19.01.2022 Zakat is the third pillar of our faith, but do you know WHO is eligible to actually pay Zakat? Generally, most Muslim jurists agree that Zakat is obligatory on Muslims who are: 1. Mature (i.e. reached the age of puberty) 2. Sane 3. Free (i.e. not captives)... 4. Owning the prescribed Nisab amount However, there is disagreement amongst Muslim jurists on whether or not Zakat is compulsory on the wealth of minors and the insane. A Hadith by Imaam Shafi'i reports the Prophet said: Invest the fund of the orphans so they may not be used up by Zakat. Therefore, the implication is that there is an obligation of Zakat on the wealth of minors and the insane which become the responsibility of their guardians. If the value of all your assets are less than the Nisab value when the date you usually pay your Zakat is due, you don't owe any Zakat.
