20.01.2022 With home isolation and gardens becoming more important as a relaxation area perhaps its time to consider bamboo as a garden feature. Hidden away in the Otways our bamboos have been happily growing away in isolation. Most have reached heights between 1.5 and 3 metres and are ready to go into bigger pots or the ground. Now is a good time to plant as they will have autumn/winter to settle in then spring to really establish in a garden. Prices vary from $40 - $90 depending on size and species. We can deliver within a reasonable distance and can organise a visit to view our plants on site with minimal interaction.
19.01.2022 Asper Bamboo (Dendrocalamus Asper) This is the main edible shoot species in SE Asia and is also grown for construction timber. We have about 20 plants that have really taken off and while not suggesting they will grow to the extent that they do in Asia they could well form a nice feature or screen...but be warned they can grow tall in ideal conditions. We have another 10 in the ground and they have taken a while to get going in pretty tough and dry conditions but are now cracking 1 to 1.5 meters tall. They can produce quite big and spectacular culms ( see an example below) and for this reason would make a nice garden feature to take in with the morning coffee or evening aperitif! 200mm pot $35
18.01.2022 The rising sun behind all that smoke seems to be recalling the era when this country was truly loved and respected. :(
18.01.2022 Otway Bamboo. Locally propagated clumping bamboo. Gracilis bambusa. A tough go anywhere, clean landscape, screen bamboo with an upright growth habit. Will grow against a fence and not take up a lot of air space giving you privacy without taking up a lot of room. Have 8 X 250 mm pots that are pushing 2 m already and can achieve up to 6 m in 2 years with decent care. $75 each Also have 2 unique stand alone ornamental plants Dendrocalamus minor (Ghost Bamboo). These form a tight clump below with a large canopy and can make a great tree and shade replacement as they can grow up to 8 m. 200 mm, $70 and 300mm $90. Lots of other varieties also available.
17.01.2022 Otway Bamboo Xmas Sale now on........unique gifts or spoil yourself with a little bamboo magic for your house or garden
17.01.2022 Dendrocalamus Asper 200mm pots 1.5-1.8m tall. $40 - 50 each A magnificent looking bamboo with enormous straight culms which are covered in velvet-like hair. Grown commercially in Indonesia for timber and edible shoots its final size in our region will be substantially smaller but still impressive. As a clumping bamboo its footprint will be in a tight tidy clump. A favourite for look with cream/ blonde velvety finish on mid green poles and large dark green fo...liage. If you have the space, then it makes a stunning feature plant with large green leaves that flutter and mesmerise in the breeze. A very attractive statement plant that will bring you a lot of pleasure and provide a safe haven for many smaller native birds. Minimum temperature tolerance: - 5C Climate: Will grow well in coastal climates and can tolerate mild frosts Light conditions: Full sun Growth habit: Upright, slightly weeping tops Growing conditions: Moist, well-drained soil. Keep well mulched. Bamboo will tolerate all soil types but may take longer to establish in very heavy clay. When planting bamboo do not disturb the root ball and do not plant deeper than it is potted. Treat new bamboo as you would any other new plant until established. Once it is established it will be extremely water wise and almost totally self-sufficient.
16.01.2022 PEACE! QUIET! PRIVACY! Bamboo Screening Solutions Want to block out the single storey neighbours windows on the side of the house which gets filtered or limited sun?... Himalayan Weeping and Nepalese Blue are both fine leaf ornamental bamboos that have a narrow footprint but a weeping habit that can be used to form a light screen up to 2-2.5 metre high. Both species look great in pots but in the ground their shallow non-invasive root systems will form clumps and a great screen if planted 1 metre apart (need a 5 metre screen then 5 plants) All 200mm pots are $30. All specimens in this range are 1-1.5 metres tall. We have larger specimens in 300+mm pots as well. Prices vary.
13.01.2022 Otway bamboo is starting to move...we have hundreds of screening bamboo on the go ranging from 3m, 6m up to 15m +! Find us down the Monday markets at Lorne to see what odds and ends we are selling off for bargain prices!

