25.01.2022 Did you know this year will be 48th Lightning Ridge Opal Festival! The History of the Lightning Ridge Opal Festival In 1971, local miner Derek Foster dreamt up ...the idea to celebrate the culture and character of opal mining and Lightning Ridge by means of a Festival. Dereks wife Hazel put together a program of activities and the Lightning Ridge Opal Festival was born. In its hey-day, the Festival included a Float Parade down Opal Street, Wheel Barrow Races and Shovelling Competition, novelty events and plenty of entertainment. 1972 saw the first Opal Queen Ball and the Festival donated $2,000 to the Bush Nurse Association. In the eighties the Opal Festival became a hallmark event with locals, attracting hundreds of people to the social activities. The Opal Queen was predominately themed with aspiring locals stepping up to provide celebrity entertainment such as Michael Jackson, Cindy Lauper and Dr Who. In 1985, the Committee decided to launch the Opal & Gem Expo to promote opal and attract tourists to the town, on what was the slowest weekend for tourism for the year. The opal and gem trade show was set up in the car park of the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club and the event attracted hundreds of miners, jewellers, wholesalers and opal trade from all over Australia. In 2000, the International Opal Jewellery Design Awards Association (IOJDAA) was formed to showcase the stunning and innovative use of opal by jewellery designers around the world. In 2001, they launched the International Opal Jewellery Design Awards which is now a biannual event. Today the Lightning Ridge Opal Festival is a 4 day event which begins on the last Wednesday in July each year. The Opal Festival includes the Opal Queen Ball, Opal & Gem Expo, IOJDAA Trade Show, and IOJDAA Jewellery Competition is held biannually. The event attracts approximately 4,000 people over the four days, and the event is the largest on the Australian opal events circuit. The Opal Festival is run by the Opal & Gem Festival Committee and is a not for profit event with approximately 15% of profit is donated back into the local community. See more

25.01.2022 First time on the road for this converted horse float. The proud owner used all recycled products to fit it out. The twin French doors are a nice touch! Well done and have fun.

24.01.2022 From us to you, here's to the new year may it be a vast improvement on the one we are saying goodbye to.

24.01.2022 The Lightning Ridge Bore Baths have re opened and we locals have had it all to ourselves for the last two weeks which was very different to normal but nice!! From Monday the Opal is open for tourists....yaa . Social distancing and restrictions will apply to help keep us safe. Sorry Queenslanders you miss out for the time being See you all soon.... Mark, Jacque and Staff. See more

23.01.2022 Wishful Thinking or does this guest know something I dont.

23.01.2022 What an amazing treasure trove Lightning Ridge is...

23.01.2022 We are saddened that our season start has been cancelled but be sure that we will be here whenever we are all able to holiday again. In the interim we have special rates (and lots of space) for those who need a place to park up and stay a while. Stay safe everyone

22.01.2022 The Artesian Bore Baths are just a 2 minute walk from the Opal Caravan Park. The locals make you feel very welcome and don't mind a chat.

22.01.2022 Well the NSW government has today got in sinc with the other states and announced that Caravan Parks can accomodate workers. Hallelujah to that. We could put in down to Facebook power but a lot of hard work was done behind the scenes. Stay safe everyone, weve got a ways to go yet on this virus.

22.01.2022 We went out at 4:00 this morning and were impressed. Definitely going again tomorrow.

21.01.2022 Freds got it right visiting Lightning Ridge as well as those other couple of ok places....

21.01.2022 It has been a long time on the wish list but today we put the finishing touches to our brand new dog off leash area. With about half a hectare to run around in our four legged friends are in for a really good time.

18.01.2022 Have a safe and happy Christmas everyone. May all your hopes and dreams come true.

18.01.2022 We will commemorate a very different dawn service this year but giving thanks is not about where it's about how. Lest we forget.

18.01.2022 We are all doing our best to comply with the Coronavirus regulations and keep everyone safe, but I need to have a vent here. In NSW, Caravan Parks, including cabins are shut down, except for any permanents. but for motels its business as usual. I totally agree with keeping tourist caravaners and campers away at this time. Nurses have tried to stay with us as we have fully self contained cabins with cooking facilities as opposed to motels, that do not have these facilities. ... That means the only food the nurses can have is take away. I am disgusted that such dedicated people will have to live like this for weeks at a time, while theyre working extra long hours to keep us well. Also, NSW is the only eastern state that doesnt allow workers to stay in Caravan Parks at present. In regional areas like ours, these workers are crucial in keeping our towns ticking along. I feel much better now thanks, and hope some common sense will surface. Mark.

14.01.2022 Looking for something to do over Easter, we always enjoy this event.

14.01.2022 Get in early or get in late, this is a spectacular prize!!

12.01.2022 We haven’t got any people guests at the Opal this long weekend but we do have lots of frogs. Jacque counted 26 in this tree. There are little frogs jumping everywhere, I have never seen this in the 10 years of being here.

11.01.2022 Are you coming??? https://www.facebook.com/LightningRidgeEasterFestival/videos/652662465564352/

10.01.2022 The drought stricken farmers between Hebel & Dirranbandi are embracing Christmas with their farm inspired creations. They even light up at night. The most poignant for me are theCandy Canes with the roo carcass in the foreground.

10.01.2022 Wishing all our great mates out there a bloomin' awesome Australia Day 2020. Here's to an amazing year

10.01.2022 We had a racing pidgeon release at the Park this morning. Over six hundred birds who will take about six hours to cover the 600 plus kilometers from here to their homes in Newcastle. What a sight!!! We have a repeat event next Saturday if you happen to be staying with us then.

08.01.2022 Bring on Easter!!!

08.01.2022 If you come across these guys in your travels dig deep, they are doing an amazing job fundraising for Make-a-Wish foundation.

05.01.2022 Have a listen to Roothy's chat with Michelle Hanson from Top Parks. PS there are definitely no trams at the Opal....

04.01.2022 No cabins left but we do have a few powered sites. See you here!!!

03.01.2022 This is the closed border at Hebel Qld. and just 80 km from the Opal Caravan Park. When the politicians finish playing politics and open the border we welcome Queenslanders to come visit us. The very cold Victorians are most welcome too. We have had interstate people asking if they will be welcome. HELL YES, weve missed you all!!

02.01.2022 Quiet here this morning. We are missing every single one of you and are looking forward to seeing you again soon. Look after yourselves until then.

02.01.2022 It is with great sadness, that we announce the cancellation of the 2020 Lightning Ridge Opal Festival. The Lightning Ridge Opal Festival has become a large eve...nt and due to its size requires a significant amount of planning. With border restrictions still in place and no announcement or approval for holding large-scale events, we do not believe that we will be able to deliver this years event to our usual scale and standard. The Festival is a major economic driver for Lightning Ridge and our region. We encourage anyone who had planned to visit Lightning Ridge in the next coming months to do so. Lightning Ridge is a wonderful town to explore and we are ready to welcome visitors. We are now planning the 2021 Festival and hope that it can be bigger and better than ever! SAVE THE DATE: 28TH-31ST JULY 2021 Lightning Ridge Opal Festival Committee

02.01.2022 Happy New Year to all our amazing friends out there. May 2019 be your very best year yet!!!!

02.01.2022 Sunset at the Opal tonight. It was so red it made the gravel look redder..

01.01.2022 Have a great Australia Day long weekend everyone. Stay safe and keep hydrated out there.
