14.02.2022 For Children’s Mental Health Week this year’s theme is: Growing Together. Ask your child to consider: How they have grown ... What they need to help them grow How they have helped others grow Challenges in life help us grow and adapt to trying new things. This helps us move out of our comfort zone, which means we are open to new possibilities and opportunities. #childrensmentalhealthweek #mentalhealth #occupationaltherapy #childrensmentalhealth #emotionalregulation

04.02.2022 Stuck for ideas on how to spread awareness about Children’s Mental Health Week and teach your child about this year’s theme of growth? Check out these activity ideas from https://buff.ly/2WrFU4K If possible, get some plant or flower seeds and a pot to grow them in. Ask your child: What will these seeds grow into? What will they need to help them grow? How tall do you think they will grow? This activity teaches them that:... - We don’t always notice something is growing - Things can grow in unexpected ways - We can’t always see growth immediately Ask your child who or what helps them when they feel upset, angry or worried. Have them write a few sentences on what helps them feel better, and also to draw a picture of it. For example, ‘listening to my favourite music helps me feel calm.’ Create a Wellbeing Well using a basket or box where your child can place these wellbeing ideas. This activity teaches them that: - Growing means recognizing your feelings - Part of growth is finding ways to cope with and overcome negative feelings Ask your child to think about a skill they enjoy, such as riding a bike, reading, dancing, swimming, baking, etc. Ask them: What steps did you take to get there? What went wrong? What helped you keep going? What did you learn from the experience? Encourage them to draw pictures or create a small book describing their development over time, including when things didn’t go to plan. This activity teaches them that: - Part of growth is accepting that things can and will go wrong - We can achieve great things if we encourage ourselves to keep growing #childrensmentalhealthweek #mentalhealth #occupationaltherapy #childrensmentalhealth #emotionalregulation

24.01.2022 Did you know that playing board games can help support your child’s development? Not only are board games super fun for the whole family, but they can help develop a range of skills: Fine Motor Skills ---- Picking up small pieces, rolling the dice, handing out cards...there are so many board games that help strengthen fine motor skills through encouraging the use of small hand movements. Gross Motor Skills ---- Try mixing in some different challenges with a board game t...o help develop your child’s gross motor skills. Sitting on the floor cross-legged can help with their core strength, or ask them to hop, skip, or balance while waiting for their next turn. Social Skills ---- Whether they’re playing a board game with family or friends, the process requires the use of social skills to ensure a fair, smooth and fun experience. Things like deciding who goes first, or working together if they’re in a team with someone else, greatly contribute to enhancing social skills. Emotional Regulation ---- Playing board games can help children understand how to regulate their emotions, especially when they lose. Encouraging the importance of saying things like, That was a great game, or Thanks so much for playing, can help them regulate their emotions and strengthen friendships. #occupationaltherapy #otresources #OT #boardgame #paediatrics #occupationaltherapyforkids #OTHC

H - Hug yourself as tight as you can E - Extend both arms to the sides A- Arm circles, front and back... R - Reach up to the sky T - Take some deep breaths and relax #selfregulation #occupationaltherapy #anxiouschild #sensoryprocessing

23.01.2022 Oral motor skills and exercises - What are they and what is their importance when it comes to eating? Oral motor skills refer to the way in which we use the muscles inside our mouth, including the jaw, cheeks, lips and tongue. Oral motor skills are important because they help us eat, drink, talk, or use a straw. Here are some signs to look out for to see if your child may need some help developing their oral motor skills: ---- Difficulty chewing... ---- Preferences of certain food textures (like soft or crunchy) ---- Mashing food with their tongue ---- Difficulty keeping food in their mouth ---- Troubles drinking from a straw ---- Struggling to learn how to eat finger foods as a baby or toddler So, what can you do at home to help strengthen your child’s oral motor skills? Exercises for the Jaw ---- Baby teethers, eating chewy foods like licorice or dried mango Exercises for the Cheeks and Lips ---- Experiment with different textures, hold something between their teeth and keep it steady, blow bubbles (for toddlers and up), blowing kisses or whistling Exercises for the Tongue ---- Clicking with the tongue, counting their teeth using their tongue, licking soft foods off the corners of their mouth Remember: If you’re particularly concerned with their oral motor skills, don’t hesitate to contact us to see how our OT’s can help #occupationaltherapy #otresources #oralmotorskills #occupationaltherapist #occupationaltherapyforkids #OTHC

21.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day! This is an internationally recognised day for educating, advocating, and raising awareness about mental health to stop social stigma. 2020's pandemic has created many challenges for everyone around the world, which is why it's so important to recognise World Mental Health Day to support those with mental health struggles. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO): "It is expected that the need for mental health and psychosocial suppo...rt will substantially increase in the coming months and years. Investment in mental health programmes at the national and international levels, which have already suffered from years of chronic underfunding, is now more important than it has ever been. This is why the goal of this year’s World Mental Health Day campaign is increased investment in mental health." #worldmentalhealthday #OTHC #occupationaltherapy #mentalhealth #support #paediatrics

