24.01.2022 Talk about anxiety! Technology anxiety! My humble apologies to all of those people who signed up for my free webinar this morning. I don’t know what went wrong but for whatever reason you were unable to join. Don’t fret though. You’ll still receive a recording and I’ll reschedule another live webinar so you can ask your own questions relating to your child.

20.01.2022 Have you ever said Breathing just doesn’t work for my child? If so you may have missed an important component of this valuable skill....Practice! You wouldn’t expect your child to be able to ride a bike after just a few attempts and using calming strategies is no different. That is why they call meditation a ‘practice’. To maintain and develop skills you have to practice and self regulation is no different. ... Try out some breathing strategies and set a timer at random points throughout the day or at times when they are already settled such as lying in bed with you at the end of the day. Using something visual like an oil timer or fit bit with a heart rate monitor may help with attention or set a timer and see how long they can do quiet deep breathing in and out through their nose like a mouse or other small creature. Yes it will seem weird and there will be tricky times but that goes with the territory of learning something new.

19.01.2022 You may have had a difficult childhood but this is not a predictor of what type of parent you will be. Learning this gave me such hope. It is more your ability to make sense of your childhood and this awareness and insight leads you to being open to learn new skills. ... The parenting role itself gives us greater opportunity to grow as individuals and as parents. Dan Siegal and Mary Hartzell's book "Parenting from the Inside out" is a lovely guide to developing this self reflection. Check it out.

16.01.2022 People with autism are not ill or broken. They simply have a unique view of the world. Understanding what’s going on for children with autism is so important for those around them but also for the child themselves. When it comes to talking to your child about their diagnosis this little video might help you start that conversation.

10.01.2022 Learning to breathe should be a part of every Calm Plan. It’s a wonderful way to get back into our bodies and settle those shaky amygdala’s. But it doesn’...t just happen on command. Learning to breathe is like any skill. You have to learn it and you have to practice. For young children use something visual. Pretend you’re small animals like a mouse or a ladybird Or hold your finger up and pretend you’re blowing the flame on a flickering candle. Or hold up you hand and trace a star fish as you breathe Once you have a favourite, add it to your calm plan, make it visual and carry it with you. Set a timer for various times of the day to practice and record how long you can do your breathing practice together. Watching them is wonderful and you feel them (and you) settle and slow down. I feel more relaxed just writing about it. So what’s your favourite? Learning to breathe is a small part of our online programme ‘Emptying the Worry Cup’ where you can learn and create your own Calm Plan together. https://ottimekidstherapy.com.au/p/emptying-your-worry-cup/

10.01.2022 There is a strong relationship between sensory processing difficulties, anxiety and sleep. The memories and experiences of the day are processed when you’re asleep so it stands to reason that a day of distress will not lead to a restful night for many of our littlies. A consistent bedtime routine is the absolute necessity but what else can we do? ... If our memories of the day are processed at night let’s create opportunities for more happy memories during the day. What lights your child up? Make sure you seek out these experiences together and then reflect on those happy feelings. It’s impossible to be anxious and happy at the same time. Maybe this is another part of the puzzle for a better nights sleep!

10.01.2022 Totally OTT therapists! Happy OT week to me and us!

07.01.2022 Do you remember when you learned cursive? There are a lot of skills required and not all kids get the hang of it easily. But does that matter......? What do you think?

05.01.2022 We are seeing more and more children who are worriers. There are many reasons children worry and one of them is sensory overload. We all have a cup of worry. Sometimes we have a little bit of worry and sometimes we have a lot. If you have a child with sensory processing difficulties their worry cup can be close to overflowing most of the time. ... Anxiety in our children is unfortunately increasing and managing our worry is one of our most useful life skills. You are invited to a FREE webinar on Wednesday June 17 at 7pm AEST to learn about the link between anxiety and sensory processing and how you can use this knowledge to develop a Calm Plan for you and your child. 02.01.2022 Thanks to my speechie friend Katy Fletcher for sharing this video on some recent research on reading. As an OT and mother of a child who had reading difficulties it’s a frustrating and slow journey and can really affect your child’s confidence and belief in themselves. But don’t give up. Do whatever it takes to keep the love of learning and books. Be adaptable. There is no one size fits all. ... There are stages to learning anything new and the brain is capable of adapting and developing with the right stimulation. When it comes to reading, I’m in the phonics camp but I’d love to hear about your experiences. What’s working or has worked for you?

02.01.2022 Just hanging with my OT buddy in OT week.

02.01.2022 We all want to create new habits for our kids but what about ourselves? What habits do we want to change? Tracking your habits makes that habit more likely to occur so why not create habits that make a difference to our lives and our kids lives. Time with us is what kids crave most. So let’s make it a habit.

02.01.2022 Times, they are a changing. And we can always be certain of that. When COVID hit I decided to make the transition to Telehealth and a mobile service. ...And so today I say goodbye to my cute little shop in Grey St. It’s been a lovely space to work and play in. Looking forward to seeing you all soon. www.ottimekidstherapy.com.au

01.01.2022 We often forget how hard it is to learn something new. This can be very challenging and even scary for our kids and then we get resistance. Teaching our kids that there are steps to learning new things and that it's normal to be uncomfortable and make lots of mistakes in the early stages makes having a go that little bit easier. And what about you? When was the last time you tried something new and failed and then modelled moving through those stages to mastery?... We can talk about our own challenges in this way and let them know this is normal. As an OT I get to coach kids through their self care, play and school goals everyday. It’s so fantastic to see them achieve things they really want to do. Thanks to Donna Star Avenue Dance Centre who coached Portia and who also coaches kids through these stages every day.
