06.01.2022 BREAKING: Our Bill to end the practice of sending people to jail for not paying fines has passed the Upper House of State Parliament and is set to become law. I...m proud weve been able to pass this reform. It will end a destructive, wasteful and unfair part of our justice system. Western Australians have been dragged through prisons for situations that simply do not justify it. It meant our prisons were put under pressure, and it cost WA taxpayers considerably more to send people to prison than the fines will ever be worth. Its a system that just never made sense. Our changes will mean that imprisonment for non-payment of fines can only be used as a sanction of last resort, and only on the orders of a Magistrate. But to be clear, these reforms will not mean that people can get away with not paying fines. The reforms also include changes that will facilitate the recovery of these fine debts rather than paying to keep fine defaulters locked up. This includes the introduction of garnishee orders, allowing fines to be collected from salaries or bank accounts, and "work and development permits" for debtors experiencing hardship affecting their ability to pay their fine debts. This will take pressure off our prison system, save taxpayer money and ensure no one is needlessly incarcerated. The previous policy has led to further suffering for Western Australians in poverty, families have been torn apart, and in the well-known and tragic case of Ms Dhu, a young Yamatji woman, her needless death. We know that this policy has disproportionately affected disadvantaged groups in our community. We know that it has disproportionately affected our Aboriginal community in regional and remote WA. Currently, no one wins. It had to end. And now it will.

06.01.2022 Congrats to our dynamic VP for Operations Ms. Elizebeth Lang, youth event coordinator Ms Filda Lotara Okumu and Constable Care for building the capacity of our Youth through Community Cultural Arts. Thanks to our sponsor City of Stirling!

01.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in devastating job losses and unemployment across our community. Training is a crucial step in getting people back to work. Thats why the McGowan Government is investing $57 million in training, including slashing fees for 39 high-priority TAFE courses. Early childhood education and care is among the courses that will have drastically reduced TAFE fees from Semester 2, 2020. ... Weve also announced that a range of short courses will be completely free. Huge increases in TAFE fees under the previous government were a real deterrent for people who wanted to study at TAFE, so were taking action to make TAFE more affordable and get residents back into training and jobs. Our new package to support TAFE and training will make sure that Western Australians can access the courses and training they need to access jobs in key areas. For more info, visit www.jobsandskills.wa.gov.au or contact your local Jobs and Skills Centre on 13 64 64.
