25.01.2022 Racing this weekend! How disappointing was the weather last weekend! We were all looking so much forward to be on the water thanks to RBYC. Vic weather tricked us again! For the ones that are not travelling to Sydney for Sail Sydney, there are few options in Melbourne.... In addition to the club racing, SYC is organising a massive OTB regatta. https://syc.com.au/kingston-sprint-series/ Enjoy your sailing next weekend!
24.01.2022 RYCV is hosting the Optimist State Championship from 6-8 March 2021. With 80-100 boats expected to compete across 2 race courses, we’re going to need all hands ...on deck! If you’re interested in helping out as part of the race management team on-water or on-shore, please contact Allicia Rae via email to [email protected]. All volunteers must have a working with children check, but these are simple and free to obtain. VIC International Optimist Dinghy Association

13.01.2022 Aidan places 1st and Callum 8th (and best 11yo) at the NSW State Championship at Middle Harbour Yacht Club, Sydney. Aidan took the win with a scorecard of: 1, ...1, 5, 1. Callum’s scorecard was: 5, 2, 16, 10. Day 1 saw a varying breeze of between 5 to 10 knots. The conditions around Middle Harbour with all the ferry traffic, keel boats and two other yacht clubs running sailing races and activities during the day makes it very difficult to lay a course. The wave conditions with all the traffic resembles a washing machine rather than predictable and consistent wave patterns. The surrounding cliffs of the shoreline make for very tricky wind patterns with sailors needing to be in the right place to gain important lifts off the bending wind from the foreshore. All fantastic conditions to challenge the young sailors The race officer set a large course with the open fleet doing an outer trapezoid gate close to the cliffs. I had volunteered to help out and found myself on the finish boat which was a very comfortable 28 foot power boat with comfortable lounge chairs and a sunshade. Aidan started the day in the first race leading the whole fleet around and was never headed and finished first place. Callum had a great race also coming in 5th. Race 2 saw Aidan again lead the fleet up to the top mark, the reach and the bottom gate, but then saw Callum pop out in front at the second top mark to take the lead. Callum had a decent lead going down the last run of about 15 boat lengths, however Aidan was slowly able to catch up and was just able to get the inside turning position around the last mark before the short reach to the finish with only two boats lengths separating them in the end. Race 3 saw the wind pick up slightly but both Aidan and Callum did not get a very good start, Aidan was about 15th around the first top mark with Callum a few places behind. Aidan was able to slowly make ground on the leaders and finished a strong race in 5th position, whereas Callum suffered in the turbulent winds of others sails and finished 16th. At day one Aidan was in first place and Callum in seventh place overall. Day 2 had the wind predicted to be approximately 5 to 7 knots from the west. When we made it out to the location of the course the wind was obviously much more than that and by the time the course was set, winds were well in excess of 20 knots. The intermediate fleet were sent in as there were many boats struggling and capsizing. Race 4 eventually got underway with the open fleet division more than half of the way around the course when a very large ferry split through the fleet at high speed just before the bottom gate mark. Aidan was second to the first windward mark but quickly overtook first position on the long reach and sailed to a comfortable win. The winds throughout the race were often gusting to 30 knots. Callum in Race 4 had an average start and was in approximately 20th position around the first mark. He fought hard and passed quite a few boats on the reach and then downwind and by the finish had got up to a very good 10th position. After the race 4 finished the race officer called off any further races for the day due to the very strong winds. A great event and a very welcoming club.
