24.01.2022 Dona Maria spent 67 years living with an unrepaired cleft lip. While she undoubtedly faced challenges and overcame obstacles because of her cleft, Dona Maria consistently dreamt of one thing. Though seen by many as a simple pleasure, what she wished for most was to wear lipstick. During an Operation Smile Brazil medical mission, Dona Maria passed her health evaluation and underwent her long-awaited surgery. After allowing her lip to properly heal from surgery, Dona Maria could finally live out her dream of putting on red lipstick for the first time in her life. #cleftawarness #charity #brazil #charitywork #safesurgery #surgery

20.01.2022 This week, we have celebrated stories and art from Anna Weston, a long-time volunteer with Operation Smile. In talking about Operation Smile international missions (pre-COVID-19), Anna said, "It still surprises me how volunteers can come together from all around the globe, and work as a fully operational team within a single day. Being part of Operation Smile is truly like having an extended family. We work together, support each other, learn from each other, and share a comm...on goal to help those in need." We thank Anna for her years of service at Operation Smile, and for the countless lives that she has changed as an experienced Speech Pathologist. You can purchase Anna's art through her website, here: https://www.annaweston.com.au/shop

20.01.2022 Right now in Oujda, Morocco, volunteers representing 25 countries are making Operation Smile history as they begin our FIRST international medical mission comprised entirely of female volunteers!! These women are powerful role models who can mentor and empower the next generation of health care workers. Our team of skilled women in Morocco will not only deliver safe surgeries and care to patients living with cleft conditions, they will impact the health systems where ...we work by engaging in education opportunities. With the cleft surgery training sessions and dental nasoalveolar molding and simulation workshops, female physicians will receive learning opportunities that might not otherwise have been available to them. 19.01.2022 This week, Australian nurses Carmel and Claire are participating in a special Orthognathic mission. Patients born with cleft lip and cleft palate undergo several corrective surgical procedures during their life. One of these surgeries is orthognathic surgery, Orthos means straighten and Gnathos means jaw in Greek. Orthognathic surgery corrects the position of the jaw to achieve adequate dental occlusion and facial aesthetics. This facilitates chewing and improves speech as well as breathing in some instances.

19.01.2022 Congratulations to the winners of our Care Package giveaway... Barbara Ann and her nominated #healthhero , Tina Ting-Ting Chen! Thank you for everything that you are doing during this tumultuous time. We are so grateful to our #healthheroes all over the world.

19.01.2022 Today we are celebrating International Nurses Day! Out of the 51 volunteer positions on Operation Smile international medical missions, 19 positions are filled by nurses. Currently, nurses represent 36% of our medical volunteers, globally. We would like to thank all of our Nurses for their dedication to not only our organisation, but to the profession of nursing.

18.01.2022 "We screened approximately 300 people [TBC], (with) 28 surgeries yesterday and 30 scheduled for today." These are the words from one of our volunteers on our all-female Morocco mission, Katrina Adam. What an incredible effort by incredible women! We are so lucky to have such intelligent, compassionate, and dedicated medical staff at Operation Smile. These women are role models for the next generation of health care workers both in Morocco, and here at home.... Tag a woman in the comments who inspires YOU every day!

18.01.2022 Only 7 months old, Marianna had a Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate. Her Mum, Yerling travelled to Managua five times to go to an Operation Smile clinic where they taught her how to feed her baby. Each time she went, it was an all-day trip that drained the family’s small income. She had been waiting and waiting to hear the message that Operation Smile would finally be able to come to Esteli and operate on Marianna... 16.01.2022 This week, we are celebrating National Volunteer Week! National Volunteer Week (NVW) is the annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nations volunteers. Volunteers are the heart of Operation Smile, and are the reason we are able to achieve so much. A huge shoutout and thank you to all of our volunteers across Australia and New Zealand!

16.01.2022 Giving to charity doesn't only include monetary donations - giving comes in many forms such as volunteering! We are thankful to our 6000+ worldwide volunteers who donate their time and expertise to help us provide exceptional surgical care around the world. Dr Mark Lee, an Australian Plastic Surgeon has volunteered his time on six Operation Smile missions. "I love Operation Smile missions, working with Surgeons and others from all over the world. I’ve made some great friend...s. I have learnt some great practical surgical techniques and also had the satisfaction of teaching others what I know. I come back from all my missions with my soul restored. I don’t sweat the small stuff! It puts all those little setbacks in life into the big picture. Why get down about some trivial thing in my life or practice when you see what some people have to deal in the world that Operation Smile helps in. This is what I was made to do." #givingtuesdayaustralia #mygivingstory #volunteer

