21.01.2022 Growing in the car park of a small shopping centre in an opulent Perth suburb is an old Avocado tree. Some time, 30+ years ago, someone put an avocado seed in the ground and now this wonderful example stands here. Increasingly, people are familiar with what grafted Avocado trees, bought from nursery suppliers look like. But like this beauty, seedling trees are bigger and longer lived. Judging by its large round fruit it's likely a Hass variety or similar. Every season this l...arge, stately tree produces ~1 tonne of high quality, nutritious staple fruit. Seedling trees take a little longer to fruit than their mass produced, grafted siblings but why can't we establish more beautiful feature trees that provide us with staple foods? #oaktreedesigns #regenerativeagriculture #dehesaaustralis #regenaustralis #permaculture #permaculturedesign #sustainability #ethnobotany #dehesa #byronjoel #proanthropism #humanaslamdsteward #stewardship #positivefuture #regenerative #avocado #avocadotree #foodforest See more

19.01.2022 Exquisite old Marris in full bloom on a farm in the Perth hills. This site is a great example of native species being retained to form a savannah dynamic within productive pasture. We will be fencing many of them off and establishing appropriate understory flora to create islands of habitat for small fauna. This will not only look beautiful but will also foster the health of the established trees. #oaktreedesigns #regenerativeagriculture #dehesaaustralis #regenaustralis #permaculture #permaculturedesign #sustainability #ethnobotany #dehesa #byronjoel #proanthropism #stewardship #positivefuture #regenerative #oak #rewilding #mediterraneanfood #savannah

19.01.2022 These are the tail feathers of the special of Black Cockatoo (Calyptorynchus genus) that live in south Western Australia. From left to right is a 1: male Red Tail, 2: female Red Tail and 3: White Tail. To find one of these feathers is considered a powerful, fortuitous omen, with the female Red Tails being especially prized. I found all of these in the beautiful Jarrah woods of Dwellingup during one day of an ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE experience with the Mankind Project this weekend. For fostering emotional intelligence, accountability, open heartedness and fierce love in men, I cant recommend the Mankind Project highly enough. #mkp #mkpwa #mankindproject #blackcockatoo

18.01.2022 Last year I was asked to establish a tree nursery for the Witchcliffe Ecovillage. I dug windrows and planted both cuttings and seed of numerous species of deciduous trees. Now its time to root prune them and move some to other beds. In the first picture youll see the tiny stub of a Persian Walnut that was direct seeded. It sprouted, grew and then sat at approximately 2 inches tall, content with its tiny canopy of maybe 5 mature leaves, all growing season. Underground was a... different story. These organisms invest wisely by first establishing robust and deep root systems. Above ground it can appear as if theyre not growing at all for up to 3 seasons. But once they have put their roots down they bound forward. Same with oak and chestnut. Im sure theres some profound life lesson in there somewhere. #oaktreedesigns #trees #walnut #nursery #ecovillages #byronjoel See more

18.01.2022 It’s been nearly 15 years since I last visited the scorched, red lands of Western Australia’s Mid West, Pilbara and Kimberley regions; which is about 14 years longer than I’d hoped. She’s reminding me of my adventures in Morocco and my love for designing human settlement systems in dry lands. The current state of things here are uplifting and heartbreaking in equal measure. Unknowably ancient. ... Unforgivingly harsh. Impossibly beautiful. Medicine Country.

17.01.2022 My friends gifted me a Japanese Hori-hori knife. These tools fill the gap between a knife and a trowel. The blade is slightly curved with one side sharpened like a knife and the other side serrated, with measurements in inches and centimetres marked along its length. Its incredibly robust. Traditional horticultural tools from around the world are making a come back and for good reason. They work. Along with my secateurs, this Hori knife will make up my horticultural Every Day Carry. #edc #everydaycarry #horihoriknife #horihori #oaktreedesigns

12.01.2022 This image shows one of our exciting current projects on a parcel of land in south Western Australia. The clients brief included mixed agricultural production(livestock, tree crops, market gardens), timber forestry, environmental rehabilitation, a restaurant, processing facilities for farm produce, a particular landscape aesthetic and more... With so many variables at play, functional landscape design can become very complex very quickly. We use the Regrarians Platform, a h...olistic land planning template that clarifies the heirarchy of design decisions. This way one ensures that the most permanent elements(i.e water systems) are prioritised over less permanent elements(i.e fencing systems) resulting in a functional and robust final product. You can visit the Regrarians website here www.regrarians.org or read our article on the Regrarians Platform here www.oaktreedesigns.com.au/notes-regrarians-advanced-design- #oaktreedesigns #regenerativeagriculture #regrarians #regrariansplatform #keyline #permaculture #landscapedesign #regenaustralis #intergratedacres

11.01.2022 The Grigadale Arboretum in Lobería, Argentina is a great example of projects similar to those as suggested in the Dehesa Australis project. Dehesa Australis speaks to the importance of tree crops in agriculture, cites the Spanish Dehesa as a brilliant but undervalued model for productive savannah, calls for a deeper study of the benefits of these systems in Australia and finally offers a systematised model for how they might be fostered here for multi-bottom-line benefits. W...e propose the Dehesa Australis project include 1. Bringing together relevant parties, ready, willing and able to begin a more formal conversation on the subject. 2. List and describe all species/varieties that we find to be likely candidates for Australian Dehesa analogue plantings. 3. Locate all those relevant species/varieties that are currently present in Australia. 4. Locate and document all relevant/applicable systems currently existing in Australia. 5. Locate and document all relevant/applicable systems currently existing outside of Australia(The Dehesa of Iberia being but one). 6. List/locate all relevant species/varieties that currently are not believed to be in Australia and establish systems and relationships with relevant parties(breeders, botanical gardens, Australian quarantine etc) to enable a safe and streamlined means of importing desired propagation material from international sources. 7. Establish physical locations where we can collect and maintain entire arboretums of applicable species/varieties into Dehesa Australis collections. A place where the best varieties of the best species could be grown and kept for future application. Ideally at least one arboretum per major bio-region. 8. Long-sighted breeding programs which aim to cultivate hardy, precocious, high yielding varieties specific to each bio-region. https://www.grigadale.org//arboretum-grigadale-has-sido-a/ #oaktreedesigns #regenerativeagriculture #dehesaaustralis #regenaustralis #permaculture #permaculturedesign #sustainability #ethnobotany #dehesa #byronjoel #proanthropism #humanaslamdsteward #stewardship #positivefuture #regenerative #savannah #savanna

10.01.2022 As I’ve matured I’ve realised it’s better for all involved if I only obsess over one genus of plant at a time. My current obsession is with the Platycerium genus. 04.01.2022 I was surprised to find Ephedra distachya growing in great abundance along a train track near Florence today. I cant recommend it highly enough.

01.01.2022 Award-winning farmer, Jeff Pow, has climbed into an ancient karri tree to defend Lewin forest from clear-felling and highlight the ongoing threat to ancient forests in the south west. Do you back jeff? Many Western Australians mistakenly believe old growth forests are protected theyre not. Karri and jarrah forests continue to be logged, in a loss making industry (yep thats right Western Australians are subsidising the states timber industry). I stand with Jeff Pow in his message to the state govt regarding the FPCs management of WAs forests. Please SHARE, Folks. It's over 55,000 so far. The WA Forests Management Plan is up for review. Send this to the Premier and Ministers for Ag, Forestry and Environment and help spread the word! Please assist and email your submission to... https://ibackjeff.good.do/ibackjeff/i-back-jeff/