10.01.2022 Otway Bamboo is a small boutique nursery situated in the Lorne hinterland specialising in clumping bamboo hardened to Southern Victoria. Clumping bamboo does not run and is non invasive. A warm summer and very good late autumn rains have our bamboo moving with plenty of new culms and shoots. Now is an ideal time to plant, in ground or pot up, and establish them for the winter months and next summers growing period. We have been planting and experimenting to find out which s...pecies can handle our Otway conditions so these plants will do well with some care. Check out the pictures of our small plantation to see the sizes that some of these species can attain. We have plenty of Himalayan Weeping, Nepalese Blue, Chinese Dwarf, Gracilis and a small number of magnificent Ghost Bamboos for sale. Prices vary from $25 - $90 depending on species and plant size. Message or call 0418249880 for more information or make a time to call in and see first hand what Bamboo can do to enhance the look and feel of your property. See more
07.01.2022 One of the locals enjoying the wonderful serenity of bamboo....plenty in stock to bring the same ambience to your garden
07.01.2022 Here is some proof of the speed at which Gracilis ( Slender Weaver ) will grow into a decent screen. Picture 1 from March 2016 ( plants 30cm high) and Picture 2 from March 2018 ( plants 2-3 metres and pushing up lots of culms)...and that is through an extremely dry summer with only strategic watering.
07.01.2022 Hi all. Otway Bamboo will be back at the Monday ( 25th Feb) Night Market in Lorne this week and hope to see plenty of people out and about supporting this great community initiative. We will have our usual selection of smaller clumping bamboos and plenty of information about the ones that are too big for us to fit in the ute and bring along. See some examples in our picture spread below. Our greenhouse is bursting and we need to make space for our new propagations. Time to get a great price on a Bamboo for your garden, patio, deck or pergola.
06.01.2022 Spice up your garden or entertainment area with some ornamental bamboo. We currently have a greenhouse full of many varieties that can give your garden an interesting lift for that tropical summer feel. At the moment we have mature 1.5 - 2.5 m Nepalese Blue and Himalayan Weeping varieties in 200mm pots for a special Xmas price of $50. Both species like a shady area or filtered light in the garden or will happily thrive under a veranda or pergola. Bamboo is a very unique but often misunderstood plant. Many people still think that all bamboo is invasive, but there are two very distinct types; Running and Clumping Bamboo. Clumping Bamboo cannot physically run and will stay put in the clump where you plant the original bamboo, not like a running bamboo that spreads everywhere. We only propagate and sell CLUMPING, NON-INVASIVE BAMBOO!
05.01.2022 We have finally emerged from weeks of easterly mist at Otway Bamboo. Not so good for tourists but great weather for our clumping bamboo stocks.
04.01.2022 Monkey Bamboo (Ampelacalamus Scandens) This is an unusual bamboo with a climbing and *pendulant growing pattern. It is cold hardy and looks great in a pot or in the ground. We have had a few specimens in the ground for 3 years and they make an eye-catching addition to a garden. It also trims up well as a small hedge. Get in quick to be the first people in your street with a "Monkey in the Garden" 200mm pot $40... **(from the classical Latin" pendulus" meaning hanging down)
04.01.2022 Years ago as I was learning and developing bamboo stock for Victoria I was fortunate enough to be a part of a Bamboo timber treatment workshop involving the Bamboo society of Australia regarding standardisng the treatment of bamboo timber. Here is the article from the bamboo bulletin. See on the last page me turning bamboo handles on a bow lathe for bamboo furniture carving knives- something I hope to offer in the near future for anybody interested in bamboo crafts. We have timber species available if you wanted to get some in. Ow for the future!

02.01.2022 Bambusa textilis var. Gracilis (Slender Weavers Bamboo) Locally propagated from mother plants growing in the foothills of Lorne. Even the locals are coming for a look!! This beautiful tidy upright bamboo is great for privacy screens or as feature plant. Its general hardiness and lush green foliage make it a wonderful garden addition that requires little attention after establishment if kept well mulched. Will grow up to 5 metres high but its footprint will be small and clum...ped. Cold tolerant and happy in either full sun or part shade. We have plenty of 200 mm pots with 3 - 6 culms ranging in height from 1.5 - 1.8 metres. $40 See more
02.01.2022 Its been a busy time over spring with transplanting, propagation and general nursery business after a rather cold winter. Now its summer and the bamboo have woken up and are looking great. We have Himalayan Weeping, Nepalese Blue, Himalayan Asper, Chinese Goddess, Monkey Bamboo and Gold Stripe available in a variety of pot sizes and prices from $30 to $100+. Many are getting so tall I worry they will lift the roof off the greenhouse. All bamboos are of the clumping variety and WILL not run from original planting location. All look great in pots and will compliment any garden style or outside entertainment area. Its a good time to get them established for the upcoming holiday season.

01.01.2022 Hi allWe love our Bamboo at Otway Bamboo and often hear a lot of misinformation about bamboo that emanates from past practices and poor species selection. We only grow and sell clumping bamboo NOT the running type that people believe is what all bamboo does. So whats the difference between Running and Clumping Bamboo?? Well its the Rhizome type that makes them different. ( see the diagram )... All bamboos spread via rhizomes. But whereas running bamboos (monopodial) have long rhizomes that are quick to spread horizontally escaping into garden beds and the neighbours backyard...yikes! , clumping bamboos (sympodial) have shorter rhizomes that stay close to their point of origin and do not spread much if at all. Clumping bamboos make a great garden statement without risk of escape, forming a dense grove or screen within 4 to 5 years. At Otway Bamboo, we have substantial outside plantings that have lived and thrived through long hot summers, extended cold and wet periods and at times been under extreme wind load as we are exposed to the north and west Bamboo can take a variety of soil conditions. Dig a hole at least twice as big as the pot and fill below and around the roots with fresh potting soil. If you have clay soils you should amend to increase drainage and nutrient uptake. Add sandy soil to promote better drainage. Add fertilizer around the roots when planting. Fertilize early spring through summer with a high nitrogen-based fertiliser. Bamboo love mulch so pile up leaves, compost, and manure around the base to provide nutrients and protect the shallow root mat Water thoroughly through the first summer, and thereafter. Water and sun requirements vary by species but some vigilance by owners should avert any disasters. Generally, bamboo plants will go through a short period of transplant shock and will lose leaves and look scrappy. DONT PANIC! With good care, they should re-grow leaves in a few weeks time and be fully leafed out in 6-8 weeks. After planting, we recommend watering at least once per week during spring/summer. However, please understand that your conditions will vary. More sun = more watering High winds = more watering In spring, if your plants are showing winter stress (such as a lot of yellow leaves) then use a liquid seaweed fertilizer in addition to your regular fertilizing. Then sit back and enjoy the summer growing season when the bamboo will put up impressive culms We have a variety of species for sale that will suit most conditions. Feel free to get in touch and discover the bamboo options for your garden, patio, deck or pergola See the images attached
