25.01.2022 Yesterday the government announced that there would be free childcare from Monday 6th April until 30th June. As a centre we are looking at the finer details and how that will impact individual families and/or meet their needs. We will be contacting all families individually to discuss what this means for them hopefully today, but may need to add more information as we receive it. Our priority will be to address current needs and situations with existing families, before taking on new families, however it is possible that this may also occur. We will keep everyone informed.

25.01.2022 Last Thursday night we said farewell to our 9 kindy graduates at our Family Evening and end of year celebrations. A big thank you to Mt Pleasant Butchers for donating sausages for our sausage sizzle and our community members who helped cook them and who gave our yard a tidy up ready for the night.

24.01.2022 Today the Adelaide Hills Council unveiled a bench and plaque in memory of the pioneer families in Birdwood, and some of Open Arms Community Child Care children were there to witness it. Even more special, they were chosen to be the first ones to sit on it after the unveiling and had their photo taken with the people who spoke about the reason we have the bench and the man who made it! And they saw locals they recognised too. What a great way to strengthen our connection with our community!

08.01.2022 The health and safety of our children is our highest priority. We are following the recommendations of the Health authorities in seeking to protect children from the risk of COVID -19. The relevant government committee AHPPC has recently released new recommendations and rules for centres such as ours. Open Arms will be following the recommendations and rules, with most of the recommendations are already in place. You will notice that the health authorities have decided that ...from 1 May, visitors will not be permitted to enter the Centre if they have not been vaccinated against influenza. Visitors includes parents and caregivers. If you havent been vaccinated by 1 May and wish to come into our centre, please speak to one of our staff and we will discuss with you alternative arrangements. Health authorities have also decided that visitors with fever or symptoms of acute respiratory infection (e.g. cough, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath) symptoms are not permitted to enter the Centre. This applies immediately. Consistent with the recommendations, unwell children are not to attend the Centre. You will also notice that health authorities are recommending influenza vaccination for children and parents. If you have any questions about these requirements and recommendations, please do not hesitate to speak to staff. https://www.health.gov.au//australian-health-protection-pr

07.01.2022 We have just updated and relaunched our website.... http://openarms.net.au. Please have a look and share with anyone you think might be interested as we are currently taking bookings for childcare in 2020 and have a few spaces left for our kindy program next year.

06.01.2022 For those who arent aware, Open Arms Community Child Care Centre in Birdwood is able to offer free childcare to children from birth to 13 years old for up to 13 weeks (or more in some circumstances) to any family who has suffered temporary financial hardship, which includes temporary loss of income, damage to property etc, through Government funding and support. Open Arms is an established, fully catered child care centre, and can provide a long term, consistent environmen...t for children while the adults in their lives attend to the countless things they need to following the impact of the bushfires in our area. This also provides children a chance to take a break from the situations which surround them, and play while being supported by other children and staff. Our fully qualified staff have spent the past 6 months training in the area of how trauma impacts children so have the skills to assist children at this particularly difficult time. Our centre is open 6:30am to 6:30pm weekdays, but has a range of flexible booking options to allow for a few hours up to longer days if required, on either a casual or regular basis for either short or longer term. Please pass this information onto any families who may need support through this opportunity. Contact can be made by calling the centre on 85685011 See more

02.01.2022 Open Arms is proud to be a part of this exciting pilot project since its inception in 2018. Early Learning STEM Australia (ELSA) is a play-based digital learning program for children in preschool to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). ELSA allows children to play, experiment and make sense of the world around them which is part of STEM, and also part of being a child. ELSAs STEM Practices encourage children to ask questions, make predictions, experiment, and reflect on what happened and why. #elsastem #openarmscccc #birdwoodchildcare #birdwoodkindy #birdwoodsa #childcare #adelaidehills #earlychildhoodeducation #stem #stemeducation

01.01.2022 For those wondering about whether child care is still open - yes we are, and we are continuing to work with families to support them to do whatever they need to do in their individual situations. We appreciate the needs of those self-isolating, and those who need us to offer consistency in the education and care of their children while they continue to work. For those who have not already see it, this came out yesterday from the Minister for Education ....... MEDIA RELEASE ... 26 March 2020 Statement on child care The current expert medical advice is that the child care sector should remain open except where individual services have been directed to close by health authorities. The Government is aware of the challenges facing the Child Care sector because of reduced attendance. I am working with the sector to minimise the impact of COVID-19, and we already have implemented additional support arrangements. To support the sector, we have increased the number of days, up to 62, that a child care service will continue to receive the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) when a child is absent from care. The CCS covers up to 85 per cent of the daily costs of a childs care. Grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 are available for child care providers through the Community Child Care Special Circumstances Fund to help cover business costs, including wages, to ensure services impacted by COVID-19 can continue to operate. Families with financial difficulty can apply for funding through the ACCS (temporary financial hardship fund) to cover child care gap fees. One of the key ways all governments can support the sector is through regulatory relief and this is on the agenda for Education Council tomorrow. We continue to assess the issues facing the sector and we will continue to work with them to manage the impact of the coronavirus. I will have more to say on this in the coming days. THE HON DAN TEHAN MP Minister for Education
