19.01.2022 .. moving a mob to a new paddock... . . It’s a little mob, but it’s a new paddock. We’ve a rider out front, out back, on the left & on the right. Kit’s in the lead, the mob will follow her, @_ebonyandme , Bessie’s @bplusfea on the left shoulder (and ahead chasing cows out of our path) and dad the right flank, they’ll put a stop to any wayward thoughts from a beast thinking to escape. I’m at the back, on the tail A position not to be underestimated I keep the stragglers moving. Thankfully no stragglers

11.01.2022 . . A short story for Dad on Father’s Day . . ... The Drover The selfish sun hung in the sky like a giant orange ball, its heat waves unable to burn the rough skin of the Drover. His big bay gelding was as fresh as the Spring grass, chewing on the bit, ready for the rush. The loosely coiled stock whip hung from the old stock saddle ready for use on the thousand head of Hereford cattle that trudged on through the dusty plains. The young blue cattle dog yelped with undying excitement, he wanted to nip the heels of the slow calves ahead. The Drover whistled harshly putting the young dog back into place. To the left, another drover cracked his whip against the dense air sending a pitch scream through the herd, urging them through the dried up gully. The Drover rolled his silver spurs along the sides of the gelding, breaking into a swift controlled canter. Not far up ahead, a small herd of about a dozen cows headed right along the gullies bank. How this annoyed him! Followed by his dogs, the Drover urged the horse into a fast lope, sending the gelding to round up the stragglers. Once back in control of the herd, the Drover slowed back to a walk, allowing his trusty gelding to have a breathe of the fresh air a small wind had picked up. Drops of rain threatened to fall, and the once red horizon turned black and deadly. Rain was on its way. Cheers were sent out through the mob, but the Drover just lowered his Akubra’s brim to cover his intense eyes, however his weatherbeaten lips turned up in satisfaction. The rain began to fall. 08.01.2022 GARDEN Diary.. start of SPRING... Aromas and colours everywhere . . There’s perfumes in the air, the wisteria is about to burst, the grevillea’s to flower, the lily pilly a profusion of red yellow & orange, citrus full of buds & flowers (works well as an air freshener for any room ) ... Even the chookies have a spring in their step, egg production has doubled.. 2 instead of 1 a day now . Not much happening by me though, in the kitchen garden, it’s all growing of its own accord, flowers, greens, brassicas, roots & tomatoes. I’m picking lots of greens, flowers, broad bean tips & the odd bean, snap peas, cabbage, more flowers , beetroot & thinnings. . There’s been the occasional tell tail sign of visitors feeding , I’ve decided it’s the doves, snipping away, they’re staying so I’ve just tweaked some barriers. . What next .. potatoes in, seeds sown, seeds collected, perennials transplanted, more vines & natives... and, well, there’s always mulching & watering #intheoakvalegarden #fromtheoakvalegarden See more
