25.01.2022 Gut Biome and Vegetables Modern diet destroys our gut health and causes damage for future generations. There is even a field of study - Nutrigenomics - that looks at food nutrients and gene expression. Serious responsibility we have here. Our modern diet consists of processed low fibre foods, chemicals and denatured ingredients. And all of these can be found in every aisle of our supermarkets. Stay away and save yourselves?! Not such a bad idea. But even better, be nutritiona...lly educated in what to buy in your supermarket and who knows, maybe one day our supermarket foods won't be the reason for our decline in health. They are only selling what we want to buy so we can't pass the blame. But we can learn to be nutritionally responsible shoppers. Some symptoms of compromised gut health include constipation, too much (or too little) intestinal gas, diarrhea, chronic bad breath, hormonal issues, menstrual problems, allergies, just to name a few. Sadly, some of us live with these symptoms as our daily companion; hoping the doctors will fix us. Let's try to do something ourselves. How wonderful and empowering; to be rid of symptoms just by changing what goes in our mouth. The main reason, our modern low fibre diets are harmful, is all about fibre. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed as much as 10 times more fibre than we do today. Fibre, in our veg, can not be digested by our body. This same fibre is the top food source for our helpful gut bacteria. We need good gut bacteria to build an immune system and body tissues. Veggies. Veggies. Veggies. That's where loads of fibre is. Put veggies on your plate, a cupful at a time and do it at breakfast, lunch and dinner time. Other ways to make a difference to your gut biome --- 1. limit your use of antibiotics (find natural alternatives) 2. increase probiotic rich foods 3. BREASTFEED YOUR BABY 4. correct poor oral health issues These alone will dramatically improve your gut health (and your breastfed baby's) and quality of life. Nourishing regards, CrissyC See more

Protection against cold and flu symptoms. The pack contains 2 products. One with Echinacea, the other with Elderberry + Vit C + zinc. Stay warm and dry.

10.01.2022 An interesting article I have just read in the magazine 'Wise Traditions in food, farming and the healing arts, vol 16 number 3'. GUT FLORA AND MOOD Several studies during the last decade have shown the relationship between the gut flora, stress and anxiety-like behaviour. The findings clearly suggest that changing the gut flora can affect behaviour. Suggesting also that the microbial colonisation of the gut during a critical window in early life shapes adult behaviour. Givin...g probiotic fermented dairy drinks to healthy female participants caused changes in brain activity. All this fascinating research adds up to the conclusion that anything that interferes with the microbial colonisation process early on can set the scene for trouble down the road, and the robust and healthy gut flora can determine depression free moods throughout life. Maternal stress, infections, antibiotic use in the mother and cesarean birth can jeopardise the baby's disposition and even mental health throughout life. In fact, researchers at Ohio State University found that toddlers with the most genetically diverse types of bacteria in the gut more frequently exhibited positive mood, curiosity, sociability and impulsivity. Lack of microbiome diversity is associated with greater indications of stress, such as tantrums. (page 16 of magazine) My thoughts on this are - wouldn't it be fabulous if we fed our babies more lacto-fermented food instead of physical punishment or time out for bad behaviour. Certainly worth consideration. See more
08.01.2022 Age Spots ..... While visiting my doctor for my regular skin check, I asked what the larger than usual brown spot/area was on my leg. An 'age spot', he tells me. Ageing hey. Something we are supposed to just accept without a thought. Not me. I need to know more than this. To my book cave, I go! Age spots are flat brown spots/areas that can appear anywhere on the body as it ages. Can be referred to as liver spots. That's where I start saying, 'ok now we are getting somewhere'.... Why is it a liver spot also? Because it is a sign of our bodies not functioning in top condition, that's why. Not just because of ageing. It is actually possible to continue to boost and support our bodies through the ageing process rather than just accept there is nothing we can do. Age/liver spots are the result of a buildup of waste, caused by free radical damage in the skin cells. The cells are so full of this waste they are destroying the body's cells. Age spots are a surface warning of the free radical intoxification of the body. This will eventually work its way down to deeper levels of the internal structures such as heart muscle, retina, brain and liver cells. Good news is we can support our body through the ageing process gracefully with nutritional support. Loads of fresh organic veg (all different colours) and by loads, I mean several cups per day. Vegetables are a power house of antioxidants which destroy the free radicals that make us age quickly. Supplements to consider for antioxidant and anti-ageing are vitamin C, A, E. Others to consider - milk thistle, burdock, ginkgo biloba, ginseng and green tea, resveratrol, grapeseed, turmeric, just to name a few. I started taking an antioxidant supplement in my 40's but I wish I had of known then what I know now; as I would have ideally like to have started in my mid 30's. Mainly due to the less than clean environments we live in today. Here's to ageing gracefully and remember - 'a healthy outside starts from the inside'. Nourishing regards, CrissyC. See more
