08.01.2022 DIY Herbalism :: Flower Essences A flower essence is a solar water infusion of the flowering part of a plant. Flower essences are a beautiful way to connect ...with the subtle medicine and magic of Nature. What you need :: ~ One medium size glass bowl ~ One large, clean, dark glass bottle ~ One dropper bottle ~ Pure spring or rain water ~ Good quality brandy What to do :: 1. Choose which flower you would like to use ~ this could be based on the healing properties of that flower, or simply a flower that calls you. Only harvest flowers which you know are safe to use internally. 2. Harvest your flower ~ Harvest your flower on a clear, sunny day when there are no clouds in the sky. It is important when harvesting your flower essence that you don’t touch the flower itself. This is so your energy does not transfer to the flower. The easiest way is to use a leaf from the same plant to cover your fingers. Be sure the plant you pick is organically grown. If you are wildcrafting, makes sure the flower is not exposed to pollutants such as car fumes. Choose fresh, vibrant blossoms, and only pick a few blossoms from each plant. 3. Prepare the liquid ~ Fill a glass bowl with spring or rain water. Place the flowers on top if the water in the bowl until the entire surface is covered. Place your bowl in the direct sunlight where no shadows will cross it (not even yours) for three to four hours. The essence of the flowers will infuse in the water through the energy of the sun. 4. After three to four hours, skim the flowers off the water using a leaf from the plant if possible. The water left in the bowl is called the ‘mother essence’. Pour this into a clean, dark glass bottle. Fill the bottle halfway with mother essence and halfway with brandy. The brandy preserves the infusion, and anchors the subtle vibrations in the water. Label the bottle. 5. The ‘mother essence’ should never be consumed directly, and needs to be diluted for use! To dilute it, place two to ten drops in a 25 - 30ml dropper bottle and fill the remainder with half brandy and half spring or rain water. This is called a ‘stock’ bottle. From this bottle, take two to four drops under the tongue up to seven times a day, as needed. Making a flower essence is a beautiful ritual ~ have you ever made one yourself?

In modern practice, it's often used as a form of exercise - separated from its traditional spiritual roots. It is often part of disease prevention and management programs, such as stress-reduction courses for people with high blood pressures and heart disease.
