25.01.2022 This is a post from one of my teachers @ The Practice in Bali have a read...its sooooo true Here in Bali it’s usually easy to forget what’s happening in the rest of the world. Even so, the chaos unfolding around the world is palpable, even here. Uncertainty is never easy and on a scale as large as this, with such far reaching social and economic implications, I understand the fear. .... I hold this in my awareness and, at the same time, I hold something else. . Bali is now very quiet. Most non-residents have left and there are now restrictions on those seeking to enter the country (as is true everywhere). Yesterday, riding my scooter, the roads were as quiet as I’ve seen them in years and I caught myself sighing with relief. It feels like the island is exhaling too. Mother Nature, like us has been groaning under the weight of unsustainable growth. We can burn the candle at both ends for so long before we burn out. This is as true for the collective, as it is true for the individual. . And now we’ve been forced to stop. . Ayurveda says that dis-ease is nature’s way of forcing us to slow down, to rest, and remember who we are. Now we are being given the opportunity to strip everything away. . Beneath your clothes, without your job, without your usual distractions, who are you? I have no doubt this feels like a confronting contemplation at a time when, for many, it’s not rhetorical. . And yet, I can’t help but hope that, on the other side of this, we can look back and see it as a turning point; a moment where Mother Nature had a chance to breathe and where she, and we, were able to regenerate. . 22.01.2022 This is the purpose of retraining our brain (or consciousness) not to react...the purpose of the difficult poses in yoga (difficult by way of strength, breathwork, stillness) is controlled provocation. Purposefully agitating the mind to retrain it to not react. Our brain instinctively yet unconsciously, engages the sympathetic nervous system in moments of stress or fear. A lot of the time we are not in danger, therefore we can remain calm when we learn to be conscious
