26.01.2022 Let’s clear one thing up. WHOLEGRAINS ARE NOT BAD FOR YOUR GUT. I didn’t realise how far this rumour had spread until last week when I was presenting at a medic...al conference. ... When unqualified people share inappropriate gut health messages it doesn’t really bother me because I hope you guys are savvy enough to see through it. But, when these rumours make their way into medical conferences, that’s when I’m compelled (and professionally obligated) to speak up. .... So what happened? One of the other speakers stated she was working with a nutrition therapist who had developed a gut boosting diet. She then proceeded to explain that the diet eliminated ALL grains because they were inflammatory. WTF?! .... WHOLEGRAINS ARE NOT INFLAMMATORY! All of the evidence in human studies suggests that wholegrains support good gut health (lower risk of colon cancer, help feed beneficial microbes etc.). In fact one study containing hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated that fibre from grains was more protective against some cancers than fibres from vegetables and fruit. Now, this is not to say one source is healthier than another but excluding whole food groups can have unexpected consequences. ... ARE GRAINS EVER BAD? Eating grains raw (not sure who would do that) is not good for your gut (some contain heat sensitive lectins & other compounds) and if you’re coeliac or gluten intolerant, avoiding gluten containing grains is important. But that’s basically it. .... If you hear anyone making broad sweeping claims that wholegrains trigger gut inflammation and are bad for gut health, please speak up or send them my way. I will never be one to call people out or embarrass them but it’s important to have evidence-based debates with those promoting poor science. .... And yes, in case you were wondering during question time I did politely set the record straight about wholegrains #NotOnMyWatch @reneedm See more

25.01.2022 Do you know what doesn’t make me smile? The fact that 57% of you (or someone you know) have been taken advantage of and paid for an invalid (IgG) food intoleran...ce test. It’s not just the money, but it’s actually impacting peoples’ health. I’m seeing more and more people in clinic afraid to eat because of these scam tests. . Now I’m aware this may be a little confronting for some so I’ve teamed up with immune system expert @dr_jenna_macciochi to help separate the facts from this pseudoscience i.e. fake science. . FOOD ALLERGY vs. INTOLERANCE: It’s important to be aware of the difference between these two, because unlike food intolerances, there are VALID food allergies tests, one which includes an IgE blood test. Food allergies can also be life threatening so definitely see your GP if you suspect this. .. THE FAKE SCEINCE: The IgG test looks for specific IgG antibodies to foodstuff in the blood, claiming that a positive result indicates diagnosis of a food intolerance. They typically involve long lists of foods which seem to always include wheat, dairy and other sources of FODMAPs. This long list and inclusion of FODMAPs may explain why some people report feeling better after implementing the IgG test results I.e. it’s a chance finding! . THE REAL SCIENCE: Most of us will develop IgG antibodies to food during our lifetime. It is an indicator of repeated exposure, not clinical symptoms. This is because IgG is a marker for food tolerance: an indicator that our immune system recognises the food to be harmless and does not respond to it. IgG antibodies to a food may therefore be protective in preventing inappropriate immune responses by diverting the immune system away from IgE (i.e. the allergy type of response). . TAKE HOME: 1IgG tests lack both scientific rationale and clinical evidence for diagnosing a food intolerance. 2IgG tests should not be confused with valid IgE allergy testing. 3Other than breath tests for lactose intolerance, there is currently no valid test for food intolerance. 4Current gold standard for diagnosing a food intolerance involves restricting the suspected food, followed by reintroduction. Unfortunately it’s often not that straight forward so best to see a specialist dietitian to help guide you through the process. ...