16.01.2022 At her first Operation Smile Ghana mission, Jocelyn was unable to be cleared for surgery because she was too underweight and showed signs of malnutrition. With... nutrition, I always say, If someone isnt well nourished, a lot of things dont go well, volunteer nutritionist Dede Kwadjo said. Making sure that someone is nutritionally adequate is a basis for good living. Cynthia, her adoptive mother, was able to become her primary caretaker after her biological father proved her health wasnt his top priority. For months, Cynthia made the 5-hour trip with her to Operation Smile Ghanas nutrition program. Finally, she grew strong enough to receive the life-changing operation she deserved. 15.01.2022 In May 2020, the first Operation Smile country to resume providing surgery was Vietnam. From May to September 2020, more than 500 patients have received cleft surgery at six Operation Smile Vietnam local missions! Volunteers and patients are closely following both Operation Smile and health ministry guidelines to reduce the risk of spreading the virus during missions, including mask-wearing, temperature screenings, socially distanced waiting areas and increased sanitation measures.

15.01.2022 This week, we are sharing stories and art from Anna Weston, a long-time volunteer with Operation Smile Australia. Anna has recently launched her website for @anna_weston_art , and will be donating 5% of all profits to Operation Smile. Please read below about Anna's piece 'The Arrival.' "Operation Smile missions are intense, busy, exhausting and worthwhile. So on returning home, I am always grateful to have access to beautiful natural surroundings. South East Queensland has stunning subtropical rainforests which are the ideal location to decompress... The painting 'The Arrival' is inspired by such experiences. I know that accessing such a place is not possible for everyone, and this gave me more impetus to paint. If nothing else, I hope that someone can imagine being inside of this scene - and takes a nice, long breath of fresh air. "

15.01.2022 How well do you know the origins of Operation Smile Australia? OSA was founded in 1999 by Dr. Richard Lewandowski, a Brisbane plastic, craniofacial and reconstructive surgeon, and his wife Sue, a physiotherapist. Dr. Lewandowski became involved with Operation Smile while studying at Eastern Virginian Medical School, in Virginia, USA. During this time, Dr. Lewandowski volunteered on medical missions to China, Colombia, Gaza, Kenya, Philippines and Russia. He was also i...nvolved in medical educational training sessions, and in the training of Operation Smile International Fellows. Upon his return to Australia, he and his wife Sue established Operation Smile Australia, dedicated to helping children from countries in neighbouring South-East Asia. They saw the need... and Operation Smile Australia was born! Since that time, we have grown our Operation Smile Australia family of volunteers and supporters, and completed free surgeries for those in need all around the world. . . . #operationsmile #operationsmileaustralia #cleftstrong #brisbane #nonforprofit #charity

13.01.2022 Happy New Year from the team at Operation Smile Australia!

13.01.2022 Clara was born with a severe cleft lip and cleft palate. Her mother didn’t dare to breastfeed her. She even refused to acknowledge Clara as her own child. Clara’s father, Dede, who accepted and loved Clara unconditionally, decided he would do everything he could to find a solution for his daughter. He wanted her to feel the love of others, instead of being feared and isolated. In 2016 during an Operation Smile mission in Antisrabe, Madagascar, Clara was cleared to receive sur...gery for her cleft lip. When we came home from the hospital after surgery, everybody in our village was amazed to see her, Dede says. She looked so different, like another person. I explained to them that it was thanks to Operation Smile. When our team met up with Clara eight months after surgery, they noticed she had a newfound sense of confidence. Clara wants to study to become a Doctor, so she can help other children born with cleft conditions.

12.01.2022 Having never met another person with a cleft condition before, Siham’s parents, Samira and Youssef, felt devastated and scared after seeing their baby girl for the first time. As Siham grew older, the intense social stigma surrounding cleft in the community caused her to endure painful bullying and mistreatment from people in her village. Children from school refused to let Siham sit next to them during class. Her parents often witnessed her come home crying and angry. S...iham loves to learn, but the torment and name calling at school became too much for her to bear. Deciding to not return to school, Siham rarely ventured outside the safety of her home. During an Operation Smile mission in Dakhla, Morocco, Siham was cleared to receive surgery. Siham, now 17 years old, walks to school free from fear. When she arrives to class, she is met with big smiles and hugs from her closest friends who invite her to sit with them. She loves to draw and enjoys studying French.

11.01.2022 Like many other organisations, Operation Smile Australia is affected by the progress of the Corona virus. Right now, it is difficult to carry out many of our international missions as we dont wish to spread the virus and risk the health of our patients and volunteers. Further, many of our volunteers are needed here, in the Australian health care system. We want to thank all of our donors, for continuing to support our work during these difficult times. Children who were ...born with cleft lip and cleft palate are already extremely vulnerable from birth, and during a pandemic like this, they will become even more non-prioritised. The help from our donors ensures that these children will not be forgotten, and that we can help them through their difficult situation as soon as possible. If you would like to, you can donate to further our efforts at this link: https://lnkd.in/geag-QT This is a period of fear for many, and we all need to take the time to care for our neighbours; both across the street and overseas.

