13.01.2022 Ocean Grove Coastcare is a recipient of the Coastcare Victoria 2020 Community Grants. Their project ‘Bin the Butt’ is a a pilot project in collaboration with B...arwon Coast Committee of Management and the City of Greater Geelong to address over-representation of cigarette butt litter along the Ocean Grove coastline. During litter collection activities, Ocean Grove Coastcare volunteers find high levels of cigarette butts present on the beach. This project combines installation and monitoring of cigarette butt bins, distribution of personal butt bins and community awareness and education aimed at reducing cigarette butts on the beach. Margot Busch from Ocean Grove Coastcare says With this grant enabling the installation of cigarette butt bins, we hope to find several hundred fewer butts at next year's beach clean-up and litter count. We look forward to working with Ocean Grove Coastcare on this project and hopefully seeing a reduction in cigarette butts on the beach!

13.01.2022 For #WorldEnvironmentDay we want to acknowledge and pay our respects to the people who, through these tough times the last few months, have continued to care fo...r nature and culture. Over the past few months we have been sharing stories of Indigenous rangers who, when isolated from the rest of Australia, have continued to care for country. Indigenous rangers have worked around social distancing rules to keep tackling noxious weeds, to start their early dry season burns to prevent massive bushfires, to continue to control feral animals, to keep protecting native animals and to take care of important cultural sites. In many communities around Australia, Indigenous rangers have also stood up to help their communities even more. Lending a hand when communities needed help looking after old people, getting the message out about health risks, maintaining community infrastructure and even simply collecting supplies. Indigenous rangers have been a huge force for good during these hard times and we take out hats off to them. #fornature #environment #indigenousrangers #healthycountry

07.01.2022 Fairy-wren wants a wife! While we find ourselves at the moment having a lot of things to ponder and consider (not least being "What pair of underpants do I sacrifice in order to get some elastic?"), the birds of Ocean Grove have only one thing on their minds. As mentioned in our last newsletter, spring is gradually on its way (some call this time of year 'Early Spring' or 'Sprinter'), and this is becoming more evident as our local birds begin to reveal a growing preoccupation... with breeding. Over the last couple of weeks, some birds, such Spotted Dove, Little Raven and Australian Magpie, have been observed carrying nesting material, while a pair of Masked Lapwings were seen being 'intimate' together on a roof in Arcturus Rd. The pair of resident Black Swans at Begola Wetlands have built their nest in dense vegetation on the island and seem to be currently incubating eggs. Keep an eye out for cygnets in maybe a couple of weeks time! Perhaps a not so obvious, but no less prevalent, sign of the breeding urge in our local birds has been an increase in vocal and physical behaviours. These behaviours are often quite loud and aggressive, as birds stake out breeding territories and compete for potential mates. You may have seen in the last few weeks a range of birds, such as New Holland Honeyeater, Red Wattlebird, White-browed Scrubwren or Brown Thornbill, either chasing each other, calling from prominent positions, or just calling or behaving in a slightly more frenetic fashion than usual. Some bird species may even change their plumage for the breeding season. If you come across a Superb Fairy-wren that appears a bit 'tatty', a closer inspection will most likely reveal that it is a male part way through moulting back to its striking blue and black breeding plumage (see above photo of a moulting male at the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve in 2017). Over the next few weeks, these courtship, copulative and nest-building activities will begin to segue into egg incubation, egg hatching and the consequent frantic efforts by parents to feed the resultant nestlings. Regardless of whatever stage of social restrictions we may be staying in or moving to or from, the cycles of nature will continue rolling on.

05.01.2022 Spring is here!

04.01.2022 National Tree Day - Cancelled Sadly, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the official National Tree Day planting events have been cancelled this year. But there is still heaps we can do, see Planet Ark's ideas for positive environmental actions for everyone https://planetark.org/ and the National Tree Day Activity Guide for kids' activities: https://www.teachstarter.com//teaching-/national-tree-day/ The trees we put in last year at Lake Avenue Reserve have really taken off and are looking wonderful. If you've been down to the reserve to weed around the trees thank you! The coordinator of the event last year, John Bowman, has noticed the difference and passes on his heartfelt gratitude also.
