23.01.2022 Harvest Launceston We have just direct drilled 40 acers of winter cover crop into our least product paddocks that will help us repair the soil after decades of conventional farming practices. Soil is a living breathing environment and it needs to be fed and protected like all living things. Below are some of the benefits we get from cover cropping:... Reduce soil compaction, soil should be 25% air. Reduce soil erosion, hold onto what we have already got. Improve soil structure, retain and increase nutrients in the soil Improve organic matter which promotes the growth of microorganisms and insects Greater water Infiltration & improve moisture retention, we do not irrigate. More natural weed suppression, we do not use chemicals. Promote a greater Biodiversity, we planted 12 types of seeds. We will be taking regular pictures and provide you updates as the season goes onall the best from the Oldway Farm Team.

We are very happy to announce that our new Kitchen has been completed on the farm and we have been busy preparing our one-of-a-kind cherry wood hot smoked bacon and will have it back THIS weekend 27th & 28th March at the Harvest Community Market Launceston and Farm Gate Hobart. We will have all four of our normal flavours Classic, Maple, Chilli, Garlic, and our first new flavour for 2021 Spring Bay Whiskey bacon. Hope to see you on Saturday or Sunday.

21.01.2022 Harvest Launceston At Oldway Farm we are farming food using organic principles, in a sustainable way applying the regenerative agriculture methods to insure we are here for generations to come. This means our Pigs are free range pigs that are born and raised outdoors and spend their entire lives free to graze on pasture in our paddocks. ... Raising free range pigs on pasture also means that the sows live their entire lives outdoors and give birth outside while being provided... protection from the elements and predators. In addition to this we do not feed our pigs any grain instead they grow to size on a diet of pasture, apples and a legumes. Animal welfare is critical to how we farm and our livestock is treated with respect and kindness to insure they live happy healthy lives. We will have our full range of pork(and some cuts you may not have seen like our T-Bone chop) at the markets this Saturday so come and say hallo to Luke, Melissa and Bjarke and try something truly yummy.

We grow our Beef and Pork on our farm applying sustainable/organic principles so it will be here today, tomorrow and in the future for your family to enjoy. We then harvest it at our local abattoir before hanging it to maximise tenderness. Once this is completed it is transported to our local butcher shop where we break it down and package it before delivering it direct to your home. This is all done within a 50km radius of our farm. From our family to yours local food equals true food security.

10.01.2022 Harvest Launceston Farmgate Market Hobart As Farmers it is important to not only raise animals in an ethical, natural and sustainable way but also make sure we have a diversity of species so as to ensure the overall longevity and health of animals over generations. It should not just be about profit at all costs nor the simplest or easiest way of doing something. It should be about producing nutritious, delicious natural food working in partnership with nature. At Oldway Farm... we raise Large Black pigs which are the rarest domestic pig breed in the world. They are great animals but grow slowly and put on a little extra fat which is perfect for pigs that live outside their whole lives. The mothers share looking after their young and have a great temperament. Our pigs are born outside and spend there lives outside eating legumes, apples, pears and nut meal. Pigs that are allowed to be pigs are simply better. Please see attached our latest addition to the farmsee you at the markets this weekend.

06.01.2022 Farm Gate Market Harvest Launceston As a part of our regenerative farming practices we move our cattle daily. As a result of this you get a significant benefit over traditional grazing where the ground is able to rest. This then leads to healthier grass that has better coverage and a significant increase in carbon sequestration. In addition to this it keeps the cattle very healthy and happy because cattle dont like to stay in one place for very long, so by mimicking what the...y would do in nature we preserve the health of our cattle and increase the health of our soil. It also gives us a good cover of natural fertiliser and prevents the need for using drenches as the cattle do not graze over their own manure as you can see from the photos taken yesterday. Happy healthy livestock that looks after the Earth for generations to come.

04.01.2022 Harvest Launceston Farmgate Market Hobart The changing seasons is something to be celebrated as it creates a natural difference to be enjoyed. As the weather changes, plants change, too, and animals change their behaviour to suit the weather. Winter is the perfect time to get cosy and enjoy slow cooked foods with family in front of a fireplace. It is also the time when we get the most rain which replenishes our underground water reserves.... Spring brings new life as mother earth wakes up with everything above the ground taking off be it plant or animals. That's why this gorgeous season brings us the ideal temperatures to pursue cool outdoor activities and still enjoy comfy evenings curled up in a fluffy blanket. Summer see’s rising temperatures, the hay season and an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables. It is also the chance to get the BBQ going and enjoy the company of family and friends. Autumn sees a blaze of colour changes as trees turn a bright orange/red and then brown as leaves drop to the ground. It is also the weaning season for our cattle and a great time to break out the jackets, coats, boots, scarves and hats in preparation for the change in season.