07.01.2022 My food for thought post for today ..... Just reading about B vitamins and how important they are for so many body functions and how deficient most of our western population is and why this is so. I am interested in how often B6 comes up. For me in particular, as I use this vitamin for wrist pain. Doctors may diagnose Carpel Tunnel syndrome, if I actually visited one. But the interesting thing while reading, was how important this vitamin was. Deficiencies of B6 have been lin...ked with diabetes, heart disease, nervous disorders, carpel tunnel, PMS, morning sickness, kidney failure, alcoholism, asthma, sickle cell anaemia and cancer. Research apparently is revealing that even sub normal levels of B6 can diminish the chances of conception. And sadly the birth control pill that many young women are taking or have been taking, diminishes the amount of available B6. So that women who discontinue the pill often cannot conceive until a lengthy period after cessation. Makes one wonder about contraception and could it be better to find another way. Ask our mothers what they did when there was no birth control pill. Could there be another way for you? Well I know there is for me and I have used one of these methods myself for many years now. The number of women unable to conceive is becoming alarming! So anyway, these are just my thoughts and I would like to add what foods contain these important B vitamins - whole grains, veg, fruit, many protein foods just to name a few and keep it simple. 06.01.2022 Stress and Inmmunity Communication pathways link our nervous, endocrine and immune systems. Our thoughts, feelings, moods and even our beliefs, influence our level of health and the course of disease. For example, cortisol, a hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex in association with the stress response, inhibits the activity of our immune system. When our work load piles up, our healthy habits can suffer and therefore have a direct impact on our immune system. We may smoke o...r drink alcohol or eat 'comfort' foods when stressed; habits which are detrimental to optimal immune function. Under stress, we are generally less likely to eat well or exercise regularly; two habits that enhance immunity. Adequate sleep and relaxation are especially important for a healthy immune system. But when there aren't enough hours in the day, we may be tempted to steal some from the night. While skipping sleep may give us a few more hours of productive time in the short run, in the long run we end up even further behind as lack of sleep impairs our ability to be our best. Take time out now for yourself on a daily basis. 10 minutes, or 30 or whatever you can give but make it daily. Take a walk in a bush or park or your back yard; take off your shoes and connect with the earth; take a few deep steady breaths; grab a fishing rod and go fishing (this pass time has got to be the ultimate stress reduction healthy habit). Forget the internet and be sure to leave your mobile in the car or at home. Simple little changes daily make the world of difference to our immune system. Let's think about the simple pleasures in life; without techno-stimulation. Kind and nourishing regards CrissyC See more
06.01.2022 Hormones Gone Haywire? When it comes to hormonal ups and downs, it's the Gang of Four generally mentioned. Menopause, Perimenopause, Pregnancy, Adolescence. But, in fact, hormones are quite often knocked off balance by stress. Consider your hormones as being like text messages from your brain, thyroid or adrenal glands that travel via your bloodstream to every cell in your body, providing instructions on what to do next, how and what to think, move, digest, react, remember, e...xcrete, everything. Adrenalin and cortisol are your body's two key stress hormones and are closely linked. If one rises, the other follows suit. Adrenalin provides a short term stress response and then quickly drops, while cortisol remains active and sustained for longer. Hormonal imbalance can cause adrenal fatigue, as well as exacerbating anxiety we may already be feeling. The more of these stress responses we have during a day of work, the more we become sensitive to stress. Resulting in constant stress about pretty much everything in our day. And if that's not enough, an oversupply of cortisol and adrenaline is linked to a slew of maladies, including PMS, fatigue, insomnia, osteoporosis, heart disease, low libido, compromised fertility, weight gain, blood sugar issues and more. Talk to me about the health of your hormones and their impact on your everyday health and future quality of life. Warm and Nourishing regards CrissyC See more
