25.01.2022 What a day, what a team! In our third and final group game we got done on the scoreboard to Chile (Aussie Chilenos who have played footy all their lives ) in a physical encounter that began with good ol fashion fisty cuffs. However the spirit of the game came through at the final whistle. Fortunately we still made the GF - and yes against Chile! This time around we were 2 players short on the bench due to injuries but still went toe to toe until the final whistle and only ...losing by 2 goals in front of family, friends and bumper crowds. For a bunch of rugby lads we did not behd. At the last tournament South Africa Lions lost all 3 games, so to make the GF and marginally miss out we can pat ourselves on the back. Led by legends of a captain and leader in Stehan and coach Brenden Freddo, these boys came together and played with South African gusto - because they give a damn about that flag. So for now we’ll chill out, get back to our sports we know and aim to build on this for the next tournament. Thanks to @aflinternational for having us. 20.01.2022 Heads up Apolgies for the essay! So theres some new restrictions set for hospitality venues as of yesterday Friday afternoon. We want to ensure that the health and safety of staff and other customers is important. ... Even though our venue is small, it packs a punch when at capacity inside to out. Basically in minutes and leading up to our busiest period of the week, our ability to seat patrons or park in the window or at the bench has been cut in half. What does this mean for you? If youre planning on visiting, we cant emphasise enough on booking a table in advance, otherwise its one in one out just like bars in the 2000s, so grab your bite and have a chat then bail if someones waiting. TAKEAWAY: Everything is take away. Health & safety is a high priority in our team at Ostrich & the Egg and understand that we as a team are following all health regulations to give you peace of mind when entering our venue. A reminder that we also have take away available, just ring ahead and well have it done ... For many of us who have migrated to Australia for all the wonders that it offers, we come from a place where security guards watch whilst waiting in cue for water collection in Cape Town, to mass farm murders inland or neighbourhood gang shoot outs as well has one of the highest HIV rates in the world. Its times like this where its important to stay calm, cautious and collected. To think of those around you, be supportive to those who are in need and just be a decent human being. Theres an old saying during tough times, its to vasbyt which essentially translates to bite down and hold on. Well be staying open and trading as usual and hope to see you soon. 19.01.2022 Where do we even start? What an amazing flag! Vibrant, colourful and if it could be, it would be full of flavour, much like South Africans. It's a shame, but during these unprecedented times, that flag will be coming down, the lights turned off and the door shut.... We're not opening tomorrow Tuesday 31 March. This past Sunday was our last day. We fought tooth and nail for those two weeks of restrictions, limited seating, then take away / delivery only and we actually survived. South Africans are known to put up a fight, but when your throat is being strangled tighter every week you'll eventually suffocate. Firstly a massive thank you to everyone who has graced our doors, whether from Day 1 or our last day. The South African product couldn't have done what it's done with out you. It's been a growing journey for the entire team from the start. From just doing the sweets and coffee to adding small bites, then full street food and braai parties with the limited infrastructure (nothing more than power to run an office). To put it in perspective, we were working with one oven, a fryer, a flat toaster and two burner plates to do all the orders / menu. Which is basically less than what a normal household would use to cook a family dinner. So, we'd like to apologise to anyone who felt they waited too long, or something wasn't exactly how they wanted it. But hey, we think we made a cracking effort to put some smiles on your dials. But, we'll be back bigger (of course) and better (we can't wait) sometime and somewhere in the future and with even more #authenticdifferent products. Why? I personally put this to you - Do you think South Africa deserves to only hang it's hat on one or two products? On one region or food cuisine that only reflects on that region? Do you believe that is an accurate portrayal of South African food and culture? You must be "mal in the kop" as we say. To all our friends, partners and families who've been there no questions asked, thank you is not enough, not near enough! To ALL staff, colleagues, photographers, DJ's, designers and Tradies, you know who you are, thank you and look forward to seeing you on the other side of this. Where to now? 07.01.2022 2021 is out the blocks and @chris_ockerse has been nothing short of exemplary with O&TE. So, who is this Chris guy you’ve seen of? He on boarded with us as our head barman in the months leading up to our Covid closure last year. Chris is such a fan of our vision that he has now come on board as a partner and the catalyst behind the build of the @karoo.bar project. Originally from Joburg but spent his teens in Germany and England for many years after. His experience has many... years in the hospo game from GM of 3 level restaurants to managing micro breweries and is a level 1 sommelier - the guy knows his drink. Some of you may have even sampled his new items on our drinks menu pre covid! Outside of work he dabbles in all things outdoors, motorbikes (or anything with engine), engineering and building stuff-n-things. In anticipation for the announcement to be made by the government for restaurants, cafes and hospitality venues to shut down all on premise dining and for the health and safety of our small team and other customers. WE'RE MOVING TO DELIVERY AND TAKE AWAY ONLY AS OF 24 MARCH TUESDAY NIGHT UNTIL RESTRICTIONS ARE LIFTED. OPENING HOURS REMAIN THE SAME As a small restaurant it's our livelihood, which we love doing. and that is to bring good food and a homely experience filled with memories of what we grew up on. Unfortunately now we won't be able to give you the convo, the banter and laughter in store. We will be doing all deliveries in house as we have chosen not to use food apps like Uber Eats. WHY? I personally don't want to give them 35% plus more and prefer to utilise our existing team members as it allows them to keep their jobs. They also need an income right? (Imagine giving your 100% effort, and seeing only 60% of the reward, that's if the driver rocks up hey? We may as well temporarily close the doors) Understandable you'll have to pick the phone up, you won't be able to watch Sandeep or Roberto on the map and yes it won't be delivered in 16 or 23 minutes apparently, but rest assured you'll get your meal at the requested ETA. HOW does it work? Just call through your order during the day, request a time, make payment. Easy. ORDERS: $30 min order plus $3 delivery. PICK UP: 10% off your bill for all take away pickups.
