both building immunity to the virus in the first place and also reducing the impact of the disease on those who do fall ill, Prof Brighthope said. 12.01.2022 Sore nipples are one of the more common concerns new mamas face when beginning their breastfeeding journey. Breastfeeding is a wonderful, natural way for a mother to bond with her baby, and breast milk is recommended as the only source of food for a baby’s first six months of life. Whilst the production of breast milk occurs naturally, the art of breastfeeding doesn’t always go as smoothly ... For many mothers, the experience is simple and straightforward, but for some, it can become a painful ordeal. Remember, breastfeeding is a learned skill for both mother and baby, and there are bound to be some hiccups at the beginning. Sore nipples are often dismissed as part of the process but pain definitely isn’t something new mamas should ‘put up with’. Sore nipples can be so painful that a mother gives up breastfeeding altogether. Find out more about what you need to know about sore nipples and breastfeeding, and what we recommend for prevention and support on our blog Shop breastfeeding support tools including books, nipple cups and these wonderful BodyICE Woman Breast Pads in the Nurtured Birth Shop or by visiting link in our Instagram bio or head to this link: https://nurturedbirth.com.au/products/ See more

09.01.2022 Are you and your partner preparing to conceive your baby? We are back with a few more tips on how you can best prepare your mind and body for pregnancy and beyond. Prepare for pregnancy by chilling... You might not think your emotional and mental health is related to your fertility. After all, what your brain is doing shouldn’t affect sperm meeting egg, should it? We all experience stress and emotional upheavals. Low levels of stress occasionally are normal, we adapt and move on. It’s when we’re going through persistent high levels of stress we start to see the effects, both physically and emotionally. This can also affect fertility, as your body produces stress hormones which impact reproduction, such as interrupting your cycle and decreasing sperm quality. Prepare for pregnancy with exercise How your body functions before you conceive can impact how your body copes with the changes that pregnancy and birth brings. Quit smoking, alcohol & social drugs We’re not here to judge but smoking, drinking alcohol, and taking drugs are the most problematic habits for overall health, fertility and pregnancy. All of these substances can make it much more difficult to get pregnant and significantly increase the risk of miscarriage, birth defects and stillbirth. Reduce caffeine & caffeinated drinks/foods High intake of caffeine may interfere with your ability to conceive, increase the risk of miscarriage, and of having a baby with low birth weight. It’s best to limit your intake of caffeine to 300mg a day or avoid it as much as possible. If you would like to read the rest of our preparing for pregnancy tips, head to our blog and read: EASY WAYS YOU CAN PREPARE FOR PREGNANCY NOW or follow the link directly here: https://nurturedbirth.com.au/easy-ways-you-can-prepare-for/ See more

05.01.2022 PREGNANCY OSTEOPATHY APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE There are so many changes during pregnancy- physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Treating conditions as they arise helps your body to accommodate the many rapidly occurring changes at this time. The changes to your body in pregnancy are often obvious, such as normal weight gain and shifts in your posture. Other changes may be more subtle but dramatic, changing the normal structure, function, and... motion of your body. New aches and pains can arise and pre-existing conditions can worsen. This can lead to you not feeling your best during pregnancy . Pregnancy osteopathy treatment aims to ensure your body is aligned and you aren’t experiencing pain that can cause tension. This helps to promote wellbeing during pregnancy, but it also has a positive effect on your labour and birth as well. Nurtured Birth’s practitioners work collaboratively so you can be assured your osteopathic treatment will be supported by other therapies. Some of our practitioners have participated in Spinning Babies training to enhance your body alignment and improve optimal fetal positioning. Osteopathic care in pregnancy is safe, effective and encouraged to prevent and treat issues, such as: Lower back, hip, pelvic pain Sciatica and nerve pain Optimising the baby’s position in preparation for labour Breech and posterior babies Pelvic instability and symphysis pubis dysfunction Rib and upper back strain Maintenance of postural balance and alignment Groin and/or hip pain Carpal tunnel syndrome Swelling, particularly hands and feet Preexisting injuries that are exacerbated by pregnancy. SILVERETTE are small cups crafted out of 925 silver that is designed to fit over and help protect nipples between breastfeeds or also soreness from pumping. .... Silver is a natural antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial metal that also contains anti-inflammatory agents that has proven to heal, prevent and alleviate cuts, wounds, soreness, blisters and infections from the result of breastfeeding or pumping. They are designed to repair your skin in between the feeds. They are the only and original nursing cups made in Italy by fully licensed silversmiths. . One of my doula clients shared her experience: Every breast feeding mumma needs these in their life. After 3 days of a split nipple, a tonne of different creams and almost giving up on breastfeeding all together I gave these a go and will never look back. Highly recommend adding to the hospital bag list, your nipples will thank you for it! . Since 2002, SILVERETTE cups have globally been recognised as the breastfeeding and pumping companion amongst the community of new mothers, doctors and lactation consultants helping and supporting the breastfeeding journey. 03.01.2022 Dear friends, past, present doula clients, please support my doula work by signing this petition to allow my clients and other mother’s to have their chosen care present at their birth in hospitals. I am not a visitor, I’m a professional ESSENTIAL care provider. For some woman my support is crucial continuity of care that she has taken the time to research and engage. Each woman has their own unique story of why they need this more intimate support. I have been doing this now for 10 years hundreds of births and I can honestly say I would not be doing this if it was not crucial. It is a crazy year for everyone and my birth support has had to shape shift and adapt however it’s time! http://chng.it/SfkPpXnFd6

03.01.2022 Sarah has been busy holding space for the Nurtured Birth team during Covid. Now everything is settling down, she has opened up some spaces in the clinic! Whether you are interested in a relaxing massage or private birth education, if you would like a session with her jump online to book via the link in our bio Debbie says: "I’ve been lucky enough to use Nurtured Birth for induction and postnatal massages in two of my pregnancies but ...this time, with the Covid restrictions, that service was unavailable. I realised leading up to the birth of my fourth baby I was facing some challenges and fears that were causing anxiety and potentially preventing labour. I touched on my need for a ‘pep talk’ when trying to book a massage and Sarah suggested birth coaching. On the video call, Sarah actively listened, quickly identified what was important to me, and talked me through how best to address each of my key concerns. Sarah empowered me in a way I’d never experienced before despite reading several well known positive birth books and attending hypnobirthing and calm birthing courses over the years. She gave me personalised advice that took my personality and previous experiences into consideration without making me feel judged or pushed towards a particular way of thinking. Together we wrote a birth plan that addressed needs that had not been met in my previous labours in a way that encouraged a positive and constructive relationship with my care givers. Sarah also equipped me with coping mechanisms were invaluable on the day. I ended the call feeling strong, calm and excited to meet our baby. Sarah is warm, empathetic, open-minded and holistic in her approach. When talking to Sarah what comes across most is her passion and desire for women and their partners to have the positive birth they desire. Birth is a unique and magical experience that stays with you for life and a session with Sarah is such a worthwhile investment." See more

She was drawn to offer nurturing support that encompassed not just the birthing experience, b...ut the before and after as well Doula and postpartum doula support has come a long way from being something only ‘crunchy mamas’ used. After their baby has arrived, many mothers are unprepared for the shock of parenting in today’s culture. This week on the Nurtured Birth blog we are sharing with you information about what a doula is, and the benefits of having a birth and postnatal doula in your birth team.
