22.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY With the official opening next Thursday of the new Tolson Centre, housing OSCA House, the Scotch Archives & Museum, we look back to our first Scotch archivist and past OSCA President Geoff Tolson (’39). The following excerpt is taken from With a Keen But Loving Eye: a Centenary History of the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association 1913 2013 written by Bruce Brown (’60).... "Geoff Tolson grew up with a deep love for Scotch. His father had been a signaller for (Sir) John Monash at Gallipoli in 1915 and young Tolson entered the Scotch Junior School in 1930. On leaving Scotch in 1939 he began a successful career in electrical and illumination engineering. Meanwhile for over 40 years he had maintained a remarkable network of school friends, including Garth Tapp (1939) and Jim Shaw (1941), as well as a deep commitment to OSCA, culminating in his year as President in 1983. In 1984, he had retired and was perfectly placed to accept an invitation to become the School Archivist. From 1985 to 1992 he worked feverishly to establish the Archives, and undertook post-graduate studies to enhance the quality of his work. His regular articles in Great Scot provided insights into the School’s rich heritage. With his inimitable sense of humour, visits to the Scotch Archives were enjoyable experiences"
20.01.2022 Flashback Friday Arthur Godfrey Goodson - Science teacher at Scotch 1913-1915 Born in 1886 and educated at Leeds Central High School in England, he went on to take a Bachelor of Science at Leeds University where he excelled at sport, gaining a double blue for football and track sports.... In 1913 he took a position as a science tutor at Scotch College in Melbourne where he was admired by the boys and masters alike. If he was shocked to find an absence of soccer posts at the school, with Scotch not taking up soccer until the 1970s, he was able to satisfy his sporting desire in the bustling soccer culture of pre-War Melbourne.

18.01.2022 Rower Josh Booth ('08) puts Olympics hopes on the line to help fight coronavirus The medical graduate based in Canberra had deferred his internship to focus on the Tokyo Olympic Games, but the pandemic changed his plans. He moved back home to Melbourne to take up an internship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. "I felt like I needed to, in the sense of what else are you going to do if everyone's just sitting around their houses and there's something going on and you know, that they need doctors," he said.
16.01.2022 Flashback Friday There are 14 Scotch boys on AFL lists. Can you name them? A hundred years ago, the 1st XVIII began with high hopes, with nine players returning from 1919. However, two of them then left, and the first APS game, against Geelong Grammar School, was a 50-23 loss. An 85-68 win against Xavier College gave the team a chance at the premiership in what was then a six game competition, and this was strengthened by a 74-52 win at the MCG against Melbourne Grammar Scho...ol. An easy 94-14 win over Geelong College had Scotch feeling confident, and a 70-56 win against Wesley College enabled Scotch to face MGS in a play-off for the 1920 premiership. Played at the MCG, and with the come-from-behind win against Wesley probably having taken a toll, Scotch succumbed to Grammar, 81-47. From the 1920 team, Raymond George Reid Baxter (SC 1917-23) played for Richmond in 1925. See more