18.01.2022 Does your child struggle with keeping organised? Staying organised can make everyday life just that much easier, and while it can feel difficult to get used to in the beginning, it sure is worth it in the long run. Take a look at our top tips: Use colour coding for each school subject. For instance, yellow folders and notebooks can be used for English class, and red can be used for Maths. Coloured pens and highlighters can also help.... Ensure your child has an organised work space at home to do their homework. Keep supplies like stationery, calculators or their laptop nearby. Help your child with time management by writing down an estimate of how long each task could take. After they’ve finished it, adjust the time accordingly for the next time they must complete it. Break up tasks into segments (everything from homework to chores) as this way these tasks will appear more manageable since there is a beginning, middle and end. #organization #OTtips #occupationaltherapy

15.01.2022 Christmas is just two days away! We’ve got another Christmas-themed arts and crafts activity for you...and this time it’s all about reindeer We love sharing these ideas because they’re not only so much fun to do with your child, but also develop their fine motor and visual perception skills. You’ll need: - Paper plate - Scissors... - Glue stick - Paintbrush - Black marker - Brown paper - White paper - Red paper - Brown paint Method: - Paint the entire paper plate using the brown paint and paintbrush. - Using the scissors, cut the plate in half down the middle. - Cut the remaining halves in half again (you should be left with 4 pieces) - Using a large hole-puncher or scissors, cut a circle out of the red paper. This will be the nose. - Cut two circles out of the white paper. These will be the eyes. - Using the glue, stick the red paper circle to the pointed tip of the triangular plate piece. Stick the white circles above that to make the eyes. - Use the black marker to draw pupils inside the eyes. - Cut antler shapes out of the brown paper (we recommend using card paper) and stick them on the plate above the eyes. - You can repeat these steps and make 3 other reindeer using the same plate! #occupationaltherapy #otresources #artsandcrafts #christmas #reindeer #OTHC

10.01.2022 Ever thought about making an easy-to-read visual schedule for the morning? 06.01.2022 PLAY, PLAY, PLAY What are the different kinds of play, and why is it important to know them? Despite what many may think, play is a KEY part of a child’s development. It greatly enhances their emotional regulation, social skills, fine and gross motor skills, and of course their creativity and imagination. Since there are so many types of play, we’ll cover a few in this post and go over others in an upcoming post.... FREE/PRETEND PLAY - This is where your child takes the reins and interacts with their environment, toys, with other children, role playing, etc. Most of the time this kind of play doesn’t require any toys at all, and you could encourage your child to use objects like a box or sticks from the backyard to make up a scenario or game. TOYS - While toys can also be used for Free/Pretend Play, Toy Play is obviously more focused on toys. When you hand your child a toy, watch to see if they understand its function. SOCIAL PLAY SKILLS - A big part of developing social skills through play is understanding the concept of sharing with others. Encourage them to share toys with their friends, as well as waiting their turn for something. SENSORY - Developing the sensory system is extremely important for being able to effectively process sensory information such as touch, sound and movement that we all experience every day. Sensory tubs are great for introducing new senses to your child, and lets them get a little messy, too. #occupationaltherapy #otresources #OT #sensoryprocessing #playtime #paediatricoccupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapyforkids #OTHC

04.01.2022 Summer is officially upon us! Summer is an awesome time to get outdoors with the kids and have some family fun - why not make the most of it and keep building those OT skills while they’re at it? Check out our fun activities your child can enjoy whilst continuing to build their OT development: Sand Play Writing in wet sand stimulates more areas of the brain due to its multi-sensory nature. The letters that your child forms with their finger in sand tend to be more memor...able than the marks they make on paper. Have them write the alphabet numbers or play noughts and crosses Sensory I Spy This is great for any environment, from the home to the park or the beach. It’s another multi-sensory experience involving eyes, ears, touch and smell. Give your child a scavenger hunt list or verbally tell them items like: something green and soft, something fast and noisy. Surf’s Up Boogie boarding and surfing are great ways to build praxis (planning) skills, bilateral coordination, balance, and proprioception. If the waves are a bit too much for your little one, have them practise the paddling on a board on the sand with their arms and then incorporate the legs. #occupationaltherapy #otresources #paediatrics #occupationaltherapyforkids #OTHC #summer

28.12.2021 Emotional growth is often a gradual process that happens over time. Sometimes we can feel ‘stuck’ in one place, and this can make us feel sad or discouraged. As part of Children’s Mental Health Week let’s explore what it means to help each other grow together emotionally. Here are some tips:... Read some books that you may already have that explore ideas around growth and change Use the growth of plants and trees as a metaphor (just keep the focus on personal growth as much as possible) Use other types of media to explore the theme of growth - such as art, music, TV shows, etc. Share your own experiences of how you have changed and grown over the years Source: https://buff.ly/2WrFU4K #childrensmentalhealthweek #mentalhealth #occupationaltherapy #childrensmentalhealth #emotionalregulation

19.12.2021 VISUAL PERCEPTION is the brain’s ability to understand and make sense of what the eyes see. It’s also not just the act of seeing something, but rather perceiving what it means to you.
