25.01.2022 Horrible sashes, beautiful view of Coogee beach #sashcords #oldschoolcarpentry

23.01.2022 Little tricky job, rotted cill. One option might be slapping a bit of lead over the top and giving it ‘an extremely thorough vacuum!!!........!’ Anyone that thinks that’s my solution is either new on the page, or hasn’t been paying attention Have a great weekend

23.01.2022 Tony’s windows were a bit crook, some weren’t even windows A few previous repairs which were pretty much the ‘usual’ standard, when you get anyone that isn’t me One man and his mutt likes to raise the bar however New custom made replica sashes installed ... A double and quadruple Cill replaced ( not covered up with a bit of lead or renamed bog ) Sorry I forgot to photograph final result Have a great weekend folks

23.01.2022 An old client asked me if I could patch up a few old power point holes in his skirting.... the job grew! It’s not too often I do fix out these days, but it’s nice to have the skills and knowledge to fall back on, and not be a ‘one trick pony’ Have a great week folks

22.01.2022 Feels a little bit ‘Bram Stoker’ in the old School workshop. Sadly my little girl lost her beloved budgie Sophie. RIP Sophie

21.01.2022 Always a humbling and impressive place to visit. RESPECT!

19.01.2022 Little fixed sash casement window

17.01.2022 It all starts with some Nicely planed timber

16.01.2022 Couple of new accoya sashes ‘born’ in the Old School Carpentry workshop. Estimated lifespan 100 years plus. Paint will last 3 times longer as accoya does not absorb moisture, therefore will not expand and contract which is the issue with every other un-modified natural timber.... It’s ‘pricey’ but is it really Have a great weekend folks

16.01.2022 That’s a wrap for the week! Just as a side note folks for complete transparency, whilst I have price indications on the website, please be advised I’m NOT coming to your home in the north shore or blue mountains for $140! I’m Cronulla based, you know as well as I do what sydney traffic is like! A ‘little job, just couple of cords on a bottom sash’ could take up 4 hrs of my time, travel there... unload/set up/ clean up/ travel back...... My web master is hopefully going to make this point crystal clear in due course, I’m more than happy to do a small job, but expect a surcharge for it. Have a great weekend

15.01.2022 Guess my old tenon saw has cut its last tenon, a few tools I’ve had since I started almost 33 yrs ago, the old toolbox I made out of scraps of cedar from the ridge caps when we put a new roof on Robert burns cottage. Anyone else not throw shit away, because it’s ‘sentimental’ Have a great day folks

15.01.2022 Old School Carpentry, sash window SPECIALIST sash cords, all TIMBER double hung window repairs. Spiral sash balance replacement, glass replacement, Draught seal, replacement joinery ’like for like’ manufacturing in-house.

15.01.2022 Nice little Friday job The old sashes were barely holding together with L brackets, glazed in 2 mm clear and pretty horrible. I made a couple of replacements out of accoya, glazed in 6.38 white laminate and has my Draught seal fitted.... Points to note on jobs like this, unfortunately I seen a customers job where another ‘specialist’ had Draught sealed and reglazed his windows, real nice guy... charged an absolute fortune and left with a job, ‘not quite how I like to do it’.....I’ll leave that there.... however the way i draught seal is by my own methodology, not youtube or website stalking nor the sending of bogus emails pretending to be a customer and ‘asking questions’ ( you couldn’t make it up!) After a lot of head scratching and practice runs, we are at; A ‘neat’ system where all the seals are APPROPRIATE for the application ( a painted surface which needs periodic maintenance) All the seals match! It’s not a hodgepodge/Frankensteins monster of inappropriate product, given a ‘catchy’ made up name The window ACTUALLY WORKS with appropriate ‘Goldie locks’ pressure on the contact areas of the bead/sash as opposed to that right you can’t move it! Or that loose it’s doing nothing! The seal on the meeting rails is flush and looks like it’s meant to be there, ACTUALLY seals and isn’t like a big hairy caterpillar. A double seal on bottom sash ( inside and out) Top sash fully sealed This is where I’m at after 32 years folks, far from perfect but striving for it. Have a great weekend

14.01.2022 Installed. Some pretty Shonkey ‘joinery’ on the originals which led to premature failure. Stiles ( sides) did not run full height, curved top rail tacked on to 40mm stile... no proper haunched mortice and tenon joints. Ah well that’s ‘large scale production’ for you I guess. Matched them as close as I could but with traditional joinery construction. Best of a bad job on badly settled and twisted frames.

