22.01.2022 Today we bring you the 20th episode of the Ask the STN video series. In this episode, Jan shares her tips on how to make sure you have applied an Omnigon Support Belt appropriately to your abdomen. - It is best to apply your belt whilst lying down - The Velcro is best applied on the opposite side to where your stoma is - The belt needs to come above your stoma pouch and just to the edge or below your pouch so that you are not constricting the outflow of your stoma... - Try sitting up in case you need to adjust your belt to cater for any variation in measurement between your hips and waist - You should be able to easily pass your hand between your belt and stoma pouch to check that you are not going to obstruct the outflow of your stoma - In a standing position, check that the belt is comfortable in the hips and you are getting full support in the abdominal area If you need guidance on managing your stoma or are interested in our Support Garment range, please feel free to contact our team of STNs or visit our website today! 22.01.2022 Thank you for joining us today on this beautiful Tuesday afternoon for the 21st episode of the Ask the STN video series. In this episode, Jan shares her tips to help you get a good night’s sleep whilst living with a stoma. Some of her tips include: - Ileostomates should not eat or drink before bed (try 2-4 hours prior to your bed time)... - Ileostomates might need to get up 1-2 times a night to empty pouch. Set an alarm to empty pouch if you think you might forget - Urostomates should wear a night drainage bag to avoid getting up throughout the night to empty pouch - Try sleeping on your back or side (opposite side to stoma) with a pillow for extra support - If you were a tummy sleeper, you might need to retrain yourself to sleep in a different position If you need guidance on managing your stoma or have other stoma issues, our team of STNS are happy to help you. 21.01.2022 The year is flying and as always Maryjane, (graphic designer, illustrator and ostomate) joins us to share her thought for the month. MJs perspective on living with a stoma is always honest and authentic but this months in particular is a real eye opener highlighting how her ostomy is a second chance at life "There was a UK news story recently: a judge ruled that a seriously ill 30 year old man with ongoing bowel issues should be allowed to die, rather than live ...with a stoma. It made my heart break a little to think that someone would rather end their life than live with a bag. I cant judge his decision as I dont know his full story or background. But it makes me think how incredibly important it is to focus on mental health alongside managing an ostomy or IBD conditions. And continue to raise positive awareness and reduce the stigma about life with a bag. When I was leading up to my own ostomy surgery, I felt like failure: I felt helpless, I couldnt manage my IBD or trust my body. Surgery was a drastic last resort. But I did my research and was inspired by other ostomates online. I saw how they thrived and felt I could do the same. My mindset was positive going in and it made a world of difference. Im not going to lie - waking up in hospital with an ostomy bag is a shock even when your prepared for it! Its a surreal thing to look down and discover your new way of living. But those initial emotions were soon replaced by gratitude, feeling free, happiness, curiosity and excitement. It become a life changing and life saving moment for me. I had no idea what to expect, but an ostomy was better than I could imagine. As an ostomate Im free from IBD and can focus on enjoying Life 2.0 - I just wish I did it sooner! Sending hugs to anyone struggling with their ostomy today " Watch this space for more posts like this and follow MJ on Instagram @emjayuc https://www.instagram.com/emjayuc/?hl=en #ulcerativecolitis #ibd #ibdawareness #ibdwarrior #crohnsdisease #crohnsandcolitis #invisibleillness #spoonielife #autoimmunedisease #chronicillness #ostomate #ostomyawareness #ostomylife #ileostomy #healthadvocate #wellbeingwarrior #ostomia #chronicillnesswarrior #mentalhealthawareness #noteverydisabilityisvisible #nocolonstillrollin #ostomy #ibdlife #stomastigma #patientadvocate #removethestigma #colectomy #stoma #ileostomate

21.01.2022 Did you know this week is Wound Awareness Week? Nearly half-a-million Australians suffer from chronic wounds each year, with most of those caused by pressure injuries. Minor wounds, such as cuts and scrapes, will usually heal on their own with good wound hygiene and attention. It is the chronic wounds that resist treatment and are slow to heal that pose the greatest risk. From 17 - 23 August 2020 Wound Awareness Week 2020 will take place with the aim to spread awareness of w...hat wounds are, who is at risk, what someone should do if they have a wound that wont heal. Join us in supporting #WoundAwarenessWeek and stay informed of the latest treatment and advice by visiting http://www.woundaware.com.au/about-wound-awareness-week/ Wounds Australia #WoundAware

19.01.2022 The year has certainly flown and here we are already in June. I try to practice gratitude everyday, especially for my ostomy. Even though my bag kept me up half the night (3 empties - frustrating ) I got to enjoy a long, safe walk in the sunshine today with no need for th...e bathroom and no pain. Im grateful for that. . 18.01.2022 MJ (graphic designer, illustrator and former ostomate) join us today to share her thought on how saying farewell to her bowel brought her freedom "Freedom is saying good bye bowel, hello ostomy Facing surgery to remove your bowel can be scary - you’re about to step into the unknown. When I said goodbye to my UC flaring colon back in 2017, I didn’t know what to expect about ostomy life.... Turns out having a total colectomy and gaining an ileostomy was the best thing I ever did! I had freedom back in my life again - no more medications, toilet anxiety or major diet restrictions. I welcomed control and trust of my body again. I could now focus on living life and not just surviving or managing my disease. An ostomy can bring so much freedom! Even on the bad days (leaks/skin issues), focus on the positives and it can help make it a little easier. Share below if your ostomy gave you freedom too " To see more posts like this, watch this space and follow MJ on Instagram @emjayuc https://www.instagram.com/emjayuc/?hl=en #ulcerativecolitis #ibd #ibdawareness #ibdwarrior #crohnsdisease #crohnsandcolitis #invisibleillness #chronicillness #ostomate #ostomyawareness #ostomylife #ileostomy #healthadvocate #wellbeingwarrior #ostomia #chronicillnesswarrior #nocolonclub #noteverydisabilityisvisible #nocolonstillrollin #ostomy #patientadvocate #stoma #ileostomate #ostomybag #jpouch #jpouchlife #ibdlife #ibdsuperhero #girlswithguts #positivemindsetdaily See more

17.01.2022 As part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month a highlight is Red Apple Day, which happens to be today 17th June 2020, when Australians are encouraged to support the vital work of Bowel Cancer Australia. Bowel Cancer Australias apple logo is symbolic of the charitys bowel cancer message: bowel cancer is treatable and beatable if detected early. If detected early and removed, the worm is unable to continue affecting the apple or the health of the tree. Its the same with people. If bowel cancer is detected early it can be successfully treated, which means patients and their families can continue to enjoy a healthy life. 11.01.2022 Its the start of another month and that means another new post coming your way from Maryjane, (graphic designer, illustrator and ostomate) who joins us today to share why you are not a burden . "I saw @billieandersonxs recent post and was inspired to draw this. Its a gentle reminder that you and your illness or disability, no matter what form it comes in, are not a burden on someone youre in a relationship with (or future partners either!) . The right ...person accepts you for who you are, flaws and all. When I first met my husband, my UC was under control. On our first overseas trip together: my UC flared with a vengeance on day 1 (thank god I packed pred) and he very quickly learnt about my "condition". But he provided nothing but love, support and patience and has done ever since. Might be worth noting we also got engaged on that trip, so it was a memorable one! . To anyone who may feel theyre a burden, always remember its your illness thats unreliable, not you. Be kind to yourself and know that it is not your fault - youre not a burden. You are loved!" .
