02.01.2022 Kaya. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2020 NAIDOC theme is ‘Always was, always will be’. It recognises that First Nations Peoples have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65 000 years. NAIDOC Week celebrations began at school on Friday. Room 20 performed the song ‘One Heart’, created by local Wiluna students in a youth program called ‘Reach1 Teach1’. They also sang ‘I Am Australian...’ in Yawuru language, the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters around Broome. Room 20 students acknowledged, respected and embraced the true history of this country while recognising and celebrating that we have one of the oldest continuing cultures on the planet. All students will be engaged in a range of NAIDOC activities this week to recognise and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their history.
