25.01.2022 The feast day of Australias first Saint, St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop) is celebrated on August 8. This feast day is significant in the religious life of our school as our school was established in 1952 in the Josephite tradition. Mary MacKillop founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart with Fr Julian Tennison-Woods. The sisters lived at Moorooka and travelled to Sunnybank each day by train. This year, to celebrate this feast day, the students will learn our new school song, participate in a Mary MacKillop related activity with a buddy class, join in an online school Mass in the afternoon and receive an ice block on Tuesday 11 August.

23.01.2022 After an interrupted Term 2 it is lovely to see routine and normality back at school. This term we have recommenced our Learning Walks and Talks. The purpose of these is to better understand classroom practice, build a common language, ask teachers reflective questions about practice, ask students 5 questions to determine their understanding and to give constructive feedback to formulate a plan for next steps in building teacher and student impact.

20.01.2022 In recent weeks, all students in Music classes have been revising time and rhythm and have applied their knowledge and understanding of rhythmic concepts in practical ways by playing instruments. The element of melody has also been explored with aural exercises, written recognition of melodic concepts and practical implementation of melodies on glockenspiels. Years 5 and 6 have been learning to read and play well known melodies such as "Drunken Sailor" (Year 5) and Beethovens "Ode to Joy" (Year 6); Year 3 has been writing Question and Answer melodies and playing these; Prep to Year 2 students have been learning to play simple tunes. All students have been taught the importance of playing with correct technique.

13.01.2022 Today we welcomed to Our Lady of Lourdes, Mrs Amanda Steer and Mrs Debra Evans, Education Officers Curriculum from Brisbane Catholic Education who met with a small group of parents this morning to discuss Brisbane Catholic Education initiatives around Progressive Reporting. Mrs Steer and Mrs Evans also participated in a Student Voice session with our Year 5 students to hear about and discuss how students learn and gather feedback. At Our Lady of Lourdes, we acknowledge tha...t students have unique perspectives on learning, teaching and schooling, and should have the opportunity to actively shape their own education. Some great ideas from both parents and students came forward this morning as Brisbane Catholic Education investigates alternatives to the traditional school report as a way of communicating the progress students make in their learning.

09.01.2022 Contemporary school libraries are no longer just about books. Although reading and literacy still play an important role, libraries are a hub of new technologies, creation and student collaboration. Libraries also play a role in enhancing student wellbeing, through providing a safe space for students to gather and have fun. Plenty of fun was had recently with the Lego Masters challenge held during lunch times over the last fortnight in the Library. It was great to see the creativity, skill and teamwork on display from the students who entered. It was a tough decision for the judging panel. Winners were notified in the last newsletter.

07.01.2022 Some grades are making simple animations this semester in their Art classes. Lego mini figures are ideal for this task. If you have any Lego mini figures that you no longer need, the Art Room would happily give them a new productive home.

07.01.2022 "With even toddlers using social media tools and technology, it is vital for schools, libraries, communities and parents to work to protect our most vulnerable from violence and exploitation. Digital safety is one of the most important child protection issues of our time. Our children are digital learners and explorers before they can even read, and parents are their first teachers." - alia.org.au Classes will be discussing different aspects of eSafety this week. We will share some ideas throughout the week, for you to start conversations with your children about their eSafety.
