18.01.2022 16th JULY 1914 . . . On this day in 1914, Jack Riley, one of the men reputed as the Man From Snowy River, on whom Banjo Patersons ballad was based, is buried.... The Man From Snowy River is a bush ballad by Australian poet and writer A. B. Banjo Paterson. Paterson, who lived during Australias late colonial period and early years of Federation, was passionately nationalistic and popular among many Australians searching for their own identity separate from Britain. In 1885, Paterson began publishing his poetry in the Sydney edition of The Bulletin under the pseudonym of "The Banjo", the name of a favourite horse. Arguably, two of his best-known poems are "The Man From Snowy River and Waltzing Matilda. The Man From Snowy River, tells the story of a young stockman who, through wild and dangerous terrain, successfully chases down a valuable horse that has escaped from a station in Australias high country. Like many of Patersons ballads, it paints a rich picture of the countryside, peppered with unique Australian characters; however, the identity of Patersons expert rider has long been the subject of debate. Paterson met Irishman Jack Riley when he visited friends at Bringenbrong Station, a large property in the Upper Murray region. Riley, who lived in a basic timber hut near Tom Groggin Station, shared many stories with Paterson as they camped out overnight. One story, in particular, reputedly told by Riley, captured Patersons imagination, describing a thrilling horse chase through dangerous territory, giving rise to the scenes that would be developed in The Man From Snowy River. Riley lived a wild and exciting life as a stockman until he was in his seventies. In July 1914, his mates in Corryong received the news that Riley was seriously ill so, taking a stretcher, they attempted to carry him from his hut back to Corryong. Reaching Surveyors Creek Junction, the group sheltered overnight in a deserted mining hut, but during the night, Riley died. He was buried in Corryong Cemetery on 16 July 1914. 16.01.2022 Are you a Collector? During the recent bushfires, many people lost, or came close to losing, items they had collected over many years. Packing for an emergency evacuation means you cannot take everything, but risk losing everything. Accordingly, the Museum is proposing to document 50 local Collections held by individuals and organisations within the Bay and its localities. Please provide a brief description of what your collection comprises and we will consider it for pr...ofessional documentation off-site, thus creating a record of your significant memorabilia/collection. Initially, please advise the nature and size of your collection by contacting us at [email protected] We will then contact you to discuss how we may help.

15.01.2022 28th JULY 1923 . . . On this day in 1923, construction begins on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Sydney Harbour Bridge connects the Sydney CBD with the North S...hore commercial and residential areas on Sydney Harbour. It is the largest steel arch bridge in the world, though not the longest, with the top of the bridge standing 134 metres above the harbour. In 1912, John Bradfield was appointed chief engineer of the bridge project, which also had to include a railway. Plans were completed in 1916, but the advent of WWI delayed implementation until 1922. Workshops were set up on Milsons Point on the North Shore where the steel was fabricated into girders. Granite for the bridges construction was quarried near Moruya. Construction of the bridge began on 28 July 1923 and took 1400 men eight years to build at a cost of 4.2 million. Sixteen lives were lost during its construction, while up to 800 families living in the path of the proposed Bridge path were relocated and their homes demolished when construction started. The Premier of New South Wales, Jack Lang, opened Sydney Harbour Bridge on 19 March 1932. https://aso.gov.au//doc/construction-sydney-harbour/clip1/ Pictured: Ceremony of turning the first sod of the northern railway approach at the site of North Sydney Station, by the Honorable R.T. 05.01.2022 17th AUGUST 1813 . . . On this day, 17th August 1813, Matthew Flinders writes to Sir Joseph Banks, outlining his reasons for suggesting New Holland be called Au...stralia after Banks disapproves of the name. Australia was previously named New Holland by the Dutch sea explorers who landed on the western coast in the early 1600s. James Cook claimed the eastern coast of the continent for England in 1770, naming it New South Wales. After the First Fleet arrived in 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip was given orders to extend the claim further west. The western half of the continent continued to be known as New Holland, and the eastern half was New South Wales. Matthew Flinders arrived in Australia on the Reliance in 1795. Shortly after his arrival in New South Wales, Flinders undertook numerous short voyages of exploration with ships surgeon George Bass, whom he had met on the Reliance. Between 1801 and 1803, Flinders circumnavigated the Australian continent, completing the charting of the coastline and proving that Terra Australis was not split into two large islands, a theory he held prior to his voyage. Flinders returned to England in 1810, and shortly thereafter wrote an account of his expeditions, "A Voyage to Terra Australis". It was in this account that Flinders proposed the name "Terra Australis" or Australia be adopted for the southern continent. However, while some in England approved of the name Flinders had selected, wealthy sponsor Sir Joseph Banks did not support his proposal. A letter from Matthew Flinders to Joseph Banks, dated 17 August 1813, stated I will not disguise, that my chagrin was no less, to learn that the term Terra Australis, as a name for New Holland and New South Wales collectively was not approved. The letter went on to explain in detail Flinders reasons for proposing the name of Australia. Ultimately, it was Governor Lachlan Macquarie who, impressed by Flinders arguments, advocated that the name Australia be adopted. https://archive.org//AVoyageToTerraAustralisVolume1/page/n9 Pictured: Captain Matthew Flinders RN by Toussaint Antoine de Chazal. 04.01.2022 A few weeks ago we were recalling the glory days of going to the pictures when there were ushers and usherettes to show us to our seats. And I was reflecting ba...ck to those times and remembering too how the film would sometimes break. Im thinking back to those Saturday afternoon matinees when right in the middle of a John Wayne cowboy flick, the screen would suddenly go white and the theatre would break out with cat calls, jeers and boos. Back then projectionists changed film reels by hand and had to know how to cut and splice the footage whenever it broke. A real art. Another job thats been phased out through digital film technology.
