22.01.2022 Launching Great Ocean Road Health logo

20.01.2022 The challenge of providing health care to a vast and isolated tourist location is as complex today as it was in 1952 when the Apollo Bay Hospital was established to provide acute and emergency care to Apollo Bay and surrounding townships. With travel distances of up to 75kms on treacherous roads to reach the closest major town, services provided by Otway Health are a necessity. In 1976 the Apollo Bay Hospital established Community Services including Community Nursing and Home... and Community Care (HACC) under federal government initiatives. Both of these services are still running today and provide a life line for many members of the community. HACC programs (now Community Home Support Program or CHSP) help keep the elderly fit and mobile in their own homes, living amongst their friends and families. With a vision to the future, Otway Health opened the Laura Pengilley Aged Care Wing of the hospital in 1991, the result of community and government consultation and support. Residential aged care is provided in accordance with Montessori principles to maximise ongoing independence and optimise resident choices. With 25 flexible beds used for residential aged care to provide much needed respite, as well as an extensive health and activities program, it is a regularly accessed community asset. Otway Health remains a vital structure in the lives of Apollo Bay and Otway residents. Staff and board look forward to completing a transition to a more sustainable model to ensure our healthcare service can grow to meet our changing needs and continue to be a vital local service 70 years from now. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the community, residents, families, friends, along with current and past staff, executive and board members. To acknowledge the value that Otway Health adds to our community, we invite you to join us in celebrating our history and our future as we move towards our new collaboration at a Board of Governance Special General Meeting Celebration & Recognition Ceremony. Monday 24 June 2pm-3pm, Laura Pengilley Wing, Otway Health

19.01.2022 10-16 June is Men’s Health Week All this emphasis on the health of boys and men - what's that about? They're alright, aren't they? In many cases, the answer is no.... A boy born in Australia in 2010 has a life expectancy of 78.0 years while a baby girl born at the same time could expect to live to 82.3 years old. Right from the start, boys suffer more illness, more accidents and die earlier than their female counterparts. Men take their own lives at four times the rate of women (that's five men a day, on average). Accidents, cancer and heart disease all account for the majority of male deaths. Make time to check in with your GP to get a check up

18.01.2022 Bowel Awareness Month June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, a Bowel Cancer Australia initiative to raise awareness of Australia's second deadliest cancer. Bowel cancer claims the lives of 103 Australians every week (5,375 people a year) - but it's one of the most treatable types of cancer if found early. Bowel Cancer Australia recommends participating in screening appropriate to your personal level of risk. For people at average risk of bowel cancer, medical guidelines recommend screening using a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) every 2 years from age 50. However, if you have one relative diagnosed with bowel cancer at age 55 years or older, screening should be considered every 2 years from age 45.

17.01.2022 Great Ocean Road Health acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the Gadubanud country and throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

15.01.2022 Second Sails needs an outdoor blind! Second Sails have applied to Bendigo Bank for funding to install an outside blind to protect sale items during poor weather. Second Sails is an important part of Apollo Bay and surrounding area by providing affordable goods to the local community that are otherwise unavailable in the region. Second Sails help to fund essential health services to the local and surrounding communities as all funds raised by Second Sails are donated to Otway ...Health. Refurbishing the shop will increase sales and thus increase the donation back to Otway Health which is a benefit to the whole Community of Apollo Bay and surrounds.
