24.01.2022 Last Thursday we did another experiment to end our week of colour. Some of the older children helped me grate crayons, we divided them by colour and put them into separate jars. Then I sat down with the children and asked them what crayons were made of, the children were able to tell me that they were made from wax (some of the children thought I was referring to ear wax so this lead to another discussion about where wax comes from). I then asked them what other things were m...ade of wax - they suggested candles, I asked them what happens to candles when they get hot - they were able to tell me that they melt. At this point one of the older children told us a story about how she had gotten into a hot car and had sat on a crayon and how it was soft and squishy.\We then watched a short video on how crayons were made, we could see that the wax starts out quite solid and then melted down, colour and other things are added and then it is poured into moulds and cooled using cold water. After the movie had finished I showed all of the children the grated crayons, and showed them how I grated them. I then explained that we would go outside and put the shavings onto paper to see if they would melt onto the paper. We left the paper and crayons outside as it was supposed to reach 30 degrees that day. Unfortunately the wind picked up and the weights that we had used werent strong enough to hold down the paper and most of the crayon shavings blew off. With the shavings that we had left over we arranged them onto a piece of baking paper and put them into the oven, and created a multicoloured piece of crayon that the children could pick up and observe. If we were to do this experiment again I would do it in the oven set on low, on paper to get a better result, that the children could have then taken home to talk about with their families. This experiment focused EYLF Outcome 4.2 See more

22.01.2022 Such a chilly morning. Warming up by running through todays obstacle course.
22.01.2022 Today outside play involved one of the children pretending to fish with a long stick, she then started to break the stick into pieces so that the other children could also pretend to fish. From here the children started to play with their sticks in the water and we started to explore which objects floated and which sunk. We found out that the flowers and leaves floated on our muddy puddle!
21.01.2022 Collecting leaves, washing them and final product Rooooaarr!!!
21.01.2022 So today we tried something a little different, a subtractive process. I did one of these previous to sitting down with the children. I asked them what I had used and asked them to guess. They worked out that I had used crayons, and guessed that I had used paint or dirt to get the white lines. I then explained that I had used tape and had coloured over it then peeled it off once I was finished. We then sat down together to see what we could create ourselves. This activity focused on learning outcome 4 (Children are confident and involved learners) 4.2 - Children develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, enquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating.

17.01.2022 So this weeks topic is COLOUR!!! Today we read Mix It Up by Herve Tullet. This book encourages the children to smudge, rub and shake colours together. We had to guess what the outcome would be if we mixed two colours together, for example blue and yellow. This yielded mixed responses, but i could see that the children were engaged and really wanted to get it right. After reading the book we went outside and filled up snap lock bags with two different coloured paints, the chil...dren then had to rub and shake the two colours together to see what colours they made. Whilst we were doing this the children were guessing and using the knowledge that they had learnt from the book to hypothesise the resulting colour. We then took a more tactile approach and put blobs of paint directly on the table, and we had a lovely time making a big mess of colour. We then added white (just as the book does) to see what would happen, and then we added black. The children were able to transfer and adapt what they had learnt from one context to another. Great job everyone. See more
