24.01.2022 "An eating disorder is a diagnosed type of disordered eating. Disordered eating is when a person has an unhealthy relationship with food and eating. Disordered eating habits and behaviours can lead to the development of an eating disorder. They can impact every aspect of a young person’s life. Learn about how they can be treated and where to get help. We can all experience unhealthy eating habits from time to time.... Unhealthy eating habits come and go, but for some people, they can become a real problem. These behaviours, extreme concerns about weight or how our body looks, are a sign that it’s time to seek support. Disordered eating often begins with dieting, but lots of other factors can increase the risk that this may develop into an eating disorder. These include: - family factors like a family history of eating disorders - individual factors such as low self-esteem or wanting to do things perfectly all the time - outside factors like the influence of the media and social pressures to look a certain way - life factors certain stressors like exams, work, relationships and feeling overwhelmed. Eating disorders are a serious health issue, damaging and at times even life-threatening. If you’re having problems with disordered eating or body image, it’s important to seek professional support. The sooner you ask for help, the faster your recovery will be." 23.01.2022 "Encouraging literacy development Literacy development is a vital part of your child’s overall development. It’s the foundation for doing well at school, socialising with others, problem-solving, making decisions, developing independence, managing money and working. But before children can learn to read and write, they need to develop the building blocks for literacy the ability to speak, listen, understand, watch and draw.... And as children get older, they also need to learn about the connection between letters on a page and spoken sounds. For this to happen, your child needs plenty of experience with: - pictures and objects how you can use words to talk about them - letters and words how they look and sound, and what they’re called - sounds how words can rhyme, begin and end with the same letters, be broken up into parts like syllables, be formed by blending different sounds and so on. You can help with all these areas of your child’s early literacy development by: - communicating with your child - reading together - playing with rhyme and other sounds with your child. And the great news is that you can do this in ways that are fun for both of you." 16.01.2022 Frequently Asked Childrens Sleep Question - My child snores and gasps at night. Should I be worried? Snoring can be caused by a cold or a blocked nose. It’ll usually sort itself out when the cold has gone. If the snoring doesn’t go away and happens most nights, even when your child is well, it could be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea causes your child to stop breathing for short periods during sleep. See your GP if your child continually snores, s...tops breathing during sleep, works hard to breathe, breathes through her mouth, tosses and turns at night, or sweats a lot overnight. These breathing difficulties can make your child wake up tired and cranky in the morning. 14.01.2022 A fever or high temperature is common in children. Fever is a normal response to many illnesses. The fever itself is usually not harmful in fact, it helps the body's immune system fight off infection. While fevers can be concerning for parents, doctors will usually be more concerned about what is causing the fever, and not what the child’s temperature is. It is more important for you to monitor any symptoms of the underlying illness, rather than the fever itself. Your child... has a fever when their temperature reads above 38C on a thermometer. Your child may also be: - unwell and hot to touch - irritable or crying - more sleepy than usual - vomiting or refusing to drink - shivering - in pain If your baby is under three months and has a fever above 38C, then you should see a doctor, even if they have no other symptoms. 09.01.2022 Today is Sweetheart Day! Heart Kids Foundation celebrate this day as a reminder of the 65,000 Australian babies, children and adults who live with congenital heart disease. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most common congenital disorder in newborns, affecting eight babies born in Australia every day. CHD encompasses a range of abnormalities that occur when the heart or blood vessels near the heart fail to develop normally before birth. Progress in diagnosis and treatm...ent through surgery or cardiac catheterisation makes it possible to fix most defects. Despite the availability of surgical options the impact of CHD is often life changing to individuals and their families. Many patients face a lifetime of repeated heart surgeries, and ongoing medical treatment. 02.01.2022 Head injury general advice Children often bump or bang their heads, and it can be difficult to tell whether an injury is serious or not. Any knock to the head is considered a head injury. Head injuries are classified as mild, moderate or severe. Many head injuries are mild, and simply result in a small lump or bruise. Mild head injuries can be managed at home, but if your child has received a moderate or severe injury to the head, they need to see a doctor.... Seek help immediately by calling an ambulance if: - your child has had a head injury involving high speeds or heights greater than a metre, for example, car crashes, high-speed skateboard accidents or falling from playground equipment - your child loses consciousness (passes out) - your child seems unwell and vomits more than once after hitting their head. The symptoms experienced straight after a head injury are used to determine how serious the injury is. The information below is a guideline. Moderate to severe head injury If your child has a moderate or severe head injury, they may: - lose consciousness - be drowsy and not respond to your voice - be dazed or shocked - not cry straight after the knock to the head (younger children) - be confused, have memory loss or loss of orientation about place, time or the people around them - experience visual disturbance - have unequally sized pupils or weakness in their arm or leg - have something stuck in their head, or a cut causing bleeding that is difficult to stop, or a large bump or bruise on their head - have a seizure, convulsion or fit - vomit more than once Source @rchmelbourne #headinjury #injury #bump #developmentalpaediatrics #paediatrics