14.01.2022 Having a professional dedicated workshop I can offer a few choices on timber for replacement windows and window parts. With everything else in life each has its good and bad points. The main types I use are western red cedar, New Guinea rosewood, Oregon/ Douglas fir, merbau and accoya....Continue reading

14.01.2022 Some timber is so beautiful, it should be illegal to paint it. 100 percent Australian made () custom solid timber joinery. Supply only/ supply install ... #westernredcedar #haunchedmorticeandtenon

13.01.2022 Couple of bottom sashes, remake as per original detail, rehung on existing cords and fitted with original hardware, keep the cost and paint damage minimal. Check measure- make- install

12.01.2022 First little job knocked over in Enmore. Kim was quite worried as she could neither open nor close her bathroom window, cords weren’t snapped and it ‘just happened’ a ‘mystery’ A renderer/ tiler had pretty much filled the cavity with cement.......’and he might have got away with it too... if it hadn’t been for that pesky old school carpenter and his mutt!’ Probably more than 40 years since that top sash has been able to open, weight encased in cement. Probably the most import...ant room in the house to have great ventilation, which is exactly what a properly functioning sash window will give you ( they don’t call them ‘double hung’ for nothing ) A bit of bathroom yoga and all Kim’s ducks are in a row Done

12.01.2022 Casement window remake

10.01.2022 This is what one of Sydney’s high end building companies think of old school Carpentry I recon I should have letters after my name or something Yet I still get ‘ring ring ring ring....oh hi!... do you fix old windows?’ ... Almost 33 yrs at this now! And I remember fixing my first one with the late Thomas D Thompson RIP TOMMY

10.01.2022 Quite a common occurrence, when both cords snap the sash crashes down, shatters both panes of glass, breaks the tenons and splits the meeting rail. All fixed as was ( maybe just a wee bit better )

09.01.2022 Old sash window cremation, have a great long weekend folks

08.01.2022 Did you think or were you told; ‘you need new windows! You can’t fix that!’ A few sashes ready to install tomorrow. Bit of geometry involved in these ones, curved shoulders on the tenons... Anyone that has rotted windows and needs replacement sections, or just new cords and a pane of glass! Old School has you covered Email. [email protected] 0414661305 oldschoolcarpentry.com.au

08.01.2022 Remake a few sashes in a bay. Originals were horrible, falling apart and lacked any detail. The beading was ordinary also, so I remade all that and installed the Draught seals and some new hardware. Truth be told I remade a remake! As the perfectly square one looked horrible in the wonky frame, so I made a wonky window for a wonky ( technically it’s 4-5 lollipop sticks on the wonk) frame which looks perfect, it’s the details that make or break a job, and if you’ll go that extra mile, absorb the ‘time/cost’ ( cedar is anything but cheap) just because ‘it’s the right thing to do’

07.01.2022 Bronwyn called me Tuesday afternoon I think, having a bit of trouble with her old Stegbar windows, one had the bottom joint failing ( not surprising considering it was a bridle joint). The other had split apart owing to the hinge that was used. I quoted her there and then, and as I’m about to embark on an interstate project I made them Wednesday and installed today. That is the benefit of having a properly qualified, and more importantly experienced tradesman with his own fully functional, professional and dedicated joinery workshop, I can make Sheet happen when needs must. No bog, no boarding up

06.01.2022 Hi do you repair sash windows? I get that as the opening line a lot, probably my fault I guess, maybe ‘Old School Carpentry’ doesn’t paint a clear enough picture. But YES, YES I DO! I do the simple little jobs too! Like this one, a few bottom only re-cord for a lovey family, and a nice day in the sun ... Oh you DO make windows?!? You DO replace cills ?! Is another common sentence, as they’ve spent the morning phoning around all the Walter Mitty’s with the flash websites and the ‘thorough vacuum’ brigade anything but actually do the job they’re claiming to be specialists at. I’d get bored doing easy stuff all the time mind you, so I’m not complaining it’s all good Not the worlds best carpenter and joiner by any stretch of the imagination, but a ‘real’ one and old school Carpentry does what it says on the tin! #endrant

04.01.2022 Couple of rotted sashes to replicate and some disintegrating lead lights to remake, 100 years of coastal winds and rain took its toll !

04.01.2022 Nice little local job for Keith in Caringbah. His kitchen window was disintegrating, all fixed up and good as new oldschoolcarpentry.com.au

03.01.2022 The old School carpenters and joiners could test the sharpness of their tools by shaving their arms! And producing beautiful ribbons of timber with ease! ‘Scary sharp’ produces translucent shavings, ultra thin..... but I’ve got a little girl that wants to go bike riding so that’s not happening today, maybe next time! Have a great Sunday folks

03.01.2022 ‘The window was that rotted you could poke your finger through it!’ ‘Yeah yeah! Exaggerated much ?!’

01.01.2022 Rodney’s kitchen window was looking pretty sad, sashes rotted right through, and a jamb rotted out. We can see a previous repair of ‘bog’ on there ‘cover ups’ with bog or lead are a pathetic waste of time and money folks, if they can’t fix the thing properly......well what does that tell you? The original external trim was a pretty ordinary affair that didn’t cover or protect the edge of the brick line. I repaired the frame and made and installed a couple of new replica sas...hes in beautiful cedar. I hit them with about 6 coats of lacquer internally as it was going to be a nightmare for Rodney later. Every thing had to be done back to front on this one as there was a problematic internal security screen and the method they used to fashion the reveal wouldn’t have afforded sash removal anyway. Job done
