16.01.2022 Nyanda Cultural Tours is an enterprise that was a long time in the making. Launching in 2017, they offer Aboriginal cultural experiences in and around Brisbane..., such as their Nudgee Waterhole tour. Madonna Thomson is the Director and she says Nyanda was born from our desire to share our Yagara language, connections, knowledge and context of who we are as part of the broader Gurri (Gurrangnam) Society. Madonnas family have spent more than a decade contributing to the upgrade and maintenance of the Nudgee Bora. This location is part of Madonnas culture and history. She feels that sharing this place with the wider community will raise awareness of its importance and the need to protect and preserve it into the future. In our tours we share a lot of traditional knowledge of the environment and how we used it, including native plant and animals Madonna says. Nyanda use tourism as a vehicle for education and sharing to help inform the community about the uniqueness of Aboriginal culture. Since the start Nyanda have educated over 1000 school students, undertaken 50 visitor experiences and 10 corporate bookings. However, COVID put a halt to their tourism business at a time when Nyanda was growing. COVID has forced them to look at alternative ways of engaging participation in their tours. With restrictions on how people can interact during tours, and additional costs for things such as hand sanitiser and individual packaging of food have made it difficult. Having an alternative income stream has kept them going, but soon Nyanda will be releasing two new cultural experiences in Brisbane. Madonna says, The recent relaxation of COVID restrictions is great, as we are now starting to get visitor and corporate tour bookings. We know that it will be some time before schools will return. If you would like to book an experience for your school, business or social group why not contact Nyanda via their website www.nyandaculturaltours.com.au Thanks for taking the time to read about another fantastic Indigenous business. If you need business support during COVID please contact our HOTLINE (07) 3063 4767 Mon-Fri 7am-7pm. #IndigenousBusiness #OpenForBusiness #MicroStoriesOfIndigenousBusiness #MicroStories #100Stories #TradingBlak #SupportSmall #MakingItForQueensland #QueenslandBusiness #SmallBusinessQueensland

12.01.2022 A good Yarn about Jan 26 Ahhhh mate, it’s the day Captain Cook discovered Australia Nahhh, it’s not Actually, that was in April in 1770... Oh well, it was when Australia was first discovered by white people then Well no, that was in 1606, and you know there were people here for thousands of years before? Yeah, but it’s when we became a nation, we became Australia Sorry, no that was 1st of January 1901, and there were many First Nations here long before Well mate, it’s a bloody tradition alright, let me have my beers, beach, and barbie Well it’s actually only been a national holiday since 1994, even though in 1938 it was declared a day of mourning. What does it represent then? Well, it’s when convicts came over and the British Flag was raised in Warrane (Sydney Cove). It’s a National Day of Mourning for the First Nations people of this land. A day that marks the beginning of massacres, genocide, dispossession, Frontier Wars....You’d think a nation with such rich cultural history could recognise and respect their First Nations people, and at the very least, Change the Date.....? #sharedpost #alwayswasalwayswillbe #invasionday #survivalday #dayofmourning #firstnations #aboriginal #torresstraitislander #australia

10.01.2022 #Repost @abcindigenous with @trentwhite_photo Darumbal and Yiman man Trent White picked up a camera to help First Nations clans preserve their cultures one photo at a time. . Unsatisfied with life in the mining industry, the 37-year-old made the decision to return to Darumbal, his traditional country in central Queensland.... . "I started getting really involved in a lot of culture here, back home, because we were losing elders pretty quickly in my family and there was no-one really taking on that role," he said. . Mr White spent countless hours learning from elders. He now speaks at schools, hosts programs, and sings in language. . But the father of three was always interested in photography. . Turning it into a career seemed unrealistic until he viewed it as another way to educate people and preserve culture. . "I would go over to families' houses, or anyone of Aboriginal heritage, and you'd go into their house, you'd look at the family photos, and you'd see them dressed up in nice clothes," he said. . "I always used to think, 'how come we're not getting photographed with who we are and what we represent?' and that was something I wanted to change. . Mr White first photographed Darumbal and Torres Strait Islander woman Kayleen Adidi only eight months into owning a camera. . When Ms Adidi saw her photos for the first time she said she was overcome with pride. . "It's empowering. It's given me confidence, not only as a woman, but an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander woman," she said. . "It makes me proud showing my family, showing community. . "Not only that, passing it down to the little people, it's really important, because we want them to be proud of who they are and where they come from." . Read the story, link in bio . 09.01.2022 WEEDS ARE A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE Growing up my mum always would stop and pick leafy plants for me to eat. It is some of my most loving memories, where Mum would share her aboriginal knowledge of the beneficial herbs and leafy greens that grow all around us. As part of my returning to my Mothers Lore, I have also chosen to learn about the introduced leafy greens and herbs (weeds) growing all around me. It is has been a deeply grounding and enriching experience that I wan...t to share. *Native bitter cress is a beneficial weed that is a member of the mustard family. It is a hot peppery edible with vitamin C, calcium, vitamin E and vitamin K. I picked this from a flowing creek in an outer suburb of Brisbane. . . . #aboriginal #aboriginalaustralia #aboriginalculture #indigenousculture #indigenousaustralia #culturaltourism #tourguide #walkingtour #indigenouspeople #nativefoods #bushfoods #bushtucker #queensland #visitqueensland #brisbanefood #brisbanefoodie #brisbane #brisbanephotography #brisbanetourism #visitbrisbane #thisisbrisbane #igersbrisbane #whatsonbrisbane #mybrisbane #explorebrisbane #thingstodoinbrisbane #traditionalknowledge #nativeedibles #edibleweeds @ Upper Brookfield, Queensland, Australia

06.01.2022 #Repost @curriecountry with @make_repost What time is it ?? The first appearance of the celestial emu starts April-May image (A) and indicated the emus were starting to pair up When it was horizontal in the sky June image (B) indicated the eggs were in the nest and ready to harvest When the celestial emu starts to dip head down in July (C), it was an indication is too late to harvest as the eggs now have chicks... In SE QLD the direct alignment of the emu vertical to the horizon is also iniation time or male ceremony time. Why ?? Male emu take care of the eggs during the 60 day incubation period and he is the sole parent for up to two years after the eggs hatch. The iniation ceremony represents the lifecycle and potency of eggs (sperm) the relationship to responsibility, to the young, and the connection to a cycle far greater than time. Father Emu is honoured revered + an indication of life cycles...this is the star lore learning What time is it ?? Time to learn more about Aboriginal cultural astronomy The world first astronomers- #Indigenousvalues #Starlores #olderthantime #culturalastronomy #curriecountry Also... The emu feather is significant to QLD mobs and used in ceremony + battle, by men + women + worn in the Frontier Wars.. It was then appropriated by QLD soldiers to differentiate themselves from VIC + NSW soldiers and then collectively used by Australia soldiers to diffeientae themselves in WWI + beyond. Fisrt seen in Queensland Mounted Infantry during the great shearers' strike in Queensland in 1891, now a part of Australian military personality. #Indigenousvalues #Indigenousexcellence #Indigenouscontribution #curriecountry #Indigenousknowledges @ Moggill, Queensland, Australia
