20.01.2022 IMPORTANT. REMEMBRANCE DAY 2020 GOING ONLINE FOR THE FIRST TIME. School children, community groups, and workplaces across the Dubbo region are being encouraged ...to participate in the virtual Remembrance Day ceremony being held online as part of this year’s commemorations. COVID-19 restrictions have meant that ceremonies are limited to just 100 people this year. Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) recognises that this event is incredibly important to the community, and some people will be disappointed they won’t be able to attend in person. Just like Australians did for ANZAC Day this year, the community will need to once again adapt to the challenges of the pandemic to pay their respects. The safety of our community is important, and although there hasn’t been any recent community transmission in the Dubbo region for a considerably long time during this pandemic, we’re still vigilant about the effects of the virus, and in particular, the vulnerable members of our community, Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Councillor Ben Shields said. Invitations have been sent to 100 guests and officials; however, those wishing to participate remotely can join DRC’s live stream on Facebook or online via Council’s website. Students can still lay a wreath in their school grounds, and mark a minute’s silence at 11am, followed by the Last Post. The online version of the ceremony will also have the Parade Commander leading marchers to the Cenotaph, Bill Greenwood will recite the Remembrance Hymn and Jeff Caldbeck will recite ‘In Flanders Fields’ a poem by John McRae, Councillor Shields said. As usual, the Supreme Sacrifice is then played and the official party will lay wreaths. If people are following along from work, home, or school, they can use this time to also lay their own wreaths. While these commemorations are very different to what the community is used to, DRC staff are hopeful the online stream will still allow the community to feel included. For ANZAC Day, we were in the height of the pandemic, and we were still able to commemorate it together in some way. I’m hopeful that we’ll still all come together, just virtually, for Remembrance Day 2020, Councillor Shields said. There will be fencing around the Cenotaph, to ensure Council complies with the strictly imposed government-requirement of 100 people only. We kindly ask that the community keep their distance from each other if they are marking the occasion together. The live stream will commence at 10:45am on Wednesday 11 November 2020, and can be viewed via Dubbo Regional Council’s Facebook page, Twitter, website, and YouTube channel.
