25.01.2022 It's Child Protection Week! The message is a simple one: "Play Your Part". If you know a child or family who needs support or assistance, play your part to help them out if you can. Or call for help if you are really worried about them.... Protecting children is everybody's business . . . . #childprotectionweek #ncpw20 #playyourpart #napcan #playtherapy #playtherapist #childcounselling #childpsychology #keepchildrensafe #childprotection

19.01.2022 Anxiety shows up differently for different people, but all who experience anxiety know its 'likes' and 'dislikes' all too well. For children, it can be so hard to explain to others why they feel/behave the way they do in certain situations and the behaviours can be easily misinterpreted. It's important to make sure we give kids with anxiety options which make them feel safe and secure as well as opportunities to try new ways to work through situations where they might experie...nce anxiety. The play room offers a natural way of supporting these children to explore and better understand their anxiety through play and be able to cope more effectively with the symptoms. Thanks to @worrywellbeing for the graphic! . . . #playtherapy #childcounselling #playtherapist #anxiety #childrensanxiety #anxietysupport #playisamazing

17.01.2022 Many parents tell me about times they've "lost it" with their kids and how terrible they feel about it. It's part of being a parent and, dare I say it, human! We all lose it sometimes - but the most important thing is what happens afterward, the Repair. Repair is an important part of all relationships, including the parent-child relationship. It's ok to apologise to your child, in fact, it's necessary. It's also great role-modelling, sometimes children need to see you're le...arning too! Thanks to @drbeckyathome for the graphic! . . . . #parenting #repair #relationship #playtherapy #childrenscounselling #childrenstherapy #parentsupport

17.01.2022 There's more to say after 'R U OK?' It can be difficult to initiate a conversation with someone you're worried about. It can be even harder to know what to do or say when they tell you they're not ok. RUOK.org.au have some great resources to help you feel more confident to have the conversation and be able to better support the person.... If you are not ok, today or anyday, you can always contact Lifeline on 13 11 14. . . . #ruokday #ruok #worldsuicidepreventionday #lifeline #itsoknottobeok #helpingeachother #theresmoretosayafterruok

16.01.2022 It's helpful to understand an anger response from a child (or adult!) is generally a mask for many other underlying emotions. When we recognise the surface anger as deeper hurt, fear or embarrassment, we might respond in a more measured, gentle and empathic way.

13.01.2022 A beautiful "office warming" gift of flowers looks perfect in reception #blessed #foreverflowers

13.01.2022 Happy Speech Pathology Week to all you amazing practioners who do so much to support people with their communication. The focus this year is on "communicating with confidence" which is so important for a lot of the children we see in our practice. Speech Therapy helps many of the little people we see to develop the confidence to express themselves, which lowers their frustration levels and their anxiety. We would be lost without our wonderful Speechies ... #SPweek #speechtherapy #playtherapist #playtherapy #communicatingwithconfidence

10.01.2022 Lest we forget

06.01.2022 Some great advice from Janet Lansbury about managing big emotions in our little people! The concept of staying with children to help them regulate can be challenging for parents, but it's so important in helping children to learn how to deal with their big feelings. We want so much for children to feel better and the best way to do this is to let them feel and experience their emotion while knowing you are right there for them when they need you.

04.01.2022 "Happy Together" ... our newest addition and generous office-warming gift! This resonated for me in thinking about the nature of the therapeutic relationship, particularly in using play to connect with children. While therapy isn't always easy and happy, we strive for it to be within a safe, attuned and nurturing relationship for children and their families.... #playtherapy #play #mareedavidsonart #therapeuticrelationship #connections #connectionthroughplay #childtherapy

03.01.2022 The power of projection in play.... even though I know she has a torch in her hand, I almost always see a coffee cup!! In play therapy, kids attach their own meaning to the toys in the room, which is what makes this type of therapy so poweful. They are actually re-creating their own world using the toys so I can see it exactly the way they do. #playtherapy #playtherapist #coffeeislife #nurturingsupportpsychology #play

03.01.2022 "Kids do well if they can" (Ross Greene) When we look at children's behaviours differently, we see the situation differently and can respond in a way that is more effective and can better support the child. Changing our perspective from "they won't" to "they can't" helps us to see the child's needs more clearly.

01.01.2022 Some interesting information to keep in mind!

01.01.2022 During Child Protection Week, we are reminded it does indeed take a villiage to raise a child. It's up to all of us to play our part in ensuring the children in our lives are safe and cared for, loved and nurtured. . .... . . #childprotectionweek #playyourpart #ncpw20 #playtherapy #playtherapist #childcounselling #nurturingsupportpsychology