09.01.2022 Research conducted by us and our partners was the spark that kindled our cook stove project. To dig a little deeper into the causes of cleft conditions, we team...ed up with the University of Southern California and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles in 2009 to conduct the International Family Study. As of 2020, the team collected more than 17,000 individual saliva samples representing more than 7,200 families, creating the largest and most diverse genetic repository of cleft samples globally. Findings to date reveal a potential relationship between maternal smoke inhalation from cooking over an open flame and an increased risk of having a child born with a cleft condition. 09.01.2022 In Italy, a country that was hard-hit by COVID-19, Operation Smile has resumed providing surgery and cleft care services at its three Smile House locations in Rome, Milan and Vicenza. Extensive safety measures are being used to protect patients, families and volunteers. These measures include COVID-19 testing, social distancing and specialised surgical helmets and equipment.

09.01.2022 Before becoming Operation Smile Morocco-Officials dedicated leader, Fouzia Mahmoudi was approached by our President and Co-Founder, Kathy Magee, with the idea ...to expand the global non-profit to Morocco. Kathy presented Fouzia with photos of children before and after receiving surgery, moving her to tears. I told her, Im so motivated to work with you, but believe me, we dont have those kids in Morocco. I have never seen them, Fouzia said. Despite her initial doubts, Kathy felt confident that Fouzia was the right person to lead the new foundation Morocco. The two women joined forces and with a small group of volunteers and launched a medical mission in the capital city of Rabat, determined to learn if there were children living in Morocco with unrepaired cleft conditions. They were absolutely stunned when more than 700 people arrived within the first three days. As hundreds of families came to the mission site seeking help for their children, Fouzia witnessed first-hand the devastating need in her country, which she once believed didnt exist. I went back to Kathy, and I told her, Theres really a need for Operation Smile here, and Im ready to do whatever I can do to put a foundation here in Morocco. Collaborating with Kathy and other executive leaders, Operation Smile Morocco was officially launched in 1999. Keep reading to learn more about the impact it has made in the country how it still helps families in need 20 years later http://bit.ly/2NCBwMX See more

08.01.2022 Since 2010, Lions Australia have been supporting Operation Smile Australia. We are thankful for their continued support! Kylie Merrett, Chairwoman of the Lions Australia Operation Smile Project has experienced first hand how Lions donations are being used when she attended a mission to the Philippines in 2017. To have the personal experience to witness first-hand how I can make a difference to a truly worthwhile cause has been life changing. It is heart-warming for me to now... have so much more enthusiasm to continue to raise money to help so many more children like the beautiful little friends I made in the Philippines. We are all helping to change these young lives. That makes me very proud." #givingtuesdayaustralia #mygivingstory #donorstory

07.01.2022 "The volunteer work I have done with Operation Smile fulfils all of the altruistic dreams I held as an idealistic medical student. It is truly phenomenal to be a member of a team composed of specialists from multiple countries, speaking numerous different languages, with varied cultural medical practices, yet who all come together in a resolved and highly coordinated manner to provide safe and life-changing surgery to those who most need it. These patients are some of the most vulnerable in the world due to poverty, lack of access to education, social isolation, ostracization, and absence of free and safe health care. I always leave a mission with a full heart, feeling like we have truly made a difference to peoples’ lives." #MyGivingStory #Givingtuesdayaustralia #volunteer

06.01.2022 #transformationtuesday Enok remembers being jeered, mocked, chased by packs of children and having people recoil at the sight of his cleft lip. Suffering from a severe bilateral cleft lip, Enok decided to seek help during an Operation Smile medical mission to Rwanda in 2013. Since Enok’s surgery, his life has irrevocably changed. Though his surgical scars are almost invisible to the naked eye, his emotional scars continue to heal as this soft-spoken man recalled the daily str...uggles he once faced. I walk to work from my home, and before the surgery, I would take all sorts of detours and creep through people’s gardens and farms so that I could avoid being seen, Enok explained as he walked through lush green vistas on his way home from the bakery at which he works. Children would either run away if they saw me or run behind shouting horrible things. But nowadays, I'm a normal person in the community. I meet people and they talk to me like they would someone who has been there the whole time. Now, seven years after receiving surgery, Enok has built a new and beautiful life for himself. He's fallen in love and created a family of his own. Today, Enok walks along the brighter path that lies ahead.

05.01.2022 Our medical volunteers have always gone above and beyond for our patients, prioritising the best possible care for every individual and their community. Our brave volunteers are now stepping up to face COVID-19 in the Australian and New Zealand healthcare system, and we feel so lucky to have such dedication shown by our #healthheroes. Please treat healthcare staff with kindness during this very stressful time.

04.01.2022 This National Volunteer Week, we are celebrating our medical volunteers as well as our Board of Directors, who so generously donate their time and expertise to Operation Smile Australia! 01.01.2022 Here at Operation Smile Australia, we are thankful every day for our team of wonderful volunteers.
