24.01.2022 Hail Damaged Roofs and the implications of items within the properties. Over the last two days we have been contacted by property owners who have been instructed that all items within their property/warehouse etc must be disposed of as it is contaminated with asbestos fibres following the recent weather events. This information is misleading and often causes angst and unnecessary costs on the property owner.... Many items can be salvaged and decontaminated by a qualified asbestos removalist. Following the decontamination it is required that a Licensed Asbestos Assessor undertake sampling of the items to ensure that the items are free of all asbestos residue. OccSafe Australia Pty Ltd have a Licensed Asbestos Assessor with the ACT Government with no restrictions on our licence that means that we are able to perform these assessments. Occsafe Australia staff have worked on a number of disaster recovery projects both within Australia and overseas over the years and it is our experience that in general most hard surface items can be successfully decontaminated and in some some items of soft furnishings can be decontaminated. 24.01.2022 Workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica which takes effect in Queensland from 1 July 2020. Is silica safe? In short no if appropriate risk reduction strategies are not in place. Silica is a major threat to Australian workers working with silica increases your risk of developing respiratory issues, including lung cancer. With the right advice, control measure, awareness and training, you can help to protect yourself or your workers from these dangers. Occ...Safe Australia would like to bring to your attention the new workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica which takes effect in Queensland from 1 July 2020. The national workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica has been halved from an eight-hour time-weighted average airborne concentration of 0.1 milligrams per cubic metre (mg/m3) to 0.05 mg/m3. Respirable crystalline silica dust is so fine you usually cant see it it can stay airborne for long periods of time and be easily inhaled deep into the lungs. Breathing in respirable crystalline silica dust can cause serious lung diseases including silicosis and lung cancer as well as chronic renal disease and autoimmune disorders. What does this mean for you? You must manage worker exposure to dust and meet your existing duties and obligations under Queensland work health and safety legislation. This means: - using higher order controls (including elimination, engineering, isolation and substitution) - air monitoring is requirement if a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) is uncertain about the potential risk of exposure in their workplace. The results of the air monitoring need to be shared with any employees that may have been exposed to the harmful particles.- health monitoring - training for workers - providing workers with respiratory protection where needed. 23.01.2022 Formwork industry compliance audits WHSQ have announced a targeted formwork industry compliance audit program. They will carry out compliance audits in the formwork sector of the construction industry starting in June 2020.... Formwork incidents involving the collapse or failure of formwork systems and components can have serious consequences. Several formwork incidents this year have highlighted the need for improvements in the safe construction and use of formwork systems. The compliance audits consist of two stages. Stage one will be a desktop audit focussing on formwork documentation. Stage two will be an audit of the formwork structure and verifying the documented formwork systems. This will include the inspection of erected formwork systems and safe work practices. The audits will assess compliance with the Formwork Code of Practice 2016. Who is being targeted? This is a state-wide campaign targeting employers whose business involves formwork construction activities, formwork designers and engineers, formwork contractors and principal contractors. Preparing your workplace You should review your work practices to ensure your workplace complies with the Formwork Code of Practice 2016. Access the Code of Practice https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au//115/formwork-cop-2016.pdf the audits inspectors will focus on: documentation inspection practices modular proprietary formwork systems bracing defective material erection and dismantling procedures other trade workers access and egress stacked materials lifting training of workers.
