24.01.2022 Lately some of my hives were arriving at a seasonal site for the first batch of pollen and honey in the year. Bees burst out of the hive after a couple of hours drive when the gates were open. 13.01.2022 Winter is nearly over. A number of wattle species have started blooming to further boost the brood with copious pollen. As usual around 10th August every year in Victoria south it’s a good time to have the first inspection prior to Spring. Th photo is what one of our 10-frame double-box overwintering hives with medium strength looks like. The honey frames have been reasonably consumed from the outer towards inner ones. Brood pattern are improving and being upsized towards 80%... of 3-4 frames. This is a good indication for Spring foraging. The stronger hives have been producing drones for 1-2 weeks. Considering 36 days to sexually mature, mating is expected to occur in early to mid September. 11.01.2022 Honey worker bees can hold their faeces for weeks in winter until a warm-air day (15 Celsius degrees above). What a beautiful day! The wintering bees in our #honeyfarm at #mountevelyn had brief cleansing flights. This is important for their health. However continuous warm sunny days may not be beneficial for them as they become more active. It will increase the honey consumption and jeopardise their longevity. 06.01.2022 For prior build-up of colonies in southern Victoria, bees are very excited for the manipulation etc. Certain actions must be taken in right order to assure strong colonies ready for melliferous season in Spring or earlier breeding. Health and strong brood must be present by the mid of July

06.01.2022 Picking up queen bees is a regular operation for queen bee breeders. It could be done for caging her, marking her, or clipping wings and etc. Sometimes I need to do it more than 60 times a day.
