24.01.2022 Are you getting enough fruit and veggies in your diet? Chances are you're not! In 201415, 50% of adults and 68% of children ate sufficient serves of fruit, and 7% of adults and 5% of children ate sufficient serves of vegetables.... We know that consuming a plant-based diet rich in whole-grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes is best for our overall health! Eating a plant-based diet does not mean that you have to ditch the animal foods. Instead, focus on building a meal around plant-based foods and have the meat or dairy products as small additional aspects of your meal. Here are our top tips to help meet your daily targets! Aim for 2 serves of fruit per day (1 medium piece of fruit or 2 small pieces) Aim for 5+ serves of vegetables (1/2 cup cooked vegetables or 1 cup of salad) Include 1/2 cup of cooked legumes such as chickpeas, peas or beans daily Fill half your plate with a variety of vegetables or salad at main meals Enjoy vegetable sticks with hummus, salsa or guacamole as a snack Add a handful of spinach to smoothies Include serves of healthful fats such as olive oil, nuts and avocado. Add seeds to the top of your salad or on top of a soup. Cook a vegetarian meal at least twice a week like a tofu stir-fry or lentil curry or vegetable burgers. Include whole grains throughout the day. Enjoy oatmeal for breakfast, quinoa or pearl barley added to a salad, brown rice, or wholemeal pasta with dinner. 14.01.2022 Ever heard the saying focus on progress not perfection? This certainly rings true when it comes to your eating and exercise habits. Too often we see clients give up, beat themselves up or lose motivation because their goal of eating perfectly is unattainable or unrealistic. ... No human being is capable of eating perfectly 100% of the time so if this is your goal you are very quickly going to fall short and feel like a failure. Focus on eating nourishing foods 80% of the time and leave yourself a 20% allowance to simply eating foods because you love them, because the occasion calls for it or because you simply want to! Instead of beating yourself for what you've eaten on Sunday night and promising yourself you will 'start again' tomorrow set yourself one small realistic goal for the week. This small habit changes will add up to big sustainable changes over time! Remember to be compassionate to yourself, you are doing your best! Tell us below what ONE goal is you have set yourself for the week? Dietitian Nicky's is to go for four walks this week. See more
