25.01.2022 As General Practitioners, we want to promote judicious and safe use of all prescription medication and investigations! This coming week is National Prescribing Service MEDICINE WISE Week ! If you are unsure of why you are taking medications, or unsure when you should be taking some of the tablets you have on prescription, its important to ask your doctor or friendly pharmacist to be able to help you understand when and how to take your medications so that they work the best ...that they can! If you are taking over the counter supplements or supplements from alternative health practitioners, it is important to make sure that your General Practitioners and specialists know this as they can interact with prescription medications. Things to think about and ask your doctor and sometimes pharmacist when we suggest new medications are: 1. Why have you prescribed this medication for me? 2. When do i need to take this medication? 3. Is this a medication that I will just take for a little while, or is this medication that I will take for a long time? 4. What are the side effects of this medication? 5. What are the problems that I could have if I dont take the tablets? These are all questions that your GP will be happy to answer for you! https://www.nps.org.au//clinical/news/be-medicinewise-week

22.01.2022 It is National Diabetes Week from 9-15 July and Diabetes Australias "Its About Time" campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and early treatment for all types of diabetes. Too many Australians are being diagnosed with diabetes too late. The is true for both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/it-s-about-time-type-2

20.01.2022 North Queenslanders spend a lot of time in the sun, unfortunately it also means we have some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world! Just a friendly reminder to Slip, Slop, Slap, Slide and seek shade where possible and look after your skin as much as possible as we come into the hottest months and high UV exposure of the year! We do need about 15-30 minutes of sun a day for bone health but this is just our forearms and early in the day or late afternoon to limit U...V exposure ! If you have had skin spots that you are concerned about then we encourage all people to skin checks with your friendly GP's!

18.01.2022 Brittle bones or Osteoperosis places people at risk of breaking bones more easily such as your hip with a fall! Anyone over the age of 70 is able to have a Bone Mineral Density scan to test their bone density and see if we need to be helping to prevent further bone loss. Other people may require Bone Density scanning earlier from Age 50 if there are particular risk factors such as prolonged oral steroids use, chronic kidney disease, Thyroid problems and parathyroid problem...s or early menopause. Measure Up are a mobile service doing bone scans. They are visiting from the 11-13th of November at Outback. If you are unsure if you are not up to date to with scans or think that you may need a scan, then you will need to discuss it with your friendly GP !

18.01.2022 Its World Premature Birth Day to highlight that sometimes little bubs decide to come along a bit early! 1 in 10 babies come early, some earlier than others and we are lucky in North Queensland to have a wonderful Level 6 NICU in Townsville that supports the Ayr Hospital if we have some unexpected arrivals! Its important if babies are premature that we keep up to date with vaccinations and make sure that they continue to reach milestones as they develop at the appropriate times or get help early if things are taking a bit longer!
