24.01.2022 Happy birthday Chef David!

21.01.2022 Both Kathleen (left) and Rhina (right) were looking for work and were referred to the Work and Learning Centre by their Job Actives in May/June 2020. After mee...ting with Rebecca, one of our Advisors who set some employment and training goals for both ladies, they enrolled into the 'Introduction to the Internet' and the 'Online Learning Support' classes. They met in class and a supportive friendship blossomed. Together they have encouraged each other and have both enrolled in Term 3 courses: Basic Computers, Become a Barista and Cooking Up Jobs. They are having such a great time and learning so much. Throughout this time, Kathleen has also successfully gained employment with a local cleaning company and Rhina is progressing through an interview process as we speak. Well done Ladies! We are super proud of you both. :)

21.01.2022 Meet Kittipak Smith She’s one of the 102 Victorians employed through the Brotherhood of St. Laurence as part of the Victorian Government’s Working for Victoria... initiative Kitti juggled many jobs over her lifetime. In between having three children, she has worked as a kindergarten teacher and undertaken housekeeping and secretarial duties in Thailand’s Chang Mai. Six years ago, she migrated to Australia on a spouse visa with her children. Kitti worked in Ararat as a cleaner, but when her relationship broke up, she lost access to her husband’s car to get there from Ballarat and couldn’t continue her role. She visited the Ballarat Jobs Victoria Work and Learning Centre (WLC) to look for work and start an English course. When COVID-19 hit, the resort she worked at lost tourism bookings and Kitti lost all her shifts. She took up English lessons and a cooking course at the WLC, which increased her English skills. She was then encouraged to enrol in an Asset Maintenance course, as well as register for a job through the Victorian’s Government’s Working for Victoria initiative which aims to get unemployed Victorians hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic back into work, while delivering valuable community services. When the WLC had a role, Kitti applied and was thrilled to be successful. She's now a Health and Safety Officer on a six-month contract. I was so happy, I get to help the centre keep its facilities clean, which is even more important during this coronavirus time. I’ve made some new friends as I don’t have too many friends in Ballarat given I haven’t been here long, Kitti said. My bills were getting bigger. The job is now helping me pay the rent, pay bills and look after my family. It’s also great for my resume to have more referees. The Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) is part of the Working for Victoria program and, through it, has been able to expand its workforce to help meet the surging demand for services. BSL is pleased to support the initiative, providing job opportunities to people like Kitti at the Ballarat Work and Learning Centre - a joint BSL and @BallaratNC partnership.
