25.01.2022 An enthralling dolphin display! https://www.facebook.com/192740257431217/posts/3470560302982513/

24.01.2022 We have suffered through a horror year of bushfires, heatwaves and droughts. This is the cost of continuing to mine and burn gas and other fossil fuels. This shows a lack of respect and care for families, farmers and wildlife which all deserve a safe climate to ensure their survival. https://www.theguardian.com//federal-government-gives-envi

22.01.2022 The Australian Conservation Foundation is encouraging public comments on the review into the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act once it's been released. To this end, ACF is encouraging environmentalists to learn the skill of writing letters to newspapers in order to get the word out. To register for the session this Friday or for more information on the ACF'S campaign go to https://www.acf.org.au/letters_to_the_editor_training_1120

21.01.2022 OFF and Georges River Environmental Alliance members met with Save Sydney's Koalas and Save Mount Gilead Inc. to discuss koala issues, specifically new roads planned to link the Appin and Menangle areas over end-of-year drinks. All four proposals will impact vital koala habitat which includes the historic Mt Gilead Estate. We learned that a Traffic Impact Study needs to be undertaken to ascertain the least damaging outcome for the environment.

21.01.2022 Beautiful way of protecting Nature!

19.01.2022 Today and tomorrow are going to be extra hot! So on such very hot days please put out some extra bird baths and water drinking containers for the birds, lizards and animals. Please put a rock or stick in also, so they can climb out and don’t drown. Hope you stay cool!

18.01.2022 They call this progress...

17.01.2022 Today OFF sold 15 Oatley 2021 calendars in just 40mins at South Hurstville and Oatley. Feedback was very positive, with people appreciating the picturesque scenery and wildlife photos. We now have PRDnationwide Harvey Oatley and Oatley Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre stocking them also.

17.01.2022 Commencing tomorrow, 28th September, Georges River Council will remove ten Tallowwood street trees (Eucalyptus microcorys) from outside nos. 123-151 Hurstville Road, Oatley. Council has stated they were damaging infrastructure and are unsustainable in their current location, and they will be replaced with a more suitable species. 13.01.2022 To all members and supporters, OFF thanks you for your continued support in helping to conserve our beautiful natural environment. Local victories in 2020 include the approval of the Oatley Bowling Club site remediation, and the retention of the Foreshore Scenic Protection Area (which will be the subject of another OFF campaign in 2021). Our three planting areas (Moore and Boorea reserves and Gannons Park) are progresssing well, and our bushcare group continues its valuable... work in Oatley Park. Our calendar was a sell-out and we thank those who contributed to its success, including the following outlets: The hungry spoon cafe Oatley Oatley Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre Poveli Deli Cafe PRDnationwide Harvey Oatley Mulga Road Bookshop One 2 One Cafe Oatley ST. KAI Lugarno Deli Cafe Oatley Lions Club Mark Coure MP Mullane's Pharmacy & Oatley West Post Office Oatley Historical Society and Kogarah Bay Progress Association Inc for assisting with our sell out-calendar. 11.01.2022 OFF members will be participating in the PADDLE OUT event at 11am this Saturday 21st November at Bar Beach, Narooma to help save six beautiful marine sanctuaries. Like underwater parks, these protected areas conserve ocean wildlife and ecosystems. In 2019 the NSW government removed protections to allow recreational fishing in these sanctuaries, including two at Montague Island. Feel free to join us! https://fb.me/e/1FlXufpFS

09.01.2022 Thousands of everyday citizens in fire zones across Australia, armed with their mobile phones, began monitoring local frogs through the Frog ID app. It's remarkable to see rare and threatened frogs recorded in fire-damaged areas, including the vulnerable southern barred frog (Mixophyes balbus), the mountain frog (Philoria kundagungan), and the endangered giant barred frog (Mixophyes iteratus). https://theconversation.com/australians-recorded-frog-calls

06.01.2022 In 2018 Georges River Council, through its Community Strategic Plan identified that "a protected environment and green open spaces" was a priority. This video features general manager Gail Connolly who promises that the next rate rise will help Council to "maintain" and "enhance" the environment. OFF, and other community groups who care about the environment look forward to working closely with Council!... Kogarah Bay Progress Association Inc St George District Residents Network Inc. 06.01.2022 Great news there has been a marked increase in the amount of numbats at a Western Australian conservation site. 35 have now been identified so there is a strong belief amonst experts that this endangered species can survive! https://www.abc.net.au//wa-numbat-numbers-soar-in/12900562

06.01.2022 A GREAT WIN FOR OUR KOALAS The Local Land Services Miscellaneous Amendment Bill which would have enabled widespread destruction of habitat was blocked in the Upper House thanks to Catherine Cusack voting against the government. Its now been referred to a committee for revision. https://www.smh.com.au//koala-bill-block-by-dissident-libe

05.01.2022 2020 just got better with an early Christmas present for environmentalists, the Bylong Valley Protection Alliance has succeeded in defending the Independent Planning Commission’s (IPC) refusal of a new coal mine on prime agricultural land in the Bylong Valley near Mudgee. Korean company KEPCO which has large landholdings in the valley had appealed against the IPC's initial win in the NSW Land and Environment Court. The was rejected on several grounds, including long-term environmental, social and economic impacts. https://www.smh.com.au//energy-giant-loses-bylong-coal-min

05.01.2022 Georges River residents are eligible for a free tree from the NSW Government's Click and Collect Free Tree Giveaway. Claim yours now by visiting their website at https://bit.ly/342U5Bk Please don't be too disappointed, as the only offerings are bottlebrush and two types of lilli pilli. We would have expected a more diverse range of native plants and tree species endemic to the LGA, or even better, species that are threatened locally.

04.01.2022 OFF members yesterday spoke to Penshurst Public School students to raise awareness about the plight of koalas and what students can do to help save the healthy koalas at Appin and Campelltown. The OFF members then accompanied students on a fundraising walk for Koalas, with chanting and placards. 04.01.2022 This morning OFF members travelled from home to attend the "Paddle Out" event at Narooma. Over 200 kayakers, SUP boarders and surfers highlighted the NSW Government's relaxation of fishing laws which will ruin the six Batemans marine sanctuaries. Afterwards many of us paddled around Wangonga Inlet followed by a well deserved lunch. Save Batemans Sanctuaries Community

04.01.2022 Although the Georges River passes through eight local government areas of suburban Sydney its water quality is surprisingly good, particularly in its upper reaches. Consider taking a bushwalk or swim this summer.

01.01.2022 The continued dumping of disposable masks is a planet-wide pandemic and needs to be stopped immediately.

01.01.2022 Sydney is the only city in the world where longwall mining is allowed in a publicly owned water catchment! Proposed coal mine expansions will lock in 28 years of destructive longwall mining in the water catchments of Wollongong, Macarthur and Sydney. It will cause damage and loss of water to swamps, creeks and rivers and to the Cordeaux, Avon and Nepean Reservoirs. The world is moving away from coal, economically and environmentally. ...
